there is no such thing as CLUTCH.... there is only a bad/average/good/pure shooter.........
the only reason somebody like lebron or kobe or wade and so on have more clutch shots is because they are the best players for their teams...........
when u are in the NBA... there is no such thing as not being CLUTCH.... but there is "being the best player and therefore gets the ball on his hands in the clutch"....
when somebody misses a 3PT shot in the clutch.... its the result of being a not so good 3PT shooter (or taking a bad / tough shot).....
when somebody misses a FT shot in the clutch... its the result of being a not so good FT shooter............
it has NOTHING to do with the player "BEING AFRAID"...... :facepalm
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS RAISING YOUR LEVEL IN THE CLUTCH............ LOOK AT KOBE AND LEBRON........... LOOK AT THEIR FG% IN THE CLUTCH..... THEY ACTUALLY SHOOT LESS THAN 40% FG THERE............ I WOULDNT CALL THAT "RAISING"..............
YES U BECOME MORE AWARE AND MORE FOCUSED IN THE CLUTCH............ BUT THAT WONT MAKE YOU ALL OF THE SUDDEN SHOOT 100% ACCURACY IN THE CLUTCH..............

Some people are great shooters, just aren't 'cold' enough to make their freethrows when they matter most. On the other hand, there are people who are not the best shooters, but always seem to make them when the game is on the line. So yes, some players are more 'clutch' then others.

Dell Curry was one of the great shooters in the history of the game. Look up his shootings %s.
But he just never seemed to sink any of them in clutch regular season or playoff scenarios.
If Nick Anderson sinks those freethrows, perhaps the Magic win a ring in the penny/shaq era...instead he MISSES them both...they get swept, and he is never the same player again.
Peja is one of the great shooters...ada yada... he AIRBALLS a wide OPEN...corner three pointer against the Lakers in that epic series with the Kings..
I think in practice Peja can make that shot 75 times out of hundred, but in clutch situation he AIRBALLS it

Magic Johnson "I knew who to give the ball to in big situations..I knew who DIDN'T want the ball and I knew who wanted to take those kinds of shots"
Larry Bird "with the score tied and seconds left..most players in the league will take the shot. But down a few points, lot of guys are looking away. Only a handful of guys who will take the shot. It's what separates the men from the boys"
seriously some of u just need to accept this...... stop acting like this is some kindof VIDEO GAME where a player goes always NUTS in the clutch..................... you simply miss a shot or you make it.... ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT.......... its more realistic!!
i understand if some human gets nervous and has a mental breakdown when then game is on the line and everything and u have to take the shot.... it can take a toll on the shot..... BUT THIS IS THE NBA........ if u aint mental tough u dont belong here...............
the only difference between somebody like KOBE or LEBRON and lets say JAMES JONES...... is that Kobe/Lebron are better players and can create plays much better......... BUT I CAN GUARANTEE YOU.......... that if James Jones & Kobe Bryant have to take 10 shots each.... James Jones will make more!!
its not because he is more clutch!! its because he SIMPLY SHOOTS BETTER............. THIS IS THE NBA, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE MENTALLY TO THEM TAKING A SHOT IN THE 1ST QUARTER OR IN THE 4TH QUARTER
LEBRON & KOBE & WADE GET THE BALL IN THEIR HANDS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST AT CREATING PLAYS FOR THEMSELVES OR FOR OTHERS!

now you are overreacting.......... thats completely different......... its not like that at all.............. in the NBA that would make sense only if there ALSO is somebody pointing a 12 gauge shotgun to your head.......

To understand clutch, you have to actually play the game. You're an idiot.
High pressure 10 seconds left, game tied
AS OPPOSED TO
Game tied in the 1st quarter.
There is such a different atmosphere on the court between these two situations. One of them requires you to be clutch in order to succeed.

I agree with a lot of that.
Being "clutch" isn't a skill. If it was, we'd see overall bad or average players that suddenly play incredibly well in "clutch" situations. Other than a few moments here and there, this has never happened consistently in the NBA.
Players are "clutch" because they are damn good in the first place. Not the other way around.

Like who? Let's some #'s on how some of these players have performed in these situations in the long run. I don't think it'll be much of a shock when it's mostly the best players/shooters in the league. I can understand a post player who can't shoot FTs like Dwight Howard not being there.
To me, these guys aren't clutch. They don't have some mystical ability that allows to play better in the final minutes as opposed to the rest of the game. They are just really good overall offensive players to begin with. I would expect a player like Kobe to be more "clutch" than Lebron because he has a better jump shot (an actual skill).
I'd rather attribute differences in performances here to actual things like skill-set, quality of teammates, quality of opposing defense, fatigue, etc. Not simply because someone is a born loser/choker or things along those lines. Was it really a shock when Kobe wasn't considered clutch the post-Shaq pre-Gasol years? He had to carry some crap teammates through entire games and was noticeably tired by the end of them. So why is he considered clutch again now?

I agree. But these guys are all professional superstar athletes. I don't think any of them would be there if they were weak-minded. Since none of us really know what's going on inside their heads, I'd rather look at tangible reasons why some players do well and some don't as an explanation.

Those guys are less nervous towards the end of close games, they might even relish those moments. Therefore it gives them a mental edge over the other players on the floor. It won't mean they'll hit the shot every time because you have to be damn special to be able to do that, but it gives them a significant advantage. Because your mind can fck up all the skills you have.

"If I hit it we win, if I miss y'all (the media) are going to blame the stars for losing the game anyway" - Robert Horry.
Perhaps that's why some guys don't get nervous in those situations. Robert Horry and Fisher aren't stars. They don't have legacies and no one is going to remember or give a shit when they miss a big shot.

I agree with the first part as I believe it's not about someone raising their game in pressured situations. It's about everyone else dropping their game and these certain "clutch" players try to take advantage of it. Everyone gets the goosebumps and the rush of a pounding heart, but the clutch players don't make these things a distraction.

The person who started this thread thinks he knows it all, but still has much to learn upon. Sure, clutch can be overused or misconstrued. But there is such a thing as clutch. Jarret Jack was clutch last year for the Warriors. Clutch has a lot to do with mental. Players with fear will not focus as much, but other players can focus better during critical times. Lebron improved his clutch abilities later on but didn't have it much earlier in his career. And clutch is not the same thing as luck either. Also having a good basketball IQ can help you be a better clutch player in certain situations.

That's true but I also believe sometimes players can raise their game in pressured situations or even raise their intensity. Clutch is not tangible but it's something we all experience. Because it's not easily explained, some try to deny it.

Sure. I just don't think it's a big factor when it comes to the best athletes at the top level of the sport.

When players are under a lot of pressure, some rise to the ocassion, some dont. The players that do are called clutch. Simple as that. Is stupid to think that the pressure doesnt have any effect in the players.

Sure. I just don't think it's a big factor when it comes to the best athletes at the top level of the sport.
Like I apparently posted in this thread before, I don't believe that being clutch is a skill or some mystical innate ability.
No, but keeping your cool is.
