Let that Mfer Gundress copy and paste from other forums in his thread. Use this one for "official" discussion of the latest season of HBO's True Blood.
Personally, I thought the fairy world scene at the beginning was a little bit of a stretch, going from this idyllic scene to what resembled a cheesy sci-fi flick from the 60s. But having Sooki lose a year was a clever gimmick imo.
What I like so far:
Bill being the badass king.
Andy addicted to V.
Tara as a lesbian cage fighter.
What I'm not quite digging yet:
The witch thing, although the message from Eddie was kinda cool.
The story with Sam and his brother is getting kinda old. I was hoping he had killed him last season.
Jason and the in-bred panther people, although it was kind of humorous when they locked him in the freezer.

The problem with True Blood now is there are way too many characters and too many storylines going on simultaneously.
Vampires, shapeshifters, fairies, werewolves, now witches......i dunno....i feel they are throwing alot of shit to the wall, but its just too much.......
Yeah it's a distraction because the vampire story(s) is still the most compelling.

It's a little too soon to complain too much. They had so much to re-set up here.
I'm not crazy about the fairy realm at all. And I hope that's all we see of fairy grandaddy Lundberg. The fruit bombs, the old Planet of Apes sets. It was all just too much for me.
Lesbian cagefighter Tara is interesting to me. Especially if she comes back to Bon Temps with a romantic interest in Sookie now. Because as I've said many times, I feel a big ensemble cast works best when they're all tied up together, and Sookie is the hub to the spokes of this show, and it works best the more people that are hovering around her. Tara could really use something to make her interesting after last season where she spent most of her time screeching and being annoying.
I'm sort of into the witch element. I'm not so into Lafayette and Jesus, particularly because Lafayette has become too over the top. But the witches are a nice new element. There has to be something.
Bill's ascension to political heights is very intriguing. Mostly because I've never liked Bill, and to now have a real reason not too may help my viewing experience. And Eric is far more interesting as a suitor. The house buying thing was a gimmick I can live with.
And the thing that makes me most hopefull, is that Jason seems to be back hovering around Sookie, where last year he was a full blown B-story, unrelated to the main narrative. And the witch reporting to Bill makes me think there will be a tie in through Bill to Sookie of Lafayette and the witch coven. As I said, the more tangled up it gets the better.
So far the only real disconnects seem like they're gonna be:
Sam, which is a shame, because I really like his character. His brother living with Hoyt's mother seems like a horrible sidetracking that they're going to feel compelled to dump 10-15 minutes into every week thats gonna feel like a waste of time.
That horribly annoying waitress, with the serial killer baby. God I hope they can keep her to a minumum.
Jessica may be disconnected some as well, but if she's out hunting and is sort of in her vampire puberty, that'll be cool enough for me to stomach as an aside.
I'm nervous. I feel like this show kind of hit a wall somewhere about halfway through season two, and while it's had moments of bouncing back, I'm not positive I can continue going on saying it's good. But I'll settle for entertained, and I'm still hopefull it'll be good.
The jump in year was probably needed for a show that has literally gone almost in it's own real time, where an episode ends and starts the next week at the same instant. So the jump in year allows them to develop the characters some which they really haven't had the chance to do in three seasons. Since season one started to the end of season three it had really been about 6 months.

The Chamber of Commerce broad who's also working on Sookie's mortgage (the kind of statement that makes me wonder what's wrong with me to enjoy this so much), is also smoking hot. She also appears to have something going on with Bill judging by the look he gave her at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Anyway, she was the crime reporter / Trinity's daughter who was nailing the dipshit Irish cop a couple seasons ago on Dexter ... and she's also smoking hot.

Yeah she's intriguing. I liked her thoughts when she and Sookie were signing papers. If she's tight with Bill she must know that Sookie can read her mind.
I hope we see her naked soon.

I'm pretty sure there was nudity, and I know there were some fairly explicit sex scenes with her on that season of Dexter, so I'm guessing it'll happen.

I was thinking the same thing, but the long weekend makes it likely that I'll be out getting drunk Sunday night, which I think is a big part of why they did this advanced release of episode two. This is not the type of show they can afford to have people miss episodes of, because they can lose the viewer pretty quick once they fall out of the loop. Historically, HBO tends to not air their Sunday night stuff on long weekends.
I think the advanced episode of Game of Thrones was also on a long weekend.

Episode II has gotten me all pumped up again.
I hate to admit it, but part of it is that there was a massive amount of nudity and sex in this one. I'd like to think I'm too mature for that, but a big part of the appeal of this show is the base instincts it plays too, without apologizing for it. But to some degree it lost me when it seemed to be shying away from those roots, like Sam's old shapeshifter girlfriend with the meanad, never actually got naked.
Anyway, I figured out the witch gimmick almost immediately when I saw them bring the bird back to life in episode I, but the effect and there ability to use it so quickly, is going to be a great maguffin.
Also, the gimmick of pushing ahead a year will help bring some of the mystery back into the show. I'm convinced another huge part of my immediate interest in season I was due to it being among the more well written serial mystery shows written. And now with the jump in time, they've set up a number of mysteries to go backwards with, like Bill the King, and his relationship with Eric, all of which they begin to flesh out in episode II.
I feel like we need to get a better look at Tara's girl before I'm willing to definitively say she's hotter or not than Sam's shifter Navajo/Mexican (that statement alone is a testament to why this show is both absurd and fantastic), but that chick is a lot hotter than she looked in episode one. Legs are off the charts fantastic. And her face, the dark eyes, the long black hair, and she has an absolutely perfect mouth. And there's also something oddly sexual about her voice. Anyway ... she's awesome. The half asian half white chick is almost exactly my type, so I'll have to see a little more, and Sam's girl, for all her awesomeness, my first impression was that she looked a little older, so we'll see.
Bill's witch spy is no bad consellation prize either. I wish she left the glasses on.

I agree. That's easily the worst subplot that they're working.
I'd also like to see Sookie get back to reading minds. It was one of the most interesting parts about season one, but she can't do it to vampires, and she couldn't read the meanad, so it kind of fell by the wayside the more time she spent around Bill and Eric. She's already started a bit this year, and the only thing that could save the Arlene story is if Sookie starts to get involved. These stories are best when they intersect. Having Sookie run into Jessica, and the idea of Bill somewhat abandoning Jessica has tied that otherwise split story into the main arc and made that more interesting in my eyes as well.

I don't find Lafayette as annoying as you (Arlene is by far my least favorite character), but I totally get what you're saying. And one of the reasons I think Lafayette is weak is because in the books he dies at the end of season one. He's the body in the car that in the show turned out to be Tara's exorcist or whatever you want to call her. But now, you can be sure that anything Lafayette is into, he's been shoehorned into. They have no source material to base his character on, and I feel like sometimes he just doesn't feel like he fits. Although this season the connection of the witch coven to the vampires to me makes him feel like his more in place.

I'm not sure we should be counting theories as spoilers. How can it be a spoiler if you don't even know it to be true or not? At that point it's just open dialogue. Unless you have prior knowledge from reading the books, which I stopped a while ago, and the show is now ahead of me.

Here's a good article on TB season 4's first episode, or just the general camp-y goofiness of the show. It's from Bill Simmon's website Grantland, and I find it to pretty well reflect my affection for the show while still being able to own up to how much I shouldn't like it.
Guess who's back in the vampire-loving, motherblooding house? True Blood! That televisual dreamworld on HBO in which the men are good-looking and the women are good actresses. Where small towns in the South are pansexual oases that look deceptively like backlots in Malibu. Where everything is lit like soft-core pornography and also written like soft-core pornography. Yes, the supernatural soap is back to match Game Of Thrones round for round in gratuitous sexual content.
When we last left Sookie Stackhouse she'd been delivered to an alternate world resembling a Maxfield Parrish painting of the Olive Garden, which turned out to be the fairy (sorry, faerie) realm. If you made it past that last sentence, you probably already watch True Blood. But if not, welcome to True Blood. I'll go gentle on you first-timers. Just kidding. There is no going gentle.
After figuring out that the fairy realm is a matte-painted death trap, re-meeting her long-lost grandfather (Gary Cole, reprising his role from Talladega Nights in a less bastardly key), and generally reacquainting us with the Lil' Abner-meets-Debbie Does Dallas milieu of True Blood, Sookie is finally returned to the mundanity of the real world where, of course, her vampire boyfriend and her other vampire boyfriend await. No sign of her werewolf boyfriend yet. He's probably still at the gym.
Bill and Eric have apparently been waiting with boom boxes on Sookie's steps for 12-plus months in a "Who Can Be The Creepiest Boyfriend?" contest (YOU BOTH WIN). It's funny how what's considered ideal gentlemanly behavior in romance novels so neatly overlaps with what's considered stalking in real life. That's what icks everyone out so much about the Twilight books, but it's also fun to think about how people will tolerate more or less any behavior in someone they're sexually attracted to.
Meanwhile, vampire Jessica, who spent the past season yearning for a normal relationship with Hoyt, is dealing with the reality of what a "normal" hetero-human sexual relationship entails: a big, boring baby who expects her to cook meals for him even though she herself doesn't eat. Hoyt also expects Jessica to stay at home even though she is a horny teenage ginger baby vampire, and when he lets her out for the night at S&M club Fangtasia, bad-girl enabler Pam encourages her to follow her true instincts and kill and screw everything in sight.
In True Blood's universe, a vampire's biggest enemies are monogamy and a sense of humor. Bill is an exile in his community because of his boring husbandly love for Sookie. Everyone's a swinger. Sookie is the ultimate ethical slut. The plot contorts all sorts of ways so she can keep Bill as her no. 1 vampire lover but then also cheat on him with other hot guys for reasons that are super necessary to the plot.
Like X-Men, True Blood is often accused of using mutation (vampirism) as a heavy-handed metaphor for homosexuality. But in both worlds it's more like anything but Ken-and-Barbie/Real Housewives heterosexuality goes, and that's much more similar to the real world than the fictional worlds that are depicted in film most of the time, in which superheroes still date their secretaries. C'mon Iron Man, get on your own level. Date the girl who can blow shit up with her mind.
Sookie is a consummate Mary Sue, the term in fandom for a hypergeneric stand-in through which the author lives out fantasies. Her biggest characteristic is pluckiness and her second-biggest quality is sundresses. Her third-biggest quality is the ability to mind-read, which is what makes her unique and supposedly why she attracts so many supernatural love interests. She embodies the romance-novel heroine, breaking down every man in town with an innate super specialness that is often alluded to and occasionally displayed.
In other "I forgot about this over the summer" plot developments, Jason Stackhouse is now both badged up with the Bon Temps police department and the reticent lovable caretaker of a bushel of orphans straight out of central casting for the Willow Smith Annie reboot. And rather than deal with another round of resolving Tara's victimization in every single plot line they have given her until now, True Blood has allowed her to live the American dream of re-upping and restarting her life as a lesbian cage fighter in New Orleans. Her new fight partner/girlfriend seems, uh, emotionally supportive.
Lafayette is still with his Santeria-doing boyfriend, although he always seems to lead Lafayette toward his darkest impulses and into library covens. Like Omar on The Wire, Lafayette is often excessively praised for being a non-swishy gay character, the sort of backhandedly homophobic comment that reveals an unfortunate truth about its teller. The desire to label people is strongest in those who are sure that their own label will never get them pulled over or run out of town.
The days of being able to "tell" a person's sexuality just by looking at them are over. They never really existed to begin with. This is the utopia that True Blood presents. Bon Temps is a world where it doesn't matter whom you love or how. A fantasy world that we are getting closer to all the time.

He also sprints out of the coven after he's had whatever he's had happen to him. He's definitely still a vampire, but if he has no recollection, he's not going to remember Sookie and may revert to instinct drink her empty. Or at least try to and wind up with another one of Sookie's complete lack of trust issue storylines.

this last episode was good. a lot of crap happened. pretty weak how Bill had to get help to take out the Queen but i guess she would've wrecked him. that witch stuff got sort of interesting too taking on Erik like that, i think they just gave him amnesia. i doubt his memory's coming back anytime soon either. and then whatshisname getting panther power...

I might be mistaken but I thought that vampires couldn't smell.:confusedshrug: The leader of the coven said she wanted to bring a human back from the dead so maybe that was the spell she was using on Erik. Maybe he's partially human now. I'm not sure if that is possible but with this show anything goes.
Oh, and I like the back story with Bill in London in the early 80s. Got to hear his true accent.

The "Eric ... you just drained my fairy god mother!!!" line last night was one of those defining moments of this show. If you can watch that and swallow it with the proper amount of salt (which everyone involved, director, actor, writer, are all intending it to be served up with) then you can enjoy this show thoroughly. If you can't watch that line without rolling your eyes in disgust, then you're not gonna enjoy it.

It took four weeks or whatever, but the show has finally gotten interesting.
I've always liked the Sam storyline, and I'm shocked I didn't see the skinwalker set up. As soon as Sam's hot Indian/Mexican/Horse girlfriend talked about her skinwalker ability, it was clear something was going to come of the "kill a shifter of your own blood" thing. It was too arbitrary a rule to just throw out there. But it seemed it would be Sam and or his brother trying to kill the other. Even at the end of last week when Joelee caught him, it didn't cross my mind Tommy would wind up killing his mother. And at this point, it doesn't seem he's aware of his ability. One shifter side note ... would it be possible for Tommy the Gator to eat his dead parents to hide them himself?
I did see the Jason becoming obsessed with Jessica coming before she even got out of the truck to save him last week. It begins to tie together a couple of the side storylines that have felt so disconnected for a while. Particularly Jason, who hasn't been tied to main story arc for a while.
The witches are interesting because it brings a common enemy, not unlike the meanad did, but hopefully in an easier way. The writing feels a little forced with the witches sometimes. Too much exposition, explaining every little thing, and I think that has a lot to do with shoehorning Lafayette into the story, seeing as he's been dead for about three books now, anything he's prominently tied to you can assume has been written from scratch, through a different minds eye, or eyes really, and relatively quickly. But the historical element of the witches makes them much more interesting than the meanad was for me.
And of course the big thing last night was Sookie falling for Eric, and Bill finding out Eric was there. As I've said many times, the show works best when multiple stories are draping over one another, and they're finally getting Bill/Eric/Sookie tied back together. It'll be interesting to see if they can squeeze Alicede in there too, since they seemed to introduce a completely unrelated storyline for him last night, that seems so disjointed it could serve as a spin off.
Jason's dream about Jessica was awesome.

They actually just mentioned it last week when Bill was hooking up with his great great great granddaughter. In her attempt to tell Bill that it wasn't a problem, she mentions that it's not possible for them to concieve, so they wouldn't have to worry about a mutant kid.
I think Bill mentions it to Sookie too during one of the previous seasons "I'm breaking up with you because you deserve better" routines.
Bill is just an awfull character. He's too lame to make a good badguy, and too much of a douche to make a genuine good guy. And on top of that he's a terrible actor. I watch the show with a cowlick next to me for amount of salt you're required to take things with while watching it, but Bill's hamminess is bad even for the surroundings he's put in.
To me this has been the worst season in terms of the main story. Bill has been nary around Sookie, and Eric being wiped out has taken some of the interest off of his character. It's left the basic vampire-ing ... as it were ... to a Pam character that at her best is a served in small samples, and with the rotting spell, she's not at her best. They're only now getting into the real meat of the Sookie/Vampire story, with the Witches now finally firmly established.
However ... I feel like the side stories are better than usual. Jessica and Jason's tie in has both of them more hooked into the main story, instead feeling like complete tack ons. And maybe I just like Sam, but the Shifter thing with him and Tommy has enough depth built into the Shifter culture thing to make it feel like a full story, as opposed to the flimsily tacked on subplots we usually get (like the evil baby, and even that's not as bad as it first seemed). As usual, Lafayette feels out of place. The Witches got there spell off no problem without him. Again, I feel like it's because they don't have the text to base his story off of, so they sort of have to fly by the seat of there pants with him. Even the Alicede story is somewhat compelling to me, and seems like it will be moreso with him at least showing more interest in Sookie than Bill has.
I've been a little disappointed at the pacing (the episode to episode cliff hanger hasn't worked the way it did in the past), but I do still have high hopes for the season if only because so many of the subplots are tied into the main story (really everyone other than Sam has a vested interest in the Witch or Vampire side of things). And once they get everything tied together, there should be plenty of rediculous chaos, which is what the show thrives on. But they have to get Eric back to at least being intimidating. And Bill needs to put up some sort of fuss about Sookie, otherwise he's just not interesting at all.
How did Bill take on that bald vampire who would have had to have been older than Bill if he was around during the Spanish Inquisition, while Bill is only around 200 years old, American Revolution era.

instead of some crazy ass man beast with bad makeup they simply use real wolves. Its kind of refreshing.

Tara is way more tolerable in these extra roles than crying and being overly emotional in past seasons. show is much better that way. sookie can look so good sometimes and so weak other times. she looked real weak this episode but i think it was her bummy clothes and looked like her face looked fatter. whats up with that? :wtf:

you guys think tara will die or will the vampires save her? i'm sure eric/bill are gonna sense something is wrong with sookie.
Shot in the head may be too much for a vampire fix.

Would it be too much to make her a vampire though? They fully straight up kill you before you get "made". Eric was all ****ed up from battle and couldnt even move. I think his back was broken when Godric came to him. He was dying. And if its like Bill did to Jessica...Godric then finished him by drinking all his blood...and giving him some of his. And he woke up a vampire.
If one of them showed up soon enough...
If being made a vampire heals broken bones and a broken spine and shit...and being stabbed up dying...why not a shot in the head?

Because Tara is dead....each instance you named the human is allowed. Vamp bloods heals their wounds over a period of time. I think there is some kind of process and transfer that takes place when a vampire is draining a humans blood to turn them into a vampire.
If Vamp blood could bring back the dead, Bill wouldve brought back Sookies grandmom a long time ago

They never straight up showed that Tara died. I think she took it to the side of her head, not straight into the brain, so I think she will live, which is quite unfortunate.

Blood gushing everyone, eyes shut. Looks dead to me, much like Debbie was on the floor. Shottie that close? come on
Unless Sookie has powers she is unaware of.

She'll be saved. Otherwise, what is the point of the cliffhanger?
Boy True Blood was really cleaning house last couple episodes:
Sam's Brother - Dead
Wolfpack leader - Dead
Marni The Witch - Dead
Head of American Vampire League - Dead
Debbie The Werewolf - Dead
Lafayette's Boytoy - Dead
Tara the Colored/Negro/Black/African American friend of Sookie - Possibly Dead

But it does. Thats why they say they are dead. Being made...kills you. Then the blood brings you back. Not sure how...but it does. Remember when Bill killed jessica? She was dead as hell. He buried her. If she were not dead...wouldnt being buried alive all night with no air finish her off?
Its 'magic' as bill put it.
Plus looking online I saw a reference to elvis. In the books...a vampire made elvis into a vampire after he found out he died. made him into one hours after he died. Did it at the morgue or something.
And he was dead a long time. Tara just got shot 30 seconds ago and 2 people who can move 500 miles an hour know Sookie is hurt...and they arei n bills house...across a field. Sookie made that run her self in like 2 minutes once. Jason did it in 30-45 seconds to save Jessica.
They are gonna be there like 2 seconds into the next episode. Sookie is gonna tell them to do something. Bill will do his "Dazed and confused" head turning sideways look....
not sure what happens there...but they are gonna be on the spot.
Perhaps enough vampire blood brings you back....asa vampire? And Bill didnt want to save sookies grandma that way? he doesnt like making vampires. He only made jessice because they were gonna **** him up if he didnt.
