View Full Version : I was playing ball earlier on a goal set at like 9 feet. Caught the ball deep....

...right under the basket.

One of those catches where Hubie Brown would say "Well once he catches it there you cant do anything".

And they didnt. The defense that is. I turned and went up to dunk it(as I had a few times...). I cocked it back a little bit like I was about to unleash hell and tear down the goal and take it into the house with me.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand....

I got hung. Not a little. I didnt gently get hung. I slammed the ball hard as I could directly into the front of the rim felt a stinging I was sure was my left kidney bursting....felt my back pop...and limped off the court in shame.

Now I was never Nique...but I could always and assume still can dunk on a 10 foot rim. Not off a standstill as I tried to do here but I was able to go right up and dunk that shit several times today. Its 9 ****ing feet....my standing reach is 8 and change. And I missed it. BADLY.

My legs started feeling old. Had zero lift. Zero. My back still hurts...

Enjoy youth while it lasts teenaged posters. There will be a day you make an ass of yourself trying to do what you used to do in your sleep.

And to make this somewhat NBA related...

I play at gyms like Lifetime Fitness, the Rey Meyer, X-Sport. You can't lower two basketball goals in regulation sized courts. Who would want to anyway? And what would be the point?

I think since we are regular people who can't ever dunk in a game, we like to feel like NBA athletes every once in a while. And since we can't really put trampolines and go all slamball might as well just lower the rims if you can.

It's just fun to play on shorter hoops sometimes when you're just messing around. Me and my friend played 2-on-8 against his younger brother and some of his friends on their hoop (set at 8 feet) and it was just fun.

You figure NBA players are about a foot taller than most regular people, so lowering the hoop a foot makes it about the equivalent of regular people being NBA size :oldlol:

Try to work out (Legs , Back , upperbody) 3 times a week and do some type of plyo if you plan on playing ball alot.

I'm 37 and still play in a City league vs younger generation who play Juco ball or guys in their early 20's...and still making it look like kindergarten math.

I feel you, kblaze. I'm gonna be 33 in a couple of months and while I can still play at a high level, I notice that certain things are falling off, namely my athleticism (at one point I was probably the fastest/quickest white guy above 5'10" you'll ever see, not to brag - and I'm 6'1"), my recovery time from injuries/soreness (since I don't play these days nearly as much as I used to), stamina, and especially the amount of niggling "injuries" I pick up nowadays. Some of that would probably go away if I got in better shape and played/exercised more again, but sometimes life happens and there's no time. I can still play at a high level (I still play with guys who play college ball and do very well for myself), but nothing like when I was 19-25 years old.

Getting old sucks. :oldlol: Once in a while I lament how hard it'll be when my body simply CAN'T do what I want it to. Right now it can, more or less; even if I'm not as fast/athletic as I was 10 years ago, I was coming from such a high athletic level that even at 80-90% of my athleticism I can hang with most guys. But 5-7 years from now? Damn, that'll suck. I never wanna become just an old guy spot-up shooter/rebounder/pick-setter, because what I love about the game is the creativity and dynamic nature of it. I love playing ball, but I love playing it at the level I'm accustomed to. Not sure how much I'll love it when some 22 year old is torchng me when I'm in my late 30's. :oldlol:

I hear you both. Though I dont play much anymore, my balance of mental and physical is good, Im still 33 years old. Certain quickness isnt there anymore. I played recently after 8 months off and was bombing it and moving well.....on offence. Then D time came and some little white guy did the same move twice and got me both times. I felt like I was in mud. Have to say tho, he tried it a third and I stuffed it back into his teammates face then stuffed his attempt. KBlaze how old are you? I'm 27 and still going strong, still dunking, still just as effective in games. I know my time is coming though, which is why I try to maximize and utilize everything and anything I have left. I don't want to take things for granted and I don't think I have to this point. I've always felt like I was one knee injury from never dunking again, so I dunk whenever possible.

And I positively cannot lie, playing on 9ft. rims is still a whole lot of fun sometimes. Once every few months the high school I coach at will have a rim set at 9 left over from a youth practice. And if this happens to occur on a night where open gym attendence is sparse, we'll have ourselves a little 9ft. showdown. It's fun enough where I have a hard time seeing how any basketball player wouldn't enjoy the experience at least once in a blue moon.

Lastly, I attribute my ability to jump as high as I do at least in part to being able to lower the rim to my level as a youngster. Sometimes 10ft. can just seem flat out unattainable at a young age, to the point where it may not even seem worth trying to jump high. Being able to start with a low rim, then slowly moving it upward as your leaping improves I feel can be very beneficial.

I actually find it easier playing full court 5 v 5 than 3 on 3 half court.

On half court you are constantly running like a fool. The game never slows down.

That's what happened to me. I'm working my way back in shape. As a teenager, I had the laziest work ethic and I could just pick up whenever and still be the exact same guy (albeit i'd be a bit winded but thats about it). So now i'm slowly but surely getting it back with daily exercise and i'm realizing how hard it really is when your body and metabolism starts slowing down.

I definitely think there are times where that can be true. In 5 on 5 there can sometimes be downtime and/or the ability to recover at different points. During a real game of 3 on 3, it can be constant motion and immediate posession changes leading to a constant stretch of play.

I've also found that 1 on 1 on 1 (where it's 1 on 1 until a basket is made, then a player takes the loser's place, etc.) can also be a heck of a workout. With so much hinging on each possession and the likelihood of a break coming at some point, each play seems to garner maximum effort from both sides at all times. That's rough. It's why hockey has line changes.

Also, I've won one (ONE!) real actual trophy in my life. It came from winning a four on four 9ft. basketball tournament called the Red Hacker back in 2000. It was actually pretty darn fun, though a lot of teams liked to pack the paint to prevent the dunk and thus making jumpers the more economical play. Still, my 6'6'' 230 pound brother had a field day. The game seemed to come a lot easier for him when he could drop step on the baseline for a Shaq slam rather than worrying about the layup.

I think every basketball player normally plays on regulation hoops, regardless of their own height. Playing on a nine foot hoop every once in a while still tends to happen sometimes for a change of pace. My freshman brother will lower his rim sometimes just for the heck of it and I'll be darned if I didn't do the same thing.

Update you dont need or care about:

Played on the same goal for a few minutes a week or so ago. But not very long so I was fresh. Managed to dunk on my friend off the backboard. he was playing me close. I just threw it off the backboard from like 10-12 feet spun off around him the Shaq "Black tornado" and went and got it one handed just as he pushed me in the back a bit. Clean. Which is hard on the lightweight rolling rims you fill with sand of water. A metal backed one in the ground the ball comes off hard. On those it loses a lot of steam when it hits. But I was used to that. Used to be my go to move playing on lowered rims with kids. Lit his ass up :pimp:

It definitely is lol. I was playing with some 20-25 year olds who were home from college during winter break last year and was killing them.
