Like the title says, which nba players are nerdy/geeky do you know about? I don't know about you, but I'm always shocked when athletics are into nerdy things.

Danny Granger is a comic book guy, who collects superhero action figures and comics. He wants to build a batcave (seriously).

http://www.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikebasketball/en_PH/leap/danny_granger

Tim Duncan is a geeky guy. He is video game geek who plays Starcraft and World of Warcraft. He also likes to collect swords and dungeon and dragon stuff. He has a tattoo of Merlin from Arthurian lore, and he's into the WWE (could that be geeky?).

http://www.chinaspurs.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11149

Chris Bosh is a computer nerd. I read somewhere that he knows some programming languages and is a Harry Potter fan.

http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2011/02/16/chris-boshs-wife-was-initially-surprised-that-chris-bosh-read-books/

Kurt Rambis may not be a nerd, but he looks nerdy.

Kevin McHale I always thought was real nerdy looking when I was growing up. Same for Danny Ainge with his wailing desperate panic look all the time.

Those Boston teams were just nerdy in general. Bird looked like a total nerd. Even Dennis Johnson was kind of nerdy for a brotha. :oldlol:

Playing World of Warcraft is a bit hardcore I think. Not only it's an RPG, it's a MMORPG. While World of Warcraft is the most popular MMORPG out there, it's still geeky. I wonder what race/class he is. Now if Tim Duncan raids in World of Warcraft, then he's hardcore.

And he played Starcraft. That's geeky.

I dunno about the WWE. I'm not sure if that's consider geeky or not.

Do you get the notion people here is saying being a nerd/geek is a bad thing? Of course it isn't. It seems like you're being defensive over what's nerdy and geeky. I don't think there's nobody here that saying it's a bad thing. But there are just geeky/nerdy things out there, and it's interesting to see some NBA players are into that. Nothing bad, just very interesting.

Yeah, I do think Starcraft is more geeky, but I think WoW is very geeky too. It's fun to see that some athletics play WoW.

You're right about WWE. I wasn't for sure how geeky it is, but it's entertainment. You don't have to be a geek by watching it unless you're hardcore into it.

Lol, get over yourself man. I do read (On my 11th book for the year, I'm so intelligent aren't I?!) and I don't watch WWE, but I'm not under the impression that it makes me somehow superior. Some of the Ivy league people I know don't read and it's not because they're idiots. Some people just don't enjoy reading. It's personal preference like anything else. Do a lot of people mention that you have a lot of wasted potential btw?

On topic, as someone mentioned Spreewell is supposedly a huge tech geek. I remember reading that he had installed intercom system for his house by himself or something along those lines.

Bynum is a geek. I remember one off season a bunch of people seeing him in Hong Kong. He had stopped there for a few days on the way to somewhere else. The one thing people saw him doing while he was there? He went to video game stores looking for tools for hacking console video game systems. One Laker fan in Hong Kong supposedly sold him a jailbroken psp and an R4 card from his game store. (Mainly to hold multiple games without having to carry all of them.)

Gilbert Arenas has his own Halo team. He got busted one year for faking his Halo stats. He'd basically have his buddy challenge him to a 1 on 1 match using a 2nd live account, then he'd kill them over and over again.

There are other World Of Warcraft fans in the NBA as well that don't publicize it. I know of a couple that have taken private tours of the Blizzard offices because they were such fans.

Reading doesn't make you superior, but watching WWE makes you inferior.

Why would people say I have wasted potential? I'm approaching 46 this year! I have a family, 2 homes and a career. I have traveled the world, I'm pretty happy with what I have accomplished in my life so far. The next goal is to retire young, and hopefully start a small business and do charity work in the community in my spare time.

It is in MY opinion that watching the WWE is pathetic. That point of view does not define me. However, I believe that it is quite easy to stereotype WWE watchers. Have a look what type of people are in the audience next time. Start taking a mental note of the people you know watch WWE. If you're under 13 years old, it's okay, between 14-18 it's acceptable, over 18...... loser.

It depends on the amount of books and the ones that you read that will consider you a nerd or not. If a person picks up all of the Carl Sagan books and read them inside out, then I would think that person is a bit of a nerd. Or if you read a lot about quantum physics. That's nerdy. But not a bad thing.

But there are such things as bookworms, reading constantly. Especially if that person reads a ton of fantasy novels. But reading books don't make you a nerd, but it depends on what type of books and how many books that you read to me. If you read a lot, at the rate of a bookworm, then you could be classified as a nerd. I don't see anything wrong with it though.

"I want to learn how to build my own," he said. He rattled off his desired components: a 500-gigabyte hard drive, four gigs of RAM and a graphics card. Corbin was amused and intrigued. He picked out the parts, and as he stood on one side of the counter assembling the machine, his 285-pound customer stood on the other and studied his work. Corbin wondered if this was really a basketball player or just a very tall techie. The next day a Fry's colleague asked him, "Do you know who that was?" Corbin shook his head. "It's the new Laker."

Diablo 2 is a roleplaying game with wizards and magic and shit. It's pretty much as nerdy as something like Magic the Gathering or Dungeons and Dragons. Same ballpark at least. It's a video game, which is inherently nerdy. At the same time even within the whole video game scene it's easily one of the nerdiest games.

Reading on the other hand covers a huge spectrum of things. From decidedly nerdy to decidedly not nerdy.

nerd is someone that wants knowledge and likes to exercise his brain

most video games need very little brain function to master or beat, diablo, counterstrike, WoW being examples

reading is the expansion of knowledge, which is inherently nerdy, if you like knowledge and crave more of it, it`s nerdy which means there`s a nerd in everyone, some are just more nerdy than others and those nerds tend to be the successful people

if everyone was motivated and logical, most highschools would be 90% nerds, like schools in asia

Um playing video games isn't nerdy/geeky anymore. It used to be in the 90s when its popularity was only limited to ppl who really were into it, specifically nerds/geeks. Now we have Madden and Super Mario Brawl and all these other games that have wide appeal and we see everyone (including professional athletes) playing them nowadays. If you played in the NFL/NBA wouldn't you want to play yourself and your team? I'm sure a lot NBA players are down for some 2k11 just so they can play themselves.

you are a close-minded fool. to each his own. if we were all the same, the world would be a very dull place. I don't know the specifics of a liberal arts degree, but art, imo, is the highest form of existence. It is science with imagination. It is not coincidence that the words Earth and Smart have art within them.

sorry to be edgy, but that comment irked me.
different brains + different life experiences = different interests & different values. but hey, we mock what we don't understand. and while you are aiming at a target few others can hit, artists will be aiming at a target you cannot even see.

Have to agree with this. Ironically, it was while I was married that I would actually tune in to see what the Rock was cooking. :oldlol: Believe it or not, WWF/E can be a great Joking/Mess Around conversation piece with the right woman (Reality shows as well).

Strangely, it was after my marriage that I pretty much gave up on tuning in.

As for Video Games, I make no apologies for. If people can go to Vegas and spend thousands of dollars to toss cardboard and plastic chips around, I won't feel guilty spending 20 bucks to run through virtual towns taking down bad guys :oldlol:

So knowing alot about computers is nerdy but knowing alot about cars isn't nerdy? Someone explain to me how that works.

This guy is so on point! I love computers, love building computers, I love basketball, I love playing bball, I love working on my car, I take Muey Thai, come on now. I think what makes a nerd is the way they look and act. We all know how awkward a nerd looks and acts, I dont think it has to do anything with what they like to do. bynum may like computers but this is also the same guy that goes to the playboy mansion, he is not a nerd. If Matt bonner is into wow, then I would say he is a nerd because WOW is the biggest nerd game (besides magic the gathering), and he looks like a nerd.

Its not that nerdy, if your looking for a new computers you would look for the Hard drive size, RAM, and processor. Unless your some caveman

duh...but how many nba players actually care about that stuff?

another "nerdy" player would be Okafor

is known for not only being a good basketball player but also for being an elite student. His major at UConn was finance, and he graduated with honors after three years in May 2004 with a 3.8 GPA. One of his last courses at UConn was an honors-level finance course where students were allowed to make investment decisions for a small portion of UConn's endowment. Okafor was named the Academic All-American of the Year in 2004 for his work on and off the court.

Liberal arts? Hahahaha. Come back when you got a technical degree.

Liberal arts majors are among the most intelligent college graduates whereas those with "technical degrees" didn't learn dick in the way of communication, critical thinking, complex reasoning, or writing skills.

I'm still not understanding how having a high GPA in high school or college either one qualifies someone as nerdy, ESPECIALLY in college. You're paying upwards of $17k+/year to attend college (away from home) so you'd be pretty stupid to fail out or make bad grades.

It depends on your definition of nerdy. It could be use just to describe a super smart guy who is into scientific or technical things or could be a super smart person with low social skills.

Someone who has a super high GPA is a nerd in some extent. It doesn't mean that you have to be socially awkward or a dork. But there's nothing wrong with it. Like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are nerds, but they are super rich and they probably go out to party sometimes and stuff. So what? It doesn't mean that they aren't nerds and into geeky stuff. There could be a balance, but I guess terminology is a issue here.

Are you KIDDING me? Try solving a differential equation, or designing a computer, or engineering a complex embedded system.

You lib kids crack me up. I had no idea liberal arts and communication/writing skills were mutually exclusive!

you are a close-minded fool. to each his own. if we were all the same, the world would be a very dull place.

Nothing close minded when 90% of college grads are all "liberal arts" majors. Or in other words, were unsure of what to do with their lives.

The definition of nerdy in this thread is pretty ambiguous thus my use of quotes.

Nerd =/= Geek.

A nerd is someone who is really involved in nerdy stuff like Video Games, Cars, Computers, Programming, model building, comic books etc. People who collect cars/play video games/read comic books are not nerds. They are casual gamers/car collectors/comic book readers etc. A nerd is someone who does those things hardcore, knowing everything about the hobby they are involved in.

A geek is someone who is extremely socially awkward. Most of then just happen to like nerdy stuff.

People who do well in school/college are not nerds, they are just intelligent or hardworking. On the other hand, someone who wants to extend their knowledge way beyond their syllabus for the sake of learning is a nerd.

Also, dont degrade nerds to people who watch WWE dedicatedly. People who watch WWE dedicatedly are not nerds, they are just retards.

That being said, NBA players like Timmy are nerds, but that doesn't classify them as a geek. But since he likes WWE too, he is also a retard.

Depends on the video game. I think World of Warcraft is pretty geeky. Starcraft too. Nothing wrong with playing them, since they are awesome games. World of Warcraft is pretty addicting to some people.

A lot of people are gamers.
