View Full Version : The legendary John Wooden said Kobe Bryant is the best player he ever seen

Ne 1

Things to consider:

- He has watched every great player in history.
- He is aware about the strengths and weaknesses of every era.
- He watched a TON of Laker games (so it's not like he was being hyped into believing it) and has seen more games than anyone else on this site.
- As far as I know, he has no agenda. Completely unbiased opinion here.
- This is John freaking Wooden. He knew more about basketball than you could ever hope. He would laugh in your face if you ever presented him with a bunch of trash stats to make your case, he understands that there is more to the game.
- Jerry "the GOAT talent evaluator" West named Kobe as the top 5 players ever right? If you are going to agree with him on everything, then why ignore this?

Because he is not the best ever or even top 5. He lost with HCA twice and was swept as well and never led a championship team in production. Never led a team in Win Shares on the season anytime LA won it.

Kobe is one of the most skilled ever, but imitation of Mj is still imitation. Nothing is better than the original. If Kobe was better I think his averages would be higher and his field goal percentage would be better. At least close to Mj.

In 2011, Gasol led the team and was 2nd in the league in Win Shares. In the playoffs Kobe was 5th on the team in Win Shares and 6th in Win Shares Per 48 minutes.

Just like every formula in physics is made up. It is the made up formulas that enable things to work and flow. Without made up formulas things such as torque wouldn't exist which in turn means you would still be walking from point A to Point B as things such as cars wouldn't exist without those made up formulas.

Basketball can't be simply contained by numerical data, and formulas ... dork.

I want you to go to a gym, or a barber shop ...

Say Gasol is better than Kobe, and watch the looks you get.

At the gym someone may even throw a ball at you for your stupidity.

At the barber shop you may get stabbed with some clippers.

Then give them your reason why your clear idiotic and wrong opinion is what it is ... "win shares"

And watch everyone start laughing at you. Then explain how basketball is a formula.

I got to go to the post your pic thread right now and see if you're in there. You can tell based off pics who plays and who doesn't and who is just a dork trying to talk about basketball. I see Bob Costas, Jim Grays, John Hollingers and a bunch of jock sniffing look alikes thinking they know what they're talking about.

Win shares ... OMG I've heard it all since joinging ISH.

Let's not get drink too much.
Every person in their right mind knows that Kobe is clearly the leader of the Lakers, and clearly more important to the Lakers.
Pau Gasol, the thing is, whenever I see him play, I barely remember him doing anything in the game. At the end of the game, he has something likee 17/12. That was the quietest double double I've ever seen.
Pau never straight out dominate games. Kobe does.

None of us can truly appreciate Kobe game until he is long retired. Too much nostalgia for past players. See the movie Midnight in Paris. You realize every era thinks the previous was the golden age. Kobe will be the goat to 90% of lakers fans. He just won't be that to me.

It's Jordan and Kareem in my opinion. They are 1-2.

While I disagree greatly with his opinion, you have to respect who this is coming from. A person with Wooden's wealth of experience and knowledge of the game had a reason for saying what he said. Again I don't agree, but what it does show is that there is indeed no official or concrete criteria by which to make these assertions, and frankly a case can be made for several players as the GOAT contingent upon the individual's measuring stick.

Kobe's 05/06 and 06/07 years are probably the most overrated seasons in NBA history. All those scoring numbers and all he has to show for those years are first round @$$ kickings, 3-1 choke, and quitting on his team.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVWFIGhD980

Kobe's 05/06 and 06/07 years are probably the most overrated seasons in NBA history. All those scoring numbers and all he has to show for those years are first round @$$ kickings, 3-1 choke, and quitting on his team.
The fact that Kobe got those teams even into the playoffs is truly a miracle.

not even the best player of his Era
that honor goes to Tim Duncan
Yeah.After Jordan-era,Duncan (1999,2003,2005,2007) and Shaq (2000,2001,2002,2006) dominated over the next 10 years.

05-07 Kobe=truly the GOAT.

more like watered down version of 1995-1998 MJ.

more like a combination of 1998 & 2001-2003 MJ.

You just got fooled by overnight adaptation of sissy rules by NBA,

Even 1998 MJ can go on 40 pts consequitive scoring spree for 20 straight games under 2005-present rules.

Hell even wizards MJ will put a good 6-8 games 40 pts streak. too easy.

Win Shares? Really!? Win Shares?
:facepalm
Have you ever even played basketball?

Yeah I have and its a stat(shouldn't be really used to judge, but) that isn't important to Kobe fans.....funny that when u start looking at the other All Time Greats they all lead their teams in this category...yet when it comes to Kobe...its a bogus stat...lmao....kinda like the TS% u guys use to bolster his accuracy at the rim....free throws??? Really??

Is there any stat the Kobe fans like?

He's only 13th all time in playoff ppg. His efficiency is good, but no great.

All of the advanced stuff doesn't rate him very high.

Numbers wise Kobe does not grade out very well compared to the other all time greats overall. Doesn't mean Kobe isn't great, but its something that just can't be swept under the rug.

So Kobe was more important to his teams success during the Lakers '01 run, right? Led Shaq by .1 winshares and all, just saying.

.1, albeit by a hair, is still better. Kobe led the Lakers in winshares throughout their 2001 postseason run. According to some of the stat buffers, Kobe was more vital to their success.

I don't think anyone sans trolls and Kobe nutjobs believe he's the GOAT. I don't even have him in my top 5-8.

No finals MVP hardware and Shaq dominated in the finals, Kobe dominated Spurs series, both dominated in Kings series...this isn't about Kobe's one season, it's about his career and his Finals performances, his overall play in the playoffs is anything but legendary

Likewise Kobe in '09 and '10. He won both Finals MVPs but you got mini-Hollingers claiming Gasol had more win shares (in 2010), thus he was the better player. The double standards here are hilarious.

Take a bite.

25/5/5 is still elite and good enough to be ranked top 10 by the vast majority.

I never said Gasol was better than Kobe, only a retard would think that(stats should be used in perspective, not as a tell all...perspective: Most other greats dominate their teammates in winshares..except Kobe), but in that Celtics series at least Gasol was mentioned for MVP consideration, with several people believing he deserved it....and I have Kobe ranked 10 as of now, never stated he wasn't a All time Great...I stated he is not GOAT

Wow, it is really amazing how many people love to talk about something that they really have no clue about. I know this is a very old thread, but I just could not believe the disrespect handed out to Coach John R. Wooden. This man has the .out prestigious award in college basketball named after him for a reason.

Before Kobe Bryant became Wooden's choice for the best player he ever seen, that honor went to MJ and before MJ it was Kareem and so on. Before I had ever heard about Wooden's comment, I had Kobe as the best I have ever seen also. I have heard and seen all of the greats play, radio, TV, in person and a library of super 8 film footage on Miken, Russell, Baylor, West, Cousy and Wilt. Before Kobe, my selection was Wilt. Wilt was the best athlete the NBA has ever had. Wilt could actually play every position on the floor damn good. Before the NBA he played with Globe Trotters where he displayed his talents at point guard, shooting guard, and not to mention, Center. If stats is your weapon of choice, Wilt should be your guy. Holds more NBA records then anyone. Held Kansas University high jump record for many years, ran the 100 yard dash like no bodies business, one hell of an outfielder in baseball. Also consider by many as not only the most dominant NBA player ever, but held the same title on the beach volleyball sand. Now I love me some MJ, but one concern I have with him, he uses Championship titles as his main focus for the best player title, so if he is correct with his bases for his selection, then Russel should have the title locked in. Now for you Stat freaks, if someone can tell me how many individual stats are on the sheet and how many non-individual stats there are and you come close to being correct, I might listen to your BS. Wooden never really paid any attention to stats, he also throughout his entire Coaching career only scouted one team before they played them and he scouted that team because Kareem had a serious eye injury and might have to sit out that game. Will continue soon on why the Black Mamba is my choice for best ever.
