Nobody can guard superstar caliber players one on one. It's a fact. Sure someone will have a great defensive game once in a while against them.. but that's usually with help defense and an unlucky game for the scorer.
I had this debate like 2 months ago because I said Blake Griffin can't be stopped one on one (obviously he's double teamed 50 percent of the time) and people thought it was an arrogant statement. It's just a fact. Especially players who post up or slash to the rim in Lebron's case.. are going to be double teamed or pick up a second defender every time.

1 on 1 can't nobody stop him. Too big/strong n fast... so that's why he get tripled and doubled soon as he cross that 3pt line

Yeah no superstar can be guarded one on one it takes a whole team other than Durant

they probably just called you a homer and dismissed you right? :lol
i think what you said is partly true, but against bad teams with less talent if you contain their superstars (by doubling 50 percent of the time) you will most of the time win the game.
So regardless of being unstoppable or not i think teams play defense that way because they realize that's what they need to do to win, not necessarily because that team's superstar is unstoppable
blake is dominant on the block, but if he comes back next year with a mid-post game THEN he would for sure be unstoppable

Maybe in today's league *cough soft, but in the days of handchecking and guards like Gary Payton getting DPOY there was plenty of real defense being played. Some people actually believe the 96 Sonics would have beaten the bulls in the Finals if Payton was on Jordan the entire series.

handchecking wouldn't make a difference on Lebron he's too strong and fast only players these rules help is the smaller weak guards.

:lol Probably.. I don't remember. I think the statement is still accurate though. If these star players could be stopped 1 on 1 why would double teams be sent so often? As for Blake's case.. or any other superstar/star on a noncontending team... I think the idea you're mentioning doesn't apply if you have a 2nd option like 22.3 ppg Eric Gordon next to them. I agree he's not "unstoppable" right now because of a lack of a jumper. That's definitely true. I just mean any time Blake get's in the post a 2nd defender immediately rotates over. Away from a Clippers example though Lebron saying teams can't guard him 1 on 1 is an accurate statement. I'd love to see Dallas not send doubles to Lebron.. or Miami not send doubles to Dirk.
If elite players got 1 on 1 coverage all game they would all average 30 ppg. The only star who never gets double teamed is Durant. Which is why I question people ranking him in the top 5 or anywhere near there. I mean Derrick Rose sees constant traps and doubles. Durant gets bullied into being an outside shooter with a single defender half the time.

It might actually bother him more since the reason why Lbron is so dominant is because of his athleticism and physicality. If you were to handcheck him on every possession it might actually expose some his basketball skills like his ball handling ability. Although he handles the ball incredibly well for his size I think it's fair to say that he relies way more on his athleticism than on his ball handling.

Exactly. Lebron isn't being a cocky as*hole. He's telling the truth.
Breaking news: Lebron just sneezed!
Seriously... Why is it tht every single thing Lebron does or says all of a sudden becomes thread or newsworthy? Who cares? He just said what basically every other superstar scorer in league history has said. This is not news.

That's like saying we should ask Derrick Rose what happens when Jeff Teague comes to town . Just because certain players are more effective on you... doesn't mean they are locking you up 1 on 1. Locking someone up is Granger holding Lebron to 8 points on 3-20 shooting or w/e a few years back. Even then Lebron dropped 35 or 40 on him in the same season. Everyone has an off game and star players can't be stopped 1 on 1 99 percent of the time (Durant is an exception currently).

Maybe in today's league *cough soft, but in the days of handchecking and guards like Gary Payton getting DPOY there was plenty of real defense being played. Some people actually believe the 96 Sonics would have beaten the bulls in the Finals if Payton was on Jordan the entire series.
I wish these clowns would actually watch games from their golden era and realize how common 70+ FTA games were, how so many flagrants were "soft" in the 90s due to the bad boys era, and realize how many touch fouls were called amongst other things. The most physical era in the NBA was actually the 70s. And rules eliminated REAL, physical handchecking in '79:
1978-79
Clarification added to prohibit hand-checking through “rigid enforcement” of rule allowing a defensive player to retain contact with his opponent so long as he does not impede his opponent’s progress.
In the 80s, I've seen handchecking get called all the time. Commentators pointing out on replays how the guy was not allowed to handcheck etc. SI published an entire feature article in the 80s because NBA defense was perceived as a JOKE. Poor help defense, no zone, less and less physicality, and so on. That's how everybody thought of it at the time. Handchecking was still allowed in the backcourt however to pressure the ball handler, but they eliminated that altogether in '94.
The same BS complaints people have now, people had back then. I saw old timers from the 70s on half time segments making fun of how you couldn't guard Jordan because of all the favorable rules for him (isolation, lack of physicality etc). I'll gladly upload video of couple of them talking about this because I think I saved it somewhere. And the same "handchecking" complaints were going on in '93, in fact here's an NY Times article:
Published: March 28, 1993
The increase of flagrant fouls and violence between players in today's National Basketball Association is a direct result of the elimination of the defensive hand check from games. Physical contact has always been a part of modern professional basketball. But when the N.B.A. abolished a defensive player's ability to use the hand check as a way of slowing down the offensive player he was guarding, players began finding new ways to keep their opponents from going to the hoop. As a result, the hip check has replaced the hand check, as frustrated players try to limit their opponents' scoring chances.
It is time for the N.B.A. to reinstate the use of the hand-check.

Why do you think they send double teams or immediately clog up the paint or build a wall or throw themselves at him flopping for potential charges or even if he slithers through the team defense inside the paint they try to foul him if they can stop the shot, hopefully wrap him up?

Knowbody can SHUT him down is more like it.. On a given occasion a few players Player can guard him on a Possession or a short stretch but hen Lebron is in attack mode hi cant be stopped.. As far as Marian goes Lebron was feeling good with his jumper the first two games and also content with getting his teammates involved(PLus Wade was feeling it gm 2) On the Few occasions lebron did Drive he got to the Rim 2 Times for a Big Dunk, Another He short armed a Layup at the rim. In Gm 3 on the Road I expect Lebron and Wade to be on the attack alot more and Lebron especially should double his total FT's from the first 2 games combined. Look for Lebron to prove his point tomorrow night going for 30+..

LeBron's technically 10-5 against LA, but when Kobe plays he's 10-3. Their averages in those 13 games are:
LeBron 27.7/7.2/7.3/44%
Bryant 27.8/5.5/5.4/41%
LeBron's owned Kobe in head-2-head match-ups. That simple.

Kobe did guard Lebron and shut him down.. Watch the video dummy... After Kobe hits the shot and runs back, who is he checking?
Also after Kobe made that third straight bucket, they started sending double teams his way. so STFU!

Still waiting for someone to provide a link to authenticate that he actually made the statements, but if so, it's odd-timing considering what happened in the last game.

Lebron is to the NBA, what Lil B is to hip hop/rap. Retardation.
He's right.
Who can stop LeBron 1 on 1 when he's gonna get away with a travel or an offensive foul each time he goes to the basket?

Fact, I would apply this to every superstar though. Defenses collapse, etc. on great players. It's rarely 1 on 1 for them.

I agree with him you can not shut the man down when he is on one.
But is that best for the team to say?
What if LeBron has a huge game and Wade's numbers suffer and the Heat lose.
OUCH the media will have a field day.

Maybe in today's league *cough soft, but in the days of handchecking and guards like Gary Payton getting DPOY there was plenty of real defense being played. Some people actually believe the 96 Sonics would have beaten the bulls in the Finals if Payton was on Jordan the entire series.
:oldlol: if you think Gary Payton is stopping LeBron James.
And his defense on Jordan in the 1996 finals has gotten so overrated over the years, just like he is.
Lebron James cant be guarded 1 on 1 and contained/or shut down.

Bringing this back.
It's ironic that he said that when he couldn't get pass Kidd or post up Kidd. Marion is also guarding him pretty well. Why in the world is he struggling for 5 straight games is crazy.
Dirk is more unguardable than LBJ is atm.

Whenever dirk puts up a jump shot even if contested I always expect it to go in. It is ridiculous how good a shooter this guy is.
That being said, why the fk do guys like rondo have such a bad j? With enough practice you'd think he would have a reliable one and given the amount of space teams play off him, he should be hitting that mid j a lot more.

It's probably a mental thing at this point. Mechanically, his jumper looks fine. I bet he makes them all in practice. Ben Wallace was probably a great freethrow shooter in practice too.
