good thread
-jay won the battle with nas
-although I love it, a lot of 90s rap lyrics were very tangential and pointless
-most underground rap sucks. guys like mf doom and the rest are all overrated. tried to get into it but can't
-very unimpressed by guys like cannibus--dudes who use multi-syllabic words in incessant succession in order to wow their audience. they're just a bunch of thesaurus huggers in mine eyes.
-the production of a song is ten times more important than anything else
-not too inordinate, but reasonable doubt and illmatic are the greatest albums of all time, with RD grabbing the edge

LOL, playtetris, just like in every thread such as this (post your all time favs, post your unordinary opinions etc.) only comes in to argue minor points that OTHERS have made, and carefully avoids going out on any of his OWN limbs. Similar to what deucewallaces does in threads about any discussion outside botany.
Dude makes ONE statement that breeze brewin is in the top 20, and even though that alone is near the top of retarded things people have said in this thread, anyone could chalk that up to just bein a simple "theres just somethin i like about him."
But in terms of offering a list or some things that might cause debate, dude adds nothing else of his own because he doesnt wanna get exposed if it turns out the smart people disagree with him.
This dudes whole contrived image as a "head" is such an affectation he's practically a HOLOGRAM. He's like a shell that looks like it encompasses a certain amount of space, but inside the shell there is nothing. A trojan horse. All his statements and opinions are just so, so awful. I may disagree at times with dudes like L Kizzle or LOJ but at least I can tell they have some taste and are genuine in their opinions.
This fukcin playtetris dude.... my forkin god. Everything is contrived. The most phony and lame, wannabe imitation of a b-boy. Kill yourself dude. All your opinions SUCK. You are like the kid who always gets pushed backward over the dude crouched down behind him and then laughed at.
And yes, i'll post my own thoughts on the topic in a minute here. But playtetris, go to some other forum. Music itself is diminished just by a mere association with you.

Anyway:
In general, OutKast is boring as hell.
Biggie Smalls is easily the most overrated rapper ever. Combination of biting Raekwons don style plus the Bad Boy hype machine is what made him so big.
CNN - War Report is a top 10 album for me.
Nas sucked after Illmatic. Jay Z has always been over rated. Hearing him rhyme is like drinking kool aid with like 5 cups too much sugar.
Memphis Bleek had crazy potential. Trying to cross over and failing doomed him.
Sheek Louch is > Styles P
Common has seriously no talent.
Mystikal is the bomb

CNN - The War Report is IMO a classic (Source gave it 4 mics back in the day, obviously > 4 mics) ... IDK about Top 10 though; maybe Top 25, more like Top 50
Jay Z to a degree is overrated (based off his success alone, then some)
Common has no talent !!!! Yes! OMG so obvious.

Memphis Bleek is doo doo
GZA is one of the all-time greats if you can find production to match his style

you're the most uncultured half-wit on the board. you literally have no knowledge of ANYTHING. all your arguments revolve around whose "team" is doing what in sports. All you're capable of in a discussion is the tired "my team vs your team!" shtick that requires absolutely no brain power.
"Eagles Rule! Clippers suck! Tony Parker better than Rondo yall!"
"umm, gobb? what are your thoughts on ben franklin?"
"dude lived in philly, HE RULES!" :pimp:
You aren't capable of intelligent discussion, all you know how to do is cheer or jeer. That's why you also love BET gossip. You're fooled by phony drama and public figures battling as villains and heroes. You're entertained by the things that are marketed toward the lowest common denomenitor which is exaclty what you are. When you try to go above and beyond that you speak in vague sentence fragments so you're able to crouch into your backtrack stance at a moments notice.

Reasonable Doubt is above average, I feel like that album is immensely overrated. It's like Jay had to have a classic in his discography in order to truly cement his status as a legend or something.
Drake is way better than people give him credit for and so far gone was one of the best mixtapes/albums of 09 hands down.
Boi-1da is going to be a legendary producer.
I feel like Big L/Pun are overrated. People talking about how they could have been goat?:facepalm Come on son.
Underground rappers are usually trash and just because they arent hugely popular doesnt make them underground. There is a third distinction for rappers called indie. Stop being dumbasses, just because someone isnt signed to def jam, universal, sony/columbia, atlantic records, etc. doesnt make him underground.

Here are some of my own opinions on hip hop:
- Eminem sounds almost the same on every song he does now, so though he might still be the most lyrical rapper to grace a mic, he's getting boring to listen to now.
- Kanye West is a decent lyricist but he seems like an annoying douchebag.
- Kobe Bryant shouldn't have ever grabbed the microphone to rap. Just embarrassing.
- Ron Artest's "Champions" song is one of the best songs released in the past few years.
- Mainstream hip hop seems to be getting worse and worse as time progresses.
- Lil Wayne is a garbage lyricist now. He just says things in order to rhyme. Whether or not they make sense makes no difference to him.
- Drake was cool when he first popped into the scene but he's overwelcomed his stay somewhat.
- WTF happened to Terror Squad? More importantly, wtf happened to Remy Ma?
- Fat Joe is still somewhat fat, even though he lost a significant amount of weight.
- I want D12 to release one last album before it's obvious Eminem no longer cares to be a part of the group.
- Big L could've been one of the GOAT had he not been killed.
- The Game is still a notable lyricist from the Westcoast. I hope he succeeds as he continues to grow musically.

Jay-Z's has like 1-3 good songs on most of his albums, rest are meh. He stuck with that formula for a decade and became a legend because he was consistent, not because he was greater then those before him. If he didn't collaborate with the hottest artists at the moment or wasn't married to Beyonce he would have fell off.
And Eminem wouldn't be taken seriously if he was black.

i don't get the obsession with drake and wayne.
i remember wayne when he was with the hot boys and didn't think he was anything, and i still don't.
also, a lot of my peers tend to find a lot of his meteaphors ridiculously clever when i don't think they're that great, and i feel he and drake sometimes rely on said stupid metaphors too heavily.
i like kanye as a producer... i like pharrell too.
on some songs kanye has some good lyrics, but pharrell tends to be horrible throughout.
i like immortal trechnique a lot, but his gloom and doom/conspiracy theorist/negative nancy angle can get tiresome if you listen for it for too long.
sometimes i just like instrumentals better than the songs- tends to be the case for 9th wonder.
speaking of instrumentals, i can listen to nujabes all day.
i like a lot of commons older stuff... i know some of the hate here is trolling, but there's some that i think can be genuine.
there's been a few artists that i didn't know of that i saw featured on some songs, and looked u some of their other stuff and liked it, even though it wasn't hip hop. i looked up barrington levy after hearing bonnie and shyne and found a group sleepy brown recorded with called sleepys theme that i liked a lot i bought their cd for like 6 dollars
:lol
i like some stuff from game, some i despise, got tired of him starting beef with everyone, be it real or sefl promotion, but i still listen to 300 bars and running when i'm on long drives.
i'm ****ING tired of hearing waving flag. k'naan has other songs , and there are also other inspirational songs,
deltron 3030 needs another album.
i like del a lot. he's a weird dude. i like how he raps about offbeat subjects.
i like a lot of andre nickatina;s songs. a lot of them have really bad and cheesy lyrics though.
teh songs i do like though i can listen to all day, it's just a shame that a lot of his better songs are overlooked
i find it interesting to see the songs that get sampled on some songs, and sometimes you see a pattern in the songs being sampled. i noticed a lot of rap songs sampled prior r n b songs, but didn't pay much attention to it until i heard this song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yEuFUqtYDo
after some research, mobb deep used teh same sample
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waPzxY5Wg-g
obviously, its not the first time the same sample is used twice, i was just surprised this sample was used
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtKbxPqqcu0
a chilean band from the 70's isn't exactly a rappers first choice for samples
there was a beat that i heard in 300 bars and running that i recognized here as well...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzNiE3ZUHdk
i could recognize most of the other songs that were sampled were also hip hop, so i figured there was no way he was sampling blige.
then i heard dead presidents and reasonable doubt for the first time, and a garden of peace by lonnie liston smith
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE8nN0vlUVU
sometimes there's somewhat of a background behind it - when i first heard int'l players anthem, i didn't know ugk and three six had already made players anthem, and that was a sample from "i choose you" by willy hutch which is the theme to the mack.
after a while you get an idea of how many songs are samples, which can expose you to other stuff, and i also begin to wonder how many of the producers/rappers actually listen to that kind of stuff or if they're just looking for the most discrete sample.
sometimes though, the thought never crosses your mind that certain rappers would use the samples they do

If Eminem wasn't white, nobody would give a shit about him

If eminem was black he wouldnt be as big as he is today.
i think jay z is annoying as hell
Mike Shinoda from linkin park/fort minor is a top 5 rapper
all of young jeezy and rick ross songs sound the same
Lil wayne is my favorite rappper ,talented as hell, dope lines, sounds good with autotune, and his rock album and new album are pretty good.
Pac and biggie are overrated since they died they became these figures if they were still alive theyd be good but not considerd the ultimate best by 90% of people. Compare them to The Rock and Stone Cold from wwe. If they never left would they be as big as they are today and receive loud ass pops... lol maybe nevermind...

His verse here was better than a lot of today's artists:

surely, I can't be the only one familiar with the classic/near classic/not a classic grades for individual records. An arbitrary label that is supposed to extend beyond personal taste, or maybe that's just my interpretation.

agreed, i've never really repeat played (most of) his music. usually i will listen, say "that was pretty good" and then put something else on. i've listened to god's son and stillmatic a lot more than illmatic too.
Illmatic is just timeless. The more I listen, the better it gets. No other (rap album) has that type of effect to the same extent. There's a reason why it's considered the greatest of all-time.

Nas is the GOAT, nobody comes close to his catalouge, longevity and ability to rip up a track. He's also the greatest storyteller of all time ( along with Ice Cube )
Em is by far the most overrated rapper ever, his catalogue is weak compared to some of the greats and he's corny as ****
Ready to Die is the greatest rap album ever
BIG is the most talented rap artist ever, the only thing he lacks is longevitity and a bigger catalogue which gives Nas the edge

Em is corny; I can see the overrated arguments - but in terms of spitting ability and just straight up raw skills, he's way up there. I agree, his records for the most part are lame, but if and when he wants, no one can really fukz with him.
Illmatic > Ready To Die
Not everyone will have Ready To Die in their Top 5 of all time, but to me it's Top 5, maybe even Top 3.
BIG probaby is/was the most 'talanted' ever. I still say a prime and developed Pun could have surpassed BIG and if given the time could have been the GOAT.

It's best if experienced from beginning to end, but if you're only looking for a taste I'd suggest Back to New York (raw, mediocre classic), Creep, God Is Back, The Daily News. I read this thread and don't know what to believe. Half the people are saying 2Pac is trash and pales in comparison to Biggie, the other half say Biggie doesn't sniff the talent of Pac. I guess It's too easy to say something like, "I prefer 2Pac over Biggie", instead everyone is over-the-top ridiculously extreme with their opinions, not just with these two.
"Biggie and Pac are average" Really, so if you compiled a list of every rapper ever, they'd be right smack dab in the middle?
One thing I'd like to add is that I wish Talib Kweli would quit complaining on Twitter about how hip hop sucks and do it through his music instead. Also, I don't really care about rappers anymore, I look for the production. I've slowly moved over to instrumental artists. Oddisee is the shit.

hip hop is evolving a lot like rock and roll did.
early hip hop artists (Kool Herc, Bambata, Flash etc..) were a lot like Little Richard and Chuck Berry were to rock. Planting the seed for future generations to grow off of.
classsic rock (starting in the late sixties and going to the mid seventies) is akin to the golden era of hip hop (mid 80s till Biggie's death). This was when the music peaked, and future generations will always bump this shit, just like kids today still bump The Beatles, The Who, Hendrix, The Grateful Dead and all the other classic rock favorites.
the bling era (or whatever the f*ck you wanna call it where rappers just talk like retards about all the jewelry they own and the girly drinks they consume) is a lot like the hair metal of the 80s (the dominant pop music of the era).
This era is highlighted by a lack of artistic integrity (as was the parallel era in rock) a focus on appearance and a general apathy from older fans. Kids loved hair metal in the eighties, but people who lived through the classic rock era thought it was pathetic. History shows they were right, just as history will not shine brightly on the same era in hip hop (though a few artists will survive the era and become legendary in the same manner GnR, U2 and Metallica did).
The heavy use of autotune today is also a parallel to rock bands experimenting with synthesizers in the 80s, and if you want to get real technical, techno music is the disco of modern times, and even though some people think techno is hot now, it really peaked in the late nineties.
what is next?
I am excited about Hip Hop soon entering its grunge era (like rock did after hair metal). Some of the new cats are gonna come out and be real grimy (think early Wu, early Treach, Jeru or Das Efx), the music will be raw and real, and hip hop is gonna have a Kurt Cobain and an Eddie Vedder rise to the top and challenge the all time legends.
I also think the downturn in the US economy over the last few years is going to provide the social conditions for people to relate to this fostering an environment that will allow it to blow up.

Canibus really isn't anything special outside of his lyricism, but his actual 'skills' aren't exactly trash either. Dude can spit.
Kanye top ten all-time as an emcee?

Easy E was pretty dope. He had his moments. You mentioned him being an expert at layin' the pipe to broads, but there's speculation he was an expert at takin' it up the doo-doo shoot too.

How is that more corny than any mainstream pop hip hop track?
I actually think the material he brought out originally was innovative.
No hip hop artists talked about stuff like that.
It's no more conry than the excessive money, cash, hoes, guns routine.
Post 2003 ... he kept the same material and THEN it was corny.
And yes MOS DEF has GOAT type potential.

Ice Cube is/was vastly overrated
Eminem has great flow, rhyme schemes and enunciation but his lyrics are rather basic when he's not talking about crazy shit
College Dropout was Kanye's best album with Late Registration as a very very close second. Everything after Graduation sucked.
Wayne probably was the best mainstream rapper from 2005-early 2007. In 2006 he was definitely great.
Comeback Season >>>> So Far Gone
A lot of old school rappers are overrated as far as rapping ability, but some of their songs were still listenable. I could listen to "Rapper's Delight" any day
"N!GGER" was Nas' best album. His beat selection is pedestrian though
The South didn't kill music. NY rappers couldn't make any hot artists when the South started coming up
T.I. has really dropped off. KING was his best work
Little Brother was very underrated. And The Listening is one of the best albums of the last decade. The Minstrel Show was good too but The Listening just felt more soulful and raw. The Minstrel Show, although more commercial and Phonte was at his best (imo), I just listen to The Listening more. Their mixtapes are all great too. Better than most people's albums.
J. Cole is overrated as a lyricist. He has cool subject matter and makes good songs but his similes, punchlines, wordplay, rhyme schemes, cadences are basic. His flow is above average though.
Mac Miller is hot ga-bage
Waka Flocka sucks lyrically, but his songs are fun. And his ad-libs >>> anyone else's

Jay-Z is a horrible promoter. He is good at putting himself on, but he can't/won't do it for others.
That's why Wale went to Maybach Music. You may not like Rick Ross or his music but best believe he will give you more promo than Jay will.
Look at all the talent Jay had at Roc-A-Fella. He did NOTHING with them. The only one that really blew up was Kanye but he was already established as a producer. Beanie was about to get big before he got locked up and Jay abandoned him. He just uses people.
That was Beanie's own fault for gettin locked up he stay in jail I wouldn't put no money in that ***** neither tho..:pimp:

This is a brief construction - I'll impart more "unordinary opinions" when I've got some free time on my hands...
* Phonte has been my favorite artist since the release of Connected. His range as a lyricist + vocalist + song writer all contribute to him being one of the most talented musicians amongst his peers. Although I can't front - I do feel that his Foreign Exchange material is gradually getting worse and worse but could easily be saved if he spit a little more...
* Elzhi is a top 15 MC in the game and is always undeservingly slept on by the masses but anyone who knows Elzhi, knows Elzhi if you know what I mean...
* The hip hop game as a whole is in a much better place then it was a half decade ago and unless your from the dirty, I don't comprehend how you can feel otherwise...
* J. Cole is extremely impressive to me. He's the first up & coming young mainstream artist that I've I've really felt in quite some time. 2 things I've noticed with Cole. You can detect the 2pac influence in his content and style. And its also very apparent that this kid has a passion for his craft and respects it...
* Joe Budden is a basketcase but a beast on the mic. Same could be said for the rest of Slaughterhouse. They may never push a million units, but their lyrical content will never go unnoticed

Oh no doubt brother...
With his dexterous flow, Phonte just represents and exudes everything I've ever loved about the game of hip hop. IMMA BIG FAN of his...
Tetris - Much as I eluded to earlier, although I'm appreciative of his ability as a vocalist, Phonte's best work as a musician will always derive from what he delivers as an MC. BUT with that said, I think he really tries to use his Foreign Exchange projects as a platform to show his lengthy range as an artist. No Rakim?
Then theres no Nas/Raekwon/Ghostface/Jay Z/Eminem etc.
Eminem said Rakim is the reason he even started to rhyme, ditto Raekwon. Rakim is basically the father of all the greatest rappers in history.
No rappers constructed rhymes as intricate and detailed as Rakim until he started doing it.

Yeah man he almost never disappoints. Like 90% of the music on my ipod is something from him, LB or FE.
And you're right, he does do the Foreign Exchange stuff to show his versatility. But also, I think it has to do with a shift he's had in what he wants to do as far as music. In "Tigallo For Dolo" he did talk a little bit about wanting to sing more than rap. I also think that's why LIAB and Authenticity are so different from Connected
Which totally sucks a fat one because I felt Connected was a phenomenal album from top to bottom and although I have enjoyed the follow up albums, I don't feel that either of them have measured up to what him and Nocolay did on the first...
So what's good with this solo project he's working on? Is there a set timeline when its dropping?

Cause the ***** wear a coofie, it don't mean that he bright
Cause you don't understand him, it don't mean that he nice
It just means you don't understand all the bullshit that he write
Don't get me wrong, I like Nas. He's a good rapper and I like his first 3 albums, but there's a certain kind of person who thinks it signals to everyone else how "smart" they are by sucking this guys d*ck.
These kind of Nas "fans" are like pretentious yuppies at a modern art exhibit who talk about how "deep", "brave" or "insightful" something is only to find out that it's actually just something that somebody spilled on the floor that hasn't been cleaned up yet. People who don't actually have a clue and just say what they think they're "supposed" to say or what they think will make them sound impressive.
