It's not about the sellout dillweed.

It's the empty seats and apathetic crowd. You have MILLIONS of people that KNOW your fans suck. Miami fans should come on here and talk about their talent, their weather, their great lives, etc., but leave the "FAN UP" ---t at home.

You have potentially one of the top teams ever and your white t-shirts draped over empty chairs are designed to fool America that people are there. On top of that, in a 1-point game with under 2 minutes...YOU WERE SITTING DOWN!!!!!!! Drives me crazy, and I guarantee your team knows it/feels it.

Wathc MSG next Friday, watch the Bulls at home, watch OKC, and learn. You are lame.

I went to some Miami Heat games about 5/6 years ago when I was down there vacationing. The crowd seemed quite into it back then. Don't know what's changed.

In general, I think it's harder to root for a team of mercenaries. They are a great team and all, but the fans haven't "grown up" with them, so to speak. Outside of Wade/Haslem, and maybe someone else I'm forgetting.

It because ticket prices are outrageous now. At the risk of stereotyping people, people that tend to be a little more rowdy and dedicated can't afford the tickets, especially the midcourt ones that the cameras are always focused on. The Lakers have the same problem, the difference being the Lakers have a huge fan base

Chalmers?

And, I agree... But, even on their best days, Miami is an awful sports town. It is arguably the worst in the country. The fanbase for the Heat speaks for itself, but even The U has been really struggling with its football attendance in the past decade. I think they are averaging around 40,000 per game, which is really, really bad for a program like that.

The Dolphins also get very sparse attendance a good portion of the time. Watching the Browns-Dolphins last year was pretty pathetic. At the time, Miami had a winning record and they were very much alive in the chase for the Wild Card. The place was completely empty.

It is just a transient city and the enthusiastic crowds filled with people that have real civic pride that you see in other cities... It doesn't exist in Miami. It is a city filled with people who either just moved there or are on the verge of moving out and have no real passionate connection to the city or its sports teams.

It's true, and don't forget about the soon to be MIAMI MARLINS...

Baseball crowds in Miami are always scarce and now the county deducted salaries from city workers to bring down the Orange Bowl stadium we had into a 900 million baseball stadium...:facepalm

And yes, I'm from Miami, I have been watching the Miami Heat since the 2006 playoffs.

Now the reason why it is a bad sports town is due to the fact of our deteriorating sports franchises. We might have history but we don't have legacies. The Miami Heat brought basketball to life here, so hopefully that will change. Now that will depend if they'll become successful.

Miami can't get compated to Chicago, L.A., Boston, cities from Texas.

Forget the really big markets... You wouldn't and shouldn't expect Miami to compete with the largest sports markets.

The really faithful Midwestern cities that have life-long residents who have a family legacy of cheering on their sports teams are where you really see the difference. Places like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, etc.

These are places that are in even worse financial straights than Miami, but they support their professional sports teams -- win or lose (with the exception of the hopelessly uncompetitive MLB).

People in Miami are just... different. And, it doesn't have anything to do with things to do or the weather... It is the transient nature of a huge portion of the population and their lack of passion for the city itself (which reflects in its sports teams).

Heh, that must be why San Diego is such a great sports town.... oh wait.

I think your talking out your ass. It has everything to do with weather and the transient nature of the population.

If you ever lived in a midwest city... and then moved to a city like Miami or SD, you'd realize why those midwest cities are so involved in sports, and why the vacation cities aren't.

Miami ain't a sports town. Its a place where people party, screw hoes, smoke a shitload of weed and live it up on the beach. Think about it, when have you ever heard anyone say, "I'm from Miami son!" Heat, Dolphins, Flordia/Miami Marlins, they don't care much for them. Even the U isn't much compared to other batshit crazy sports towns like USC, University of Texas, or Alabama and Auburn.

:oldlol:

I've spent A LOT of time in South Florida... Specifically Palm Beach.... More specifically Singer Island. Again, it is a transient population that may be interested in sports, but not necessarily the local sports teams... The sports teams in the cities/states that they grew up in.

This idea that people in Miami aren't going to the games because of the weather is absolutely laughable. If you give the average person in Cleveland the choice of going to see the Browns in a playoff game in sub-zero weather or being flown to South Florida to spend a day at the beach, they will pick the former 10 times out of 10.

My grandparents on my mother's side have a place in Palm Beach that I've spent a massive amount of time at (and that includes many drives to the greater Miami area). My grandfather on my father's side lives in Tampa where I have spent a massive amount of time.

I've spent most of my life living full-time in northeastern Ohio. I have as much an experience in both regions as anyone and the difference in the population is quite obvious.

But, yeah... There aren't 20,000 people in Miami that can find the time to fill up AAA at the tipoff and actually cheer loudly for 48 minutes because they are too busy frolicking on the beach... Or, thinking about frolicking on the beach, I guess. :confusedshrug:

It has nothing to do with the inherent differences in the make-up of the populations of midwestern cities and South Florida.

F#ck outta here.

I really don't see the big deal of like 3 empty seats on one side, and 5 on the other, the American Airlines Center in Dallas had the same thing, but no one complains. It did in fact sell out ticket wise at 19,600.

I could see the point about the fans there, it really isn't that loud compared to a lot of other arenas, but making a big scene of a couple occasional empty seats is pretty sad.

Gotta be close to it, they've turned up at half time all 41 home games this season. For a team that created history with Lebron-Wade-Bosh, any other stadium would be full for the pre-game warm-up.

It's not just that. By the time Miami secured the victory with few minutes left I saw plenty of fans leaving the arena (when Wade was shooting FT). I mean come on what other cities do that..during the playoffs?

For people talking about the weather... no you are incorrect. It may seem like a valid excuse because maybe you're from a place with bad weather and as soon as the sun comes out you rush out in your shorts and t-shirt and ignore all else. But places that are known for good weather actually have good weather like all the time. Seriously. Why would we skip a playoff game for our team just because of conditions that will happen like 200 more times in the year.

Transient population makes more sense, and is the reason Vegas shouldn't get a team either. Also the ticket prices are horrible. I decided to try to check out a Heat game while I was there and the brokers were asking for way too much for a meaningless mid-season game. The reason why the seats don't fill up till later is probably a sign of the ticket brokers giving up selling the tickets and heading to the game. Still not a good sign for the fan-base though.

RedBlackAttack
04-17-2011, 03:04 AM
I'm certain he knew. He's played the Heat before. He's been to South
Florida before.

It is hard for me to believe that, given the circumstances of the unprecedented act of the three biggest FAs coming together on the same team (two of which were arguably the most coveted FAs of all-time), he didn't expect a little more enthusiasm from the home crowd. Just because he had been to AAA in seasons where the Heat were floating around .500 doesn't mean that he expected the same treatment for this superstar team.

And that's my point. Nobody cares about that sh*t. The only people who care about the fans...are the..fans. You think any prominent athlete bases their descion to play at a particular location due to how rowdy and avid the fanbase is? Child please.

I don't really care what the players think when they decide to sign in certain cities. That isn't the point of the discussion at all and, frankly, I'm not sure anyone gives a sh!t one way or another.

We are all just 'fans' on this message board, so of course 'fans' around the league are going to be a topic up for debate. We are allowed to critique one another just as we critique the players who wear the city's uniforms.

I mean... It is relatively obvious, is it not? And, I'm not even denigrating the city when I point out the transient nature of the population leading to apathetic attitudes toward the professional sports teams. There is nothing to be ashamed about when it comes to this sort of thing. It just is what it is.

I've really enjoyed my time in Florida over the years. It is a great place to visit. But, the local sports teams just aren't their thing -- by and large -- and the reasons are far more complex than 'weather.'

The fans suck but yet they still paid full price for the tickets?

Something doesn't add up

LOL ahahaha... Did you just really equate Palm Beach County with Dade County?!?! Just proves you have no idea what you are talking about. Once you head north out of Dade County the population demographics switch pretty dramatically. You obviously have a gripe with the city that stole your sports hero, and the fact that you care so much is honestly pretty damn weird.

I've spent plenty of time in Miami. It is a little over an hour drive, if memory serves, from West Palm Beach to South Beach. I like how you act as though they are on opposite sides of the f#cking state. Anyone who spends sufficient time in WPB is bound to take that little drive down I-95.

Do you know that 70 percent of Miami's residents are either first or second generation immigrants? 40 percent are first generation immigrants.

Those are the transient statistics coming from outside the f#cking country. Throw in the transients that the city gets from around the US and you get a population that is almost entirely made up of people whose families are from elsewhere.

THAT is the difference. My dad brought me up watching and attending games for all Cleveland franchises, his dad did the same with him and so on...

The sports franchises are a part of the culture in midwestern cities. You simply cannot have that kind of relationship between a franchise and a city when your population has immediate backgrounds from, not just all over the country, but all over the world.

But, yeah... It's the weather. You have a very simple mind.

Most likely that something was your GPA. Ever hear of the aftermarket?

Even if you consider the aftermarket, something is amiss here. Every top team gets a huge chunk of tickets purchased by scalpers then marked up on the open market. But then most top teams still end up with almost no empty seats for the playoffs. There have been rare instances, like the Nets team that got to the finals, where playoff games were so ill attended they needed to play fake crowd noise during live broadcasts out of embarrassment. (But they could still be sell outs!) But for the most part the Celtics/Lakers of the league will get all the seats filled regardless of the price because there is just that much demand.

It could be that the team is charging a higher face value, and that premium is being passed on to the fans who are unwilling to pay. Or it could be that scalpers are willing to cut their own throats and missing out on sales in favor of keeping crazy high prices. But more than likely the simpler answer is true, there just isn't that much interest in these games from their fans.

LeBron promised like 8 championships, why would people waste money on seeing the beginning rounds of a supposed foregone conclusion?

Looks like your education is in question if you this is how you analyze the problem. I don't see how any business will want to hire your brilliant mind of judgment.

So the NBA is supposed to be making their money off scalpers now? According to you they are the middlemen in distributing the tickets to fans. If the scalpers are not able to sell tickets to fans somehow it is the Heat organisation's fault an they should do something about it?

What a laugh. If anything scalpers should be eliminated from the market. They provide no value in the entertainment of the NBA. The Heat set up a great price for their tickets and they sold out. Obviously the scalpers think that the tickets are of great value so they bought them all. Now if people think the scalper's prices are exorbitant and refuse to pay it, well the scalpers are silly then. Doesn't reflect anything about the Heat since the fans will gladly pay the price set by the Heat to support the team. If the tickets can't sell it only reflects is the poor business model set by the scalpers.

According to you it Heat is seriously flawed for not being able to attract fans to purchase obscenely priced scalper tickets and they should do something to help those poor scalpers out. LOL. Ever wonder why the scalpers dare to set such prices for Heat tickets to scare the fans away in the first place? Because the Heat team is that good!

The heat sold all their tickets and made tons of money. Job done. Whether or not the tickets go to real fans or scalpers or rich people who can't be bothered to attend the games is not their problem. They literally can't do anything about it. Unless the heat plan to oversell their arena which is what I will suggest, but you can't predict whether there will be people coming in later fill the seats so it might not be a good idea.

As much as I love the Heat, definitely couldn't deny it. Our fans in South Beach f***ing suck.

Since 07 til the Beasley era, people simply dont give a f*** down there. They dont really give their A game unless it was an elite team coming. And even then, they still arrive late --- which is a common occurrence even way back in the Shaq era. Im pretty sure most of yall know that already.

BUT -- the people there usually step up and actually are great when it comes in the playoffs. This year is different because it's those rich ****ing fake bandwagoners who have the money to afford them. The real fans get stuck in worse seats, specifically in the upper bowl. I talked to my buddy who attended Game 1 and he said the lower bowl people sucked so ****ing badly (and we indeed saw that in the telecast) that the game sounded like a golf game. smh. But he did say to me that the ones in the upper balcony are the most active in the game. They're the first ones to start chants and boos, now only if we could switch those 2 and get the real fans lower where the TV focuses.......

I once attended a Pacers-Heat game last season (Beasley was still on the team) when I was having a vacation in Miami. And damn man. Even 10 mins after the starting line-ups and jumpball, the arena was only like 35% full. That was so embarrassing and disgusting.

So it's not surprising that Miami's crowd isn't exactly that great considering the players but still man, they gotta step it up in the further days coming. To the last night crowd's credit..........they kinda actually got alive in the 4th but still, you would expect and want them for FULL 48 mins of the game cheering. Not just for a quarter or segments.

And im sure others would feel the same way as me too. If we were only rich and can afford those type of tickets..........
