View Full Version : Mark Cuban Said To Be Interested In Buying Euroleague Champions Panathinaikos Athens

Euroleague

The world in Greece is that Mark Cuban is interested in buying Euroleague champions Panathinaikos Athens. The club is up for sale and the asking price is said to be between $150 million - $200 million.

Panathinaikos has a yearly budget of $45 million, which is the same as what the new max NBA budgets will be supposedly under the new CBA. Panathinaikos plays in a 19,000+ seat arena.

The word is that if Cuban buys Panathinaikos and there is an NBA lockout, that Dirk Nowitzki would play with Panathinaikos during the NBA lockout.

150 - 200 million is too much (I'd say 100 should be it), but generally, I think that basketball has a lot of potential and it would absolutely make sense for an NBA owner to invest there:
- there's still a lot of untapped potential for basketball in Europe. From a business standpoint, there's probably more room for growth than in the NBA
- Euroleage team could be used as an improved D-League team to bring young and promising players up to speed while at the same time being able to generate hype in Europe
- The lockout would be the perfect moment to start it, an NBA owner could at the same time generate hype for the bought club by playing his NBA team there and prepare the NBA team for the rest of the lockout season in the NBA, giving his team a headstart
- Cuban would probably be the right guy to do it.

Cons:
- Greeces economy is faltering, so this might pose serious business problems for the next years

In the late seventies and early eighties several Greek coaches began to study their American counterparts like University of North Carolina's Dean Smith and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, attending seminars in the USA and inviting the coaches to Greece. The Greek National Team toured the USA playing the Tarheels, and the Tarheels with Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins visited Athens to win a tournament there. But the key to Greece's success was ex-Seton Hall Greek-American guard Nikos Galis, an unstoppable scorer in college who continued his amazing play in the Greek basketball league. Galis, considered Greece's Michael Jordan, burned the UNC Tarheels for 50 points in an exhibition game in Chapel Hill.

I cant even pronounce the PandorasBox Athens. Waste of money buying that team.

If Dirk wanted to play for a rec league he could stay in America. Atleast he'll get better competition from guys who f*cking DEFEND and play PHYSICAL. If Cuban wants to waste money on a team that won a recreational league title? Go buy an Arena football team. Dirk is not playing with them scrubs. Meeting Michael Jordan

The year 1982, is remembered by Greek basketball fans as the year when two legends of the game met in the same arena. Greece faced the UNC Tar Heels (North Carolina College) of Michael Jordan, in Sporting's arena.

25 year old Galis, played just according to his standards, but that was more than enough for young Jordan (who dunked flying over the head of a Greek player in that game) to say about him: "I think he's superb, he's a complete basketball player". During the game MJ teased Galis saying: "You're bad", as Nick confessed later.

Galis and Jordan met again playing in an exhibition game for the "DIMITRIA" festival. Galis scored 50 points this time and Michael Jordan, totally stunned, said: "I really did not expect to find such a good offensive player in Europe, especially in your country"!

BTW, lots of sports teams lose money. The purpose of a sports team is not to first and foremost make money. It's nice, and ultimately you want to, but if you want to make money and not worry about wins, losses, etc. - don't own a sports team. Also, most of the teams are mixed with other business, or conglomerates, like the Yankees also have Yes, etc. It's rare you get a clear picture of how a team does.

So saying Team X is more sucessful than Team Y because they made more money is stupid. It makes no sense.

Every one of them would beat the Mavs. Good ones like Spain, Greece, Argentina would beat the Mavs by 20-30 points easily.

NBA starters and 6th men go to Euroleague and become total scrubs regularly, every season. Numerous scrubs from Europe that can't even make a Euroleague roster get drafted by the NBA and play in the NBA...every season.

You say this all the time, and you never name names. And do you honestly think guys who know they're going to the NBA are going to try in the Euroleagues? Please.

And every year, guys who suck in the NBA go overseas, care to explain how Keith Langford is considered a good player over there, while he couldn't even make an NBA team?

I list names all the damn time and the NBA only fans like you just pretend it did not happen and lie about it. You are so full of it.

Explain how Gary Neal can't make a Euroleague team and is good in the NBA?

For every NBA player that is bad in NBA and goes to Euroleague and becomes good, there are about 3-5 good NBA players that go to Euroleague and suck.

Jordan wasn't a "legend" at age 19.

Still, impressive to score 50 in any game. Galis was a hell of a player.

Anyone who goes from the NBA to the Europe or anywhere else to play is no longer starter/6th man quality. The only exception to this is Josh Childress and he sucked this past season in Phoenix.

It's possible for a player to HAVE BEEN an NBA starter and go to Europe. But their reason for going to Europe is that they can't get an NBA job anymore. They've gotten worse. It's not like they were being offered the MLE and chose to go to Europe.

I said name a good NBA player who left the NBA while he was still good, and became a "scrub" in hte Euroleagues. I've asked you to name one three times now, and you haven't yet.

Gary Neal briefly played in the Euroleague a year after college. What a great example. He was basically a rookie.

Your general world sports/basketball knowledge is incredibly anemic.

Like who you euroBUM? Name them right now.

Josh Childress was the only notable American who left the NBA to play in the euroleague. And he did so for financial reasons because he ended up getting paid more money there than he would have in the NBA.

What NBA starters, 6th men go overseas to play every season?

2010-11 season -
2009-10 season -
2008-09 season -
2007-08 season -

Thats 4 years, put the names of every player down or shut up.

Sidenote: Why do you avoid "John" Scheyer signing with the Maccabi little hats? Afraid to admit you are wrong you stubborn mule? How do you say MULE in greek? Let me guess, Lakas.

There aren't any. He only likes to bring up people like Sean May, who can't make an NBA team anymore, as his examples. He thinks if they were good enough to play in the NBA or get drafted in the NBA at some point that they're good representatives of the NBA when really, they're players that NBA teams don't want anymore. Sometimes the NBA's garbage goes over to Europe and becomes Europe's garbage. Sometimes the NBA's garbage goes over to Europe and become good players. Either way, Europe takes the NBA's garbage. When was the last time a Euroleague SCRUB came to the NBA and tore it up?

The Mavs are the champions of USA/Canada only. Fact.

the Mavs would kick the shit out of every single team from Europe.

FACT

do you even watch basketball?

do you not realize that of al the NBA teams, Dallas is the most equiped to play against international competition?

and :lol at trying to say national teams would beat the Mavs. Not one of those teams, save for probably Team USA, would stand a chance.

I like when he tried to prove his point that the Mav's aren't world champions by saying that national teams would beat them.

It's a club competition, not a national one. An awful point to try to make.

Rudy Fernandez won the Spanish King's Cup MVP twice. Tiago Splitter won the Spanish Supercup MVP twice and was the Spanish league's MVP once. They came over and haven't really done anything. Take any recent NBA MVP or Finals MVP and place them on a European team. The NBA player would dominate instantly.

I think the Lakers would be the best equipped. Celtics were before they traded Perk. Dirk wouldn't get all those soft free throws whilst the Lakers bigs and Artest would be able to body up.

Why would Cuban buy a euro team when he owns the WORLD champion Dallas Mavs? You dont go from filet mignon to salisbury steaks. Cuban is about as interested as "John" Scheyer was in signing with the Maccabi Little Hats. Speaking of Scheyer how does he look for them anyway No Links Yo?

I cant even pronounce the PandorasBox Athens. Waste of money buying that team.

If Dirk wanted to play for a rec league he could stay in America. Atleast he'll get better competition from guys who f*cking DEFEND and play PHYSICAL. If Cuban wants to waste money on a team that won a recreational league title? Go buy an Arena football team. Dirk is not playing with them scrubs. Why would Dirk play with the Panorama Athiests anyway? He just defeated the Miami Heat. He's going to sit in America and have sex, get drunk and smoke.

Much better than playing with a bunch of guys who all look like f*cking brothers.

Euroleage is a fool but with this post you are dangerously reaching his level of stupidity.
