The Jordan Brand unveiled this week its newest shoe, the Jordan Fly Wade, the first Jordan signature shoe named after the Miami Heat guard.

The lightest Jordan shoe to date features the very recognizable elephant crackle print, a staple of one of the most famous Jordans, the Air Jordan III.

The shoes will hit stores on May 5 for $140 and unlike many Jordan releases, will actually be available for NIKEiD customization on May 29.

I talked to Dwyane Wade(notes) and Jordan creative director Mark Smith about the shoe, which is the first new Jordan I actually like.

Darren Rovell: What are you happy about with this shoe?

Dwyane Wade: At 13 ounces, this is the lightest shoe I’ve ever worn. The key for me was being able to be quick, but also have a shoe that’s very comfortable.

Rovell: You are now part of the Jordan brand. Do you feel more pressure?

Wade: Not more pressure. I actually had more pressure at Converse when I was the face of the brand and I was really the only one. Now I have a great opportunity to bring my marketability to the great Jordan brand. To be a kid from Chicago, who grew up with Jordans, it’s just so amazing to be a part of.

Rovell: After about six years with Converse, you switched to the Jordan brand in July 2009. More than three out four of readers, who voted in a poll, thought this was a good move for you. Why did you do it?

Wade: I’m so happy and thankful for Converse. When I was drafted, even though I was picked fifth, no one was knocking down the door to sign me to a shoe deal. They gave me a chance and helped me accomplish a lifelong dream, which was to have a signature shoe. But after a while, I did feel like it was time for a change. And since Nike bought Converse, the decision to come over to Jordan was supported by Nike Inc. MJ wanted me too and that was obviously a big honor.

Rovell: How close is the shoe you wear to the actual shoe someone can get off the shelf?

Wade: It’s close. It’s not like it looks the same, but it’s a totally different shoe. I made a couple adjustments during the season to make it fit to me.

Rovell: Mark, why do this shoe now?

Smith: Originally, we were going to make the Air Jordan 2011 the lightest shoe to date, but Tinker (Hatfield, Nike’s chief designer) saw the opportunity to build a shoe with quick explosive midsoles and work with Dwyane to unveil it as a late-season shoe.

Rovell: You always hear that kids wear Jordans with their jeans, but not necessarily on the court.

Smith: Jordan has had the reputation of being more of a fashion shoe, a bit heavier, so this is an opportunity for us to fly in the face of that.

Rovell: With lighter materials and upgraded technology, we still have a shoe that cost $140. Break it down for me.

Smith: Consumers might think that because it weighs less and we use less material, that it costs less. To be honest, the new materials cost more. Carbon fiber costs a lot of money. But we designers do care about prices and we want to make the best shoe for the best price.

I think DWade accomplished everything he wanted in his first shoe with the Jordan brand.

1) It's the lightest Nike basketball shoe ever with new composite materials to make it lighter, but also doesn't compromise it's durability as it's also a very durable shoe.

2) A shoe that's not only for the court but can also be worn with jeans (casual wear).

3) Performance shoe to aid in his performance on the court (Wade said he'll be wearing them for the playoffs and said he feels really good about it).

4) He wanted an aggressive sleek look but not overboard to where it's overbearing. Wade wanted a shoe that had those elements but in his style mixed in with the classic Air Jordan "look" and feel. He complimented all 3 nicely I think.

5) And last but not least, comfort. It's a wider shoe to support Wade's wider feet. But it also has good (but not too firm) ankle support. It's nothing like Kobe's shoe that provides horrible ankle support. This Wade shoe has very good ankle support.

I have wider feet and that's why I'm going to splurge buying 3 or 4 pairs of these in different colors ( but 2 blacks and one with red instead of the grey). If I had thin feet I'd only get one pair just to have them. But since this is a wider shoe and good wide shoes are hard to find sometimes, I'm going to buy a lot more. And of course it's a great looking shoe that's extremely light (I hate heavy shoes)

Jordan wanted to team up with Wade and Wade wanted to be with Jordan as Wade grew up in Chicago and was a huge fan of the air jordans back in the day. He wanted his name on it, and wanted his own jordan but designed in every way for himself and all his preferences.

Nothing wrong with that, as he's already had quite a few of his own sig shoes.

These are the best looking Jordans that have come out in a while. Futuristic looking but still has that retro soul of the first Jordans. Wade did well with his first signature shoe.

decent shoe but nothing unique about them. In fact they kind of look like a mix of a bunch of Jordans. When I took a quick glance I thought they were the Jordan 7's minus the little peaks or whatever on the side. Nice, but just looks like Jordan's.

the only jordans ppl buy today are the retroes 1-16...............The only jordan basketball shoes Ive worn for basketball were team jordans and those were at 110. I dont see these moving so much for 140 dollars especially since they dont look too apart, they look pretty safe from a design standpoint and they dont stand out, IMO they look like a team jordan design.....
kobe and lebron sneakers have a lot of HYPE and many limited colorways in which ppl camp out for.........these wades--------not so much

and in b4 wade hater..........but lets be honest here, the only jordans that ppl cop today are retro jordans even though the quality is shit
