ok, so from what i understand the biggest threat to surfers is getting knocked out when they wipe out and drown, right? why not just wear life vests? does it encumber their movements too much or is it just a macho thing?
i'm pretty sure this is a dumb question for surfers but for someone who has never been on a surfboard like me, it just seems so obvious. i mean, even skaters and bikers wear helmets now, ya know?

I've been surfing for years and I can tell you that It's definitely a macho thing. Safety has always been second in our culture. It's just the water, the surf, our bods and the ladies man.

the biggest danger are the reefs, and then maybe sharks but thats only if you're doing it in a big wave place like Hawaii or Australia. Like when i go to Ocean City the waves are pretty small but i can ride them and when i flip i generally doing it underwater and hit the ground pretty hard but usually my kinetic awareness is good where my feet hit the ground rather than my head but my shorts usually fall off due to the force then i put raise them back up against as i'm getting erect again.
Big thing is you should never be swimming alone. I have but its eerie. Theres no reefs unless i go to the inlet area but that place makes me paranoid since you're really not supposed to be swimming there.

a lifejacket won't do you much good when a wall of water tosses you around like a dirty sock in a washing machine.

Pete is strong like an ox, but I doubt even an ox could carry a full grown man up a tree.

I've tried surfing and it's funny how wearing a wetsuit is okay but a life vest is gay. I do a lot of wind surfing and wearing a life vest is perfectly acceptable. About 5 or 6 years ago I was windsurfing in Maine and really planing out when I hit something (lobster buoy?) and flew off the board and then was hit in the head by the mast when it came crashing down. I was semi-conscious for a few minutes and probably would've drowned if I didn't have a life vest on.

sorry kinesthetic or whatever. too lazy to do a google for correct spelling for you iinternet grammar nerds.
also erect = standing up from crashing and doing flips under water
when some of you get out of your basements and to the beach once in your miserable lives you will understand

Timely bump gigantes... Read this week a big wave surfer went missing after a 30 footer took him under, he wasn't wearing a vest but surfers interviewed said wearing vests had become more the norm in big wave surfing....

Makes duck diving pretty much impossible.
I bought a surf board in late Sept/early Oct of last year. I took it out to the ocean twice :lol

yea gts, i remember reading about that. the week before i saw some pictures from the place with allegedly the biggest waves in the world (can't remember where at the moment), and was wondering how there aren't more deaths in the sport.
getting that high in the air... maybe 30 feet or so... and then the wave collapsing and them being slammed to the bottom of the trough... pretty amazing they can avoid concussion on a regular basis. just crazy.

its not a macho thing, its a style thing. your riding a wave on a board the last thing you want on your is a orange vest.

Hell yeah
Lake Michigan have the best waves to ride on
Especially in the middle of January. I be pulling stunts there all day long.

All the extra padding worn in the NFL causes more injuries.
