View Full Version : Players in "takeover mode" in the playoffs

One of the best things about the playoffs is watching a great player carry a team on his back in a big game. Let us reminisce of past examples of players doing this. I'm not talking about a great overall game or great final statline, but moments IN a game where a player just goes on an absolutely unstoppable individual tear (like scoring 20 out of 22 points or something). Basically we're talking about "he's on fire" mode in big games. The closer to the end of the game, the better.

Here are some moments that always come to my mind when I think of this.

MJ vs. Pistons in '90:
Second half of game 3. Scored around 25 pts in a 10 minute stretch, just flat out dominated. Pistons kept trying every defender on him and Jordan destroyed them one after the other.

highlights from game (though you have to watch the game to truly appreciate): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVmCCKNgPlc

MJ vs. Blazers in '92:
game 1 first half, everyone knows about this. simply an unreal stretch of domination. watch 3:30 onwards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbBbOe97LfM and it doesn't stop...

LeBron vs. Pistons in '07:
What was it 28 straight points or something?

LeBron vs. Magic in '09:
Fourth quarter of game 5. Scored or assisted on 32 of 34 of in the fourth. Saved team from elimination (for one game at least).

Bird vs. Hawks in '88 (game 7):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Zs37Iueio 20 pts in fourth quarter, dueling with Nique, shot 9/10.

Bird vs. Pistons in '87 (game 7):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClBgA0mKNt4, scores or assists on every Celtic basket in the last 5 minutes, including a left handed bank shot from like 12 feet (who does this in crunchtime of the biggest game of the season?).

Reggie vs. Knicks in '94:
25 pts in the fourth and taunting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDSF8otJH8Y

Some role player "takeovers":

Horry vs. Pistons in '05:
this fukkin guy...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZdik09RGJI.

Dragic vs. Spurs:
Last year in game 3. Put them to sleep with 23 pts in fourth, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLWjQ7nZTkI.

These are the obvious ones, I'll put some more up later. Preferably not performances in the first round where the opponent was outmatched and stakes weren't that high (like say Barkley against the Warriors, Jordan against Heat etc).

Forgot to include Isiah in the OP, he's one of the ultimate examples of what I'm talking about :facepalm

His 25 pts in a quarter on a sprained ankle against Lakers. 16 points in a minute and a half against Knicks in '84. Lot of moments against Celtics too where he'd go beast mode for a quarter.

As a Piston fan, I can't stress enough how much this game broke my heart. When I used to watch this series on tape, I always skipped this game. He was certainly all of "Big Shot Bob" that day. Then Sheed had a true bonehead moment and left him wide open for three :facepalm That really shifted the series momentum.

June 14, 2000: Game 4 vs. Indiana (NBA Finals). The "I Got You" Game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7Lp5aQq4zI

Shaq fouled out early in overtime. When he went to the bench, Kobe said to him, "I got you." The eight points he scored in that overtime changed the series. Those 5 minutes were the reason the Lakers two games later won their first chip since 1988 and the ultimate reason they were able to three-peat.

True. I started to post some but the list became monstrous. He averaged 45 ppg and 56% for a 5 game series in 1988. He had some monster games against NYK in 1989. Fourth quarter of Game 6 against the Cavs in 1992... And I'm just listing some games that most people won't remember off the top of their heads.

Yea, same here ... and always against terrific defenders.

Game 4 v.s. Knicks (1993) - 54 points on John Starks and Doc Rivers
Game 2 v.s. Bullets (1997) - 55 points on Rod Strikland and Calbert Cheney
Game 5 v.s. Suns (1993 NBA Finals) - 55 points on Dan Marjele and Kevin Johnson

Jordan did that too ... see 13 straight FGA.

See Jordan in game 7 1992 v.s. Knicks.

This was before the fadeaway days, but in 87 Hakeem pushed the Sonics to overtime pretty much by himself in Game 6.

What about Tim Duncan's 37/16/64% game to blow the Lakers out of the playoffs in 2003?

Or his near quadruple double closeout game in the finals that year?

He also had a 34/24/6, 6 block, 2 steal game against the Mavs that playoffs to take a crucial game 3 @ Dallas when Dalls had stolen back HCA by winning game 1.

Then there's Shaq's 2000 Finals performances. Pretty much take your pick from any of those games. He had a huge 43/19/4 game, a 40/24/4 game (huge game defensively too), and a 41/12, 4 block game to close out the series.

Besides the obvious that will all be posted in this thread, I have witnessed one such game.

Brandon Roy did this in game 2 against the Rockets. He owned Shane Battier and Ron Artest, dropping 40+ on that team. With Yao in the middle, it was incredible to see him beat his defender and still score on Yao.

It left me with no doubt that he'd be a hall of famer. Now his knees are gone.

Wow, that is simply incredible.

God, I miss prime Tracy Mcgrady so much...easily would be the most versatile superstar in the league today.

I mean the guy could score in any way possibly, I cant think of a flaw he had in his offensive game. He could drive at will using his athleticism and speed, his jump-shot was smooth and sweet, he could pull-up the 3 pretty damn well, his post-game and fade-aways were awesome also...and he was a good free-throw shooter.

And the rest of his game was good too. The guy has always been an underrated play-maker and defender, people seem to forget how much court-vision and passing skills Mcgrady has, and people also tend to forget his defensive qualities. When he played for Orlando or Houston he didnt put as much defensive effort as in his Toronto days (for obvious reasons, stamina involved), but still he was pretty decent at defense.

Top 5 favourite player of mine of all-time. And its hilarious to watch videos like the one you posted and realize what teammates Mcgrady had in his best years (pre-injury). People cry about Lebron, Iverson, Carter...etc not having enough help in their prime. Well folks, look at the awful roster the Orlando Magic had from 2001 to 2004, and look what Tracy did with that team. Playoff team and almost upsetting a contender-like roster like the Pistons was.

Talking about takeover mode... which obviously requires you to go on a hot streak.. i am surprised kobe bryant isn't mentioned much? Isnt he supposedly the streakiest "craziest" most prolific shooter of all time?

lets see some vids!

Melo had a pretty sweet stretch from end of third to mid fourth quarter today. Think he scored or assisted on 20+ straight points. Really impressive considering the opponent and how he kept an awful roster in the game.

Where would he be on your list had NY got the W?

Wow, that is simply incredible.

God, I miss prime Tracy Mcgrady so much...easily would be the most versatile superstar in the league today.

I mean the guy could score in any way possibly, I cant think of a flaw he had in his offensive game. He could drive at will using his athleticism and speed, his jump-shot was smooth and sweet, he could pull-up the 3 pretty damn well, his post-game and fade-aways were awesome also...and he was a good free-throw shooter.

They all had it bad, but T-mac's was the worst. I hate it when Dirk apologists complain about their roster. That's just insulting.

don't really have a "list", just enjoy epic performances (and it's hard to rate because there are sooo many great ones). but it would have memorable for years down the road, strong shades of LeBron vs. Pistons for a minute before they double teamed the hell out of him.

It's amazing what hard trapping can do to take a player out of a game. Not sure why it's not used more often against superstars.

Brandon Roy's fourth quarter 4th quarter today. Season was basically on the line, and down 18 going into the fourth. Scored or assisted on 27 of last 33 pts, 18 pts on 8/9 shooting in the quarter, took on the Mavs possession after possession.

KJ vs. Blazers in 1992 WCSF (game 2)...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhIn6Ptxzhs (starts at Suns down 7 entering the third)

scores 18 straight points in third quarter (22 overall) and like 5 or 6 assists too. BEAST mode.

This was one of the closest 5 game series ever, Blazers just played better at the end of games to pull it out.

Wade game 3 2006 finals - 15 points in the 4th. Dude was all over the place at the end. Got the board off of IRK's final missed FT, made a clutch FT and tipped the pass of the inbounds play.

Wade game 5 2006 finals - 21 points in the 4th and OT. I think he scored the HEAT's last 11 points in regulation including the shot off the glass to sent it to OT.

Wade game 4 ECSF 2005 - Shaq out with a thigh bruise. Wade kills Washington with 40 point game including 22 in the 3rd.

It's a truly amazing thing. What's disappointing when a superstar player carries the team, but the team is still unable to pull through. Like Dwight Howard during this year's playoffs series against the Hawks.

The games the Magic won were the games Dwight didn't score a lot

Dwyane Wade vs. Boston Celtics in the 2010 Playoffs (Game 4)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-cel9zDV_s

On the verge of getting swept Dwyane Wade refuses to let it happen and drops 46 points under 67% shooting and was on a flat out zone from long range.
