View Full Version : What's the most boring big American city?

Dallas comes to mind but I haven't been there. What could you do for fun there? No beaches, mountains, tourist attractions or great history, and I'm pretty sure the sprawl is terrible there. What are the entertainment options? Nightlife is supposed to be decent there I suppose? And I'm not just saying this to troll the Dallas ISHers, it just seems like a really boring place to live/visit, especially for the fourth largest metro center in the US.

googled a boring city list and Dallas came out on top http://www.ranker.com/list/the-most-boring-cities-i_ve-been-to/mollie

As for most boring city that I've been to? Probably Buffalo though it's useful to me because of the outlet stores. Drove through Jacksonville before, looked for something to maybe do there but good lord was the city boring.

San Antonio has some solid tourist attractions for the family. Kind of interested in going there one day.

Houston looks boring as hell too. Texas seems to have this locked up.

No and no. Both cities are great and have plenty to do. A lot of people vacation in both places too, so I don't see how they can be boring.

How are you gonna make a judgement on how boring a city is without ever having been there?

The most boring cities I have ever actually been to have been el paso, san antonio, oklahoma city, and kansas city

Isn't San Antonio's River Walk supposed by really cool? I've never been.

I'd vote for Jacksonville based on the places I've been, and it was so lame I'd probably count it just in theory against any major city. That Florida coastline isn't even any good. Tampa is about 1000 times better.

A sleeper that I didn't like, San Diego. And I spent a lot of time there. It's just too moderate all the time. Too laid back an atmosphere for me. The weather never changes, which I know some people say it's perfect all the time, but I hated the lack of change. The work scene was pretty lousey too. Many people work in service, taking the tip you give them to give it back to you in your service job the next night. And there's a huge influx of young military due to it's air force base, which more often than not means overly riled drunk guys who can't handle there liquor or there egos. I don't know, there just wasn't enough going on for me. But I'm not a beach guy either, so that doesn't help. Can't be too hard on it though because the quality of woman is top shelf.

And a sleeper that I really like. Pittsburgh. Excellent food. The steel worker history lends to a great variety of hard drinking type places that are right up my ally. Very blue collar and down to earth. A committed and smart sports fanbase. And I've had luck with women there too.

Cleveland is a great city too.

I had a BLAST in Dallas.

Columbus, OH is very boring if you don't go to the University (in some capacity its bigger than Cleveland).

Salt Lake City is boring if you don't like outdoor activities and winter sports.

I did everything I wanted to really besides smash a ***** from Dallas.

*See a car with horns on it? Check.
*Get ****ed up with the homies and feel on some booty in the club? Yessir.
*Go to the strip club and get my boy lap dances at the club for his twenty first birthday? Yup.

C'Mon man when you go to the strip club they have big ass rubbermaid bins full of ice and you can bring your own liquor.

Mark me down as enjoying what little time I've spent in Dallas. It's actually quite a metropolitan city. Probably not in my top 10 of US cities but definitely no where near the bottom 10 of places I've visited. I've been to almost every major US city too. Like Thorpe mentioned Jacksonville is a total shit hole, same goes for virtually every place in Florida (south Florida is cool)...Orlando and Tampa suck.

As far as the most boring cities are concerned I would never want to spend more than 5 consecutive days in Vegas. Dry heat and casinos gets old very quickly. It's pretty seedy too.

I'm going to severely disagree with you. Portland sucks while Vegas is fun. Vegas >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Portland. Granted, I've been to Vegas 3 times, but only been to Portland once. I was in Vegas last month and the weather was actually kind of cool, but that weather was still far superior to the weather when I was in Portland (and that was during the summer).

How about Detroit? I've never heard anything interesting told about it. Sometimes, it sounds like the auto industries are its most interesting feature.

At least when it comes to NBA cities, the most boring ones are generally considered to be:

Detroit
Cleveland
Phoenix
San Antonio
Salt Lake City

I used to think Sacramento was nothing special, either, but sometimes it seems more interesting than it firstly sounded. Anyone from there?

I have been to many cities in the US...once drove all the way to Wisconsin with a freind and we stopped at every city inbetween...

IMO you can't really get a grasp of a place just by spending a few days somewhere...I hate in when posters in here think that since they have been to a certain place it makes them sudden experts on the place and their people...

last year I flew to Chicago and spent a few nights there...I don't think I am an expert on Chicago and the people there because of it...

ANYWAY, how about THESE:

-Oklahoma City
-Kansas City
-Memphis

Calling a city you have never been to boring? :oldlol:

Dallas has quite a bit to do actually.

As many have said the night life is great. There is pretty much every single scene you could want. We have several large lakes and hundreds of parks, including a large state park all around the area. We have teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, Texas Motor Speedway, Lone Star Race track for horse racing and gambling, AFL, NBDL, several major colleges and minor league baseball. The music scene is excellent with all genres represented. The Texas State Fair is a major attraction in the fall. There is a Six Flags and a Hurricane Harbor. There are ice rinks for skating. For the arts there are several museums, a symphony hall, an opera house, and pocket arts districts that do anything from music to sculpture to painting. There are zoos and aquariums if thats your thing. There are several large malls that are very nice such as the Galleria or North Park as well as other great shopping spots. The stockyard in Ft Worth is another interesting place to check out and isn't all that far from downtown Dallas.

The sprawl is really no worse than any other major metro area and we have a growing light rail system that can take you most areas you would most likely travel to.

Yes Dallas is more of a business town than a tourist destination but to say its a boring place is just flat out ignorant. Plus, if you really just have to go snow skiing or to the ocean, we have two major airports half an hour from downtown that can get you anywhere in the country in 1 to 5 hours.

Portland is the shit! Great skiing is 2 hours away in one direction, pacific ocean 2 hours away in the other, tons of great outdoors in the middle, trailblazers have sold out like 100+ straight games, tons of awesome restaurants and countless breweries/brewpubs...

Most boring city I have been to is probably Oklahoma City. Aside from "bricktown" or whatever it was called, that place just sucked. This was about a decade ago, so maybe things got better. At least OU is only like 30 minutes away, Norman is pretty cool.

I live here in Boston and I tend to find it boring here. I go to NYC a couple times a year and coming back on the way home, I am just astonished at how boring it is compared to the Big Apple.

I know Boston has that whole "historic" stuff but jeez, man, when little, tiny crammed 2 bedroom apartments on Beacon St., Comm. Ave, Newbury, Boylston go for 2k a month, it just ain't worth it. Big deal, Paul Revere galloped through around my city warning the Patriots, gimme Crumbs Bakery all day everyday over "Paul Revere's House tour".

SAn Antonio is boring if you dont know what you want to do. Or if youre one of those people that waits around for something to happen. Most cities are. Its a huge military town with like 3 bases. Everyone that gets stationed there ends up retiring there. The night life doesnt exist downtown like an Austin. Which by the way has the best night life ive ever experienced other than Vegas. If you want to have a good time in San Antonio you need to do some research.

And who de feck said there isnt any girls?:oldlol:

But by the way Austin is only an hour drive north. I would recommend going there if you havent been.

I live in Columbus (right off OSU campus), and for the life of me I can't fathom why anyone would want to visit or vacation here. There's nothing here. The weather sucks. No interesting history to speak of.

If you're a college student looking to party, coming to Ohio State wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Other than that, though, Columbus really has nothing to offer.

Compared to NYC, any place will come up short. But I agree that Boston charges big city prices and doesn't deliver.

My main complaint is that our summers are too short.

Especially like two years ago when it rained all the way through August. Heck are winters are just as bad. Snow in April?? I can't wait til it hits 60.....although make no mistake about it. I'm cold-weather guy. Always have been, always will be.

that place is more of a monster than the TV could ever show...it is just enormous...I am telling you it looks like the Death Star from Star Wars walking up to it...

I went to that fight, and yes I just watched the screen for the most part...but it isn't as ridiculous as it sounds...you are still there in the atmosphere...but that has been a complaint about that screen, that it is so big no one watches the actual athletes...

I grew up, and still live, in between Boston and NY. Much closer to NY actually. About an hour away. A little over two to Boston.

I often feel like no city will ever live up to my expectations. It's awesome just how big NY is. And because that's the first city I ever went to, I always expect every place to be like that, and almost none are. Even Chicago, which I absolutely love, isn't big like NY is big. From a distance, you can see the Chicago downtown, while NY just feels like you're constantly immersed. LA is big but it sprawls. One of the things about NY is that you come into Grand Central off the train, climb up from underground, and walk outside and it's imposing. It's not like that everywhere, but it is more than anyplace I've been too.

I've never been to the pacific northwest, but I've always wanted too. It looks gorgeous to me. But I have been to SF, which is similar, and it's probably my third favorite city I've been to in the country.

I know my opinion on San Diego is not the norm, but it's just got a weird vibe to it. It's like an entire city of real world cast members. It's not fun enough to be as socially non-descript as it is. The horse track is fun though.

LA is overrated. pos. i went there this weekend, first off the freeways/roads are COMPLETE SH!t. FIX YOUR FCKING ROADS. SECOND, HEY MOTHERFCKERS, GOOD JOB ON HAVING BMW'S, BENZ, PORCHES, BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN YOU SHOULD DRIVE FCKING INSANE AT 100 MPH. THIRD, EVERYONE IS A STUCK UP, ARROGANT JERK. FOURTH, THE CITY IS TOO DAMN BIG. FIFTH, I GOT LOST SEVERAL TIMES. got damn were there some fine btches though.

I went to NYC for the first time ever last Summer. I was blown away by the VASTNESS of the city as I saw it appear on the horizon. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. We parked our car in Jersey City, took the subway over, and I will never forget what it was like walking out into the city for the first time. Completely blew my mind away. It erased any prior images I had of what a "big city" was like.

i do agree about NYC. i remember when i first went to NYC. hopped on the subway from JFK airport to the city. the big buildings and mass people just hit you in the face when you go up the stairs from the undergound. :lol

that being said, that euphoric feeling doesn't happen as much anymore whenever i go to nyc.

In the metro area you have....
-Lake Allatoona and Lanier
-Stone Mountain/Kennesaw Moutain
-Parks everywhere
-Six Flags
-Great nightlife
-World's largest aquarium
-Sports teams in the four major NA leagues
-Concerts
-Shopping of all kinds, malls in every metro reigion with easy acess to highways...except for Lennox Mall and Phipps Plaza lol
-World of coca cola
-Marietta Square(there is a gone with the wind museum there too, good stuff)
-sure there is more, im just tired lol.

Agreed on all counts. NYC (Manhattan specifically) creates what I call the "ant effect". Try walking down one of their main thoroughfares (Avenue of the Americas perhaps) and see if it doesn't make you feel insignifigant. Just a physically huge city.

I love SF. Only been once, but it had an incredibly cool vibe. Quite frankly, it reminded me of Boston. Its Boston with a west coast vibe.

I also went to San Diego once. Very strange, surreal vibe there, kind of like a David Lynch movie. Almost too relaxed. But I liked it.

I personally couldn't stand to live in a city like NY, because I just feel trapped. No where is outside, everywhere you go you feel like you're part of some sort of human construction and nothing feels natural, and I just hate that. My front yard feels more natural then anything in NY.
its just concrete and people. I wanna check it out.

SF is the greatest city in the States at least for a young person. It is quite expensive to live in the city but like anything else you pay for what you get. SF is the city of love, it is flowing with culture, it is laid back yet almost everyone out here is highly educated and very successful yet unpretentious (for the most part). I've traveled all over the US and I can truly say there is no other place I'd rather be. Being a young person in SF is a very special thing.

I see you're the exception then. It must be very awkward for you. Do they all come from old money too? Are their fathers also famous artists who travel the world painting murals and making love to fine women, or are their imaginations not quite as wild as yours?

I have been to many cities in the US...once drove all the way to Wisconsin with a freind and we stopped at every city inbetween...

IMO you can't really get a grasp of a place just by spending a few days somewhere...I hate in when posters in here think that since they have been to a certain place it makes them sudden experts on the place and their people...

last year I flew to Chicago and spent a few nights there...I don't think I am an expert on Chicago and the people there because of it...

ANYWAY, how about THESE:

-Oklahoma City
-Kansas City
-Memphis
-Louisville
-Indianapolis
-Wichita
-St. Louis
-Nashville
-Birmingham
-Atlanta
-Charlotte
-Lincoln
-Minneapolis

there are a lot of cities in the US without any major attractions...

In terms of what the press and media figures that follow professional sports (who literally travel the country and go to every major city).... it is pretty widely accepted that Minneapolis is an underrated city that doesn't get its deserved props because of the cold winters.

Night life, burgeoning food scene, professional and amateur sports, museums, and countless outdoor attractions and activities.
