View Full Version : The NBA Artificially Inflating Player's Heights Is Getting Ridiculous

Euroleague

Jan Vesely 7-0 in NBA (6-11 in Europe)

Jonas Valanciunas 7-0 in NBA (6-10 in Europe)

Donatas Motiejunas 7-1 in NBA (7-0 in Europe)

Danilo Galinari 6-10 in NBA (6-8 in Europe)

Andrea Bargnani 7-0 in NBA (6-10 in Europe)

Jonas Jerebko 6-10 in NBA (6-8 in Europe)

The list goes on and on.............

The NBA is constantly adding 1-2 inches to the heights of players from Europe. They all magically grow 1-2 inches the second they get off a plane from Europe onto US soil.

It is also absolutely hilarious that the NBA claims that NBA players are "taller" than Euroleague players, when the Euroleague has taller players on average - even with using barefoot heights, unlike the NBA.

I am sorry, but the NBA has become such a joke under David Stern.

1.) your schtick is tired

2.) I don't know about the others but Danilo Gallinari is a legit 6-10, maybe even taller. He's grown since entering the league.

In the case of Andrea, I'm pretty solid on the claim that he is a legitimate 7 footer but I couldn't tell you about the others. The NBA has been deceptive with their listed heights for years and I'm not exactly sure why to be honest. Isn't Barea said to be listed at 5"11 or some measurement that's clearly wrong...

It's no secret that NBA players are listed taller than they actually are. It's been like that for ages.

These are some of examples:
Larry Johnson listed at 6'7 was actually 6'4.
Hakeem Olajuwon listed at 7'0 was actually 6'10
etc......

Larry Johnson was actually 6'5 1/2" at the pre-draft camp so pretty much 6'7" in shoes. The problem is that some players are listed at their barefoot heights and others in shoes, also some others are inflated well beyond their shoes heights. For example, John Starks was listed at 6'5" and admitted he was really 6'2".

NBA always lists players taller than what they actually are, it happens but it is rare to see an NBA player be listed shorter than what he actually is.

Kevin Durant is one of the players that is definitely listed shorter than what he actually is. He is listed as 6'9 but he is at least 6'10, but I am pretty sure he is 6'11 though.

Dwyane Wade is 6'2 from what I heard although I am pretty sure he is at least 6'3. People who have met him say the guy is barely taller than 6'2, so he is probably 6'3. Not that it matters, even if he was 6'4 he is still pretty undersized.

It's simple guys. http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/measurements.php?year=All&sort2=DESC&draft=100&pos=0&sort=8

Has all their heights. Look, nowadays they measure guys barefoot and in shoes and give their height in shoes, therefore you can take off at least 1 inch to everyone's listed height. Some guys could have grown a bit so you have to take that into account, but most guys at 18 aren't going to grow much more. Dwight was 6'9 without shoes at the camp, 6'10.5 in shoes and they rounded up to give him his 6'11. Lucky for him he has the reach of someone 7'0 or taller and an amazing wingspan making his PF like height not a big deal.

Back in the day they measured most guys in barefeet. This is why you see Kobe at least an inch taller than most guys listed at 6'6... This is why you see KG listed at 6'11 towering over Dwight (KG is like 6'11.5 without shoes).

bottom line they aren't inflating heights, they are just measuring them in shoes. I'm guessing Europe doesn't do that. I don't know why they started doing it in the first place... probably just to make them seem so superhuman.

nah, he is 5'10 for sure.

stood face to face with him when he was out of shoes several times and he is the exact same height as my brother.

most of the NBA heights seem to be measuring the players with their shoes on.

TheCorporation

It has been this way for some time.

Some players could in fact grow. Or Euro could be using heights without shoes vs NBA using WITH shoes.

Contrast that with players from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Russell was listed at 6-10 in college (and he claims that that was his REAL height.) Wilt claimed he was "only" 7-1 and change, yet, he was clearly taller than 7-2 Gilmore when the two faced each other. Furthermore, there was a photo taken in the 90's, in which he was at least as tall as Shaq, and noticeably taller than Patrick Ewing, who was listed at 7-0. And based on my personal loss of height since my peak, about an 1 1/2 inches at age 56, I suspect that Wilt was at least 7-2 in his prime (and many claimed that he was even taller.) Kareem was the only player that I saw that was taller than Chamberlain, and he was listed at 7-2, so in actuality, he was probably at least 7-3 (and every bit as tall as the 7-4 Sampson.) Elvin Hayes was listed at 6-8 in college, and when came out of college, he was suddenly 6-9 1/2. Bill Walton was listed at 6-11, but those that saw him would attest to the fact that he was over 7-0.

Then, think about this...most all of those players were measured in barefeet, if they were even correctly measured at all, and you could add one to one-and-half inches in shoes. So, the many 6-11 players that Wilt faced in his NBA career, would be listed at over 7-0 today. And Wilt would probably be listed at at least 7-3 TODAY, while Kareem would be somewhere around 7-4.

Kind of puts a little different perspective on the greats of the 50's, 60's, and 70's doesn't it?

Even though these are official listings, some of them still look suspect to me.

For example: Ray Allen is listed at 6'5" without shoes, but I doubt it.

Also, KG is listed at 6'11" without shoes and Vin Baker at 6'11.5"; I was at a game when Baker was with the C's and he linesd up with KG and KG had a good 2 inches on him (or so it seemed from my vanatge point).

I know this thread is old but in Wilt's first book he said the 6'2" Jerry West's arms were as long as his. Wilt had average length wing span for his height, and smallish hands. Not Artis Gilmore type small though. Nate Thurmond had very long arms. Very few men grow at all after the age of 17 years. Doesn't matter if you are 5'9" or 6'9". Saying these guys grow when they are in college or thee NBA is wrong. Unless they have Acromegaly which few in the NBA have had. Very few guys are as tall as they are listed. 6'0' guys are magically 6'2", 6'7" are suddenly 6'9". Guys 6'10" are 7 footers. I know a guy who is over 7'2". Been around him all my life. I am a Uconn grad and have had access to players since I graduated in 1983. I work games at Gampel Pavillion and the XL Center. The NBA inflated their players height for marketing purposes. Being listed at 6'0" is better than being listed at 5'10"-5'11". Back in 1996 No NBA teams wanted Ben Wallace when he listed his height at 6'7". (His real height).
