The Houston Chronicle reports:

After a month-long search and long sessions debating the merits of three finalists, the Rockets offered McHale their head coaching position on Friday. McHale was chosen over Boston assistant Lawrence Frank and Dallas assistant Dwane Casey after meeting with Rockets owner Leslie Alexander on Wednesday to complete the interview process.

Though McHale is more celebrated as a Hall of Fame player who among other things inspired Rick Pitino’s rant about the inability to recapture the Boston glory days than as a coach, the Rockets were drawn to his apparent abilities as a leader and motivator.

Cool. I hope he has good luck with them if he accepts. If he gets them to the playoffs and maybe even wins a series he'd be a success.

Just as long as he's not allowed anywhere near the FO.

I hope not because I like him on television doing what he does.

why?

Word around the block is they canned Adelman because he didn't play the young guys, instead he tried to make the playoffs

now they move to McHale who never had to teach anyone anything?

Morey has done a great job getting talent, but you can't play everyone, seems like Morey's head is getting bigger than JKidd's kid's head

Are these the best Houston could do in terms of a coaching hire?

They should've just went for a college coach with a name factor.

awwww haha I thought he was funny with his Bird talking trash stories + he kept Chuck in check since Chuck respects him so much. It was better than the Charles/Webber tagteam

Its weird, Adelman, Larry Brown and Sloan are teamless, while Mike Brown and McHale are getting good offers :confusedshrug:

McHale is one of the very few likable characters on TNT. I'm sad to see him go.

Really?

He was GREAT as the Timberwolves coach before Big Al went down. They were above .500. I think they were like 11-8 with him or something. I'm a huge fan of him.

I wouldn't say he was a great coach, but he was infinitely better stepping in as coach than he was as a gm. I'm glad he got this job and hope he does well.

The chances of Sloan coaching again is slim.

McHale was one of the best analysts on TNT and NBA TV, it's a shame to see him not broadcasting. I hope he does a good job, but I just don't see it with this Rockets team right now, maybe I'm wrong though.

With Phil retiring, the league needed another pothead coach. Congrats Mr. McHale.

I don't expect much from him. Adelman did an excellent job considering the talent level he had to deal with. Houston needs to see improvement. That means they need to make the playoffs, and I don't see it happening. Yikes.

I don't think Scola needs any more post moves, he's complete.

Thabeet should be made to live at McHale's house and train, eat, breath basketball 24/7.

Eh, it's Houston, not like they're competing for anything.

Is this a 'temporary' hire?

He was a terrific basketball player, but he hasn't been great at anything else. He's a pretty boring commentator, too. Not hating. Just sharing facts.
I've got nothing but respect for a hall-of-famer athlete.
I hope everything works out well in H-town.

Well his strong suit is his ability to develope young players so having him around young bigs patterson and Jordan Hill should pay off for us.

I have serious mixed feelings, either way, Houston will not be competing in the west for a LONG time! We have our work cut out for us, beginning with cutting back some salary fat on our roster

I hope not because I like him on television doing what he does.Exactly, he's easily one of my favorite analysts.

I wish him all the best in Houston, but seriously he's not the answer for the Rockets.

C'mon guys... morey is still one of the best decision makers in the league.....

how many other teams have dealt with the same obstacles as hosuton in the past few years.....

i think adelman did a good job... but they could have been a playoff team last year.....

i have faith in morey......

give McHale a chance before ripping him a new one...
