View Full Version : How many seasons was Kobe the best player in the league?

I would say he was arguably the best player for seasons, 2005-2010.

I would say of those seasons, he was the best player in 2005-2006, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010. 2006-2007, I would say Tim Duncan was the best player in the league. Kobe was definitely top 3 at the worst that season though.

Post-season play counts a lot for me in these rankings and I think Kobe was the best player in the league for four seasons. 2008-2009 is arguable with LeBron since LeBron was legendary in both regular season and playoffs. I still think Kobe was better that season because he also dominated in both the regular season and the post-season. He wasn't named the 2009 Finals MVP for no reason.

The only seasons I know for sure Kobe was the best in the league was 2007-2008 and 2009-2010. I am positive for the most part Kobe was the best in 2005-2006, but I could see an argument for Wade. I obviously see an argument for LeBron in 2008-2009 as I stated earlier in this post. I don't see any arguments for any player as the best player in the league in 2007-2008 and 2009-2010. Maybe LeBron in 2009-2010, but his mediocre performance and quitting against the Celtics changed that.

He was the best in 06 and 07.

In 08 he was pretty much tied with CP3 and LBJ.

2009 and 2010 he has no case over LeBron. Top 2 or 3 depending on where you place Wade.

Dunno, but he was the best or top 5 the entire decade, while others fell off he was still good making him the best player for the decade. MJ would have been second best in the league if he played during Shaq`s prime years in 99-03.

I think he was the best from 2000-2002, then McGrady had that amazing season in 2003 (though Kobe's performance was arguably better than T-Mac's), & Kobe picked up where he left off in 2005-2009. LeBron was the best player in 2010.

Duncan was the best player in 99, 02, 03.

Not '02. It was still Shaq's league then. Duncan passed him in '03.

Between 00-04 Kobe has no case whatsoever. He wasn't the best player on his team. Alphawolf, I don't care what some (1) article says.. go watch any Laker game from that period and tell me Shaq wasn't the most valuable piece for those teams. Kobe was great, but not as big a threat, or unique a player as Shaq.
Also, during those years Duncan, KG, Shaq, Iverson won MVP's, while Kobe only came in third in '03 and never higher than 5th. He was a top 10 player, even top 5 (depending on the year), but clearly not the best.

04-05 he was stuck on a rebuilding (bad team). Not his fault. had some personal issues as well. Not a great season for the Lakers, or for Kobe (third team). It's not like he lost his skills or whatever, but things just didnt go right. He was third team for a reason and wasn't the best player in the league that year.

05-06 - Arguably Kobe's finest year. Took a bad team to the playoffs, almost single handidly. set all sorts of scoring records as well. He worked with a bad roster, which explains why he only finished 4th in MVP voting (didn't have much team succes). He was at his best as a scorer though. All his other numbers dipped a bit, but he realized what he had to do for the team to be successful.. Pretty much no player has a case of being better than Kobe for that year.. Nash won MVP, but he was never on Kobe's level. Nowitzki wasn't either. IMO Kobe was the best that season.

06-07 - Nowitzki won MVP, Duncan won a championship, LeBron carried his team to the finals. Kobe, again, didnt have much to work with that year. Put up great numbers, but got ousted in the first round again (not his fault, bad roster..). Still for the regular season, Dirk was great.. and LeBron carried a weak squad to the finals (and looked better than Kobe for the season IMO). Kobe has a case for being the best player that year.. but he misses out in my opinion.

07-08 - Kobe won MVP.. it was overdue. He didn't have the same impact that KG had on the C's (although Kobe, at this point, was the better player than KG). I think Kobe was second best that year. LeBron had a great regular season (lol). Kobe came short in the finals, but the Lakers had a great year. Best player that season: between Kobe and LeBron. I'd say LeBron, but it's arguable.

08-09 - Lakers win the title. Kobe finishes second in MVP voting to LeBron, who was crazy good that season. Kobe's team had a better playoff run, but LeBron was the best player in the league.. had a more complete game, carried his entire team (pretty weak roster) and eventhough he came up short in the playoffs (he's known for that, lol) he was a better player.

In terms of skills, nobody topped LeBron after that season. He's a great overall player. Even this season, with the choking and awfull finals, I'd say he was the best player in the league (he just messes up when it matters most..) 90% of the time he was the best player in the L (skill/talent wise).

Also, for this season (playoffs included) Nowitzki's great run has to be taken into account. Rose had a great regular season as well. Durant also. Kobe was great.. but some players have overtaken him

Kobe ranks high for this decade because he was a factor pretty much every year. Not the best player though, except for one or two seasons (3 tops).

There is a difference between the 'best' player and the player that has the 'best production'

If we are solely using the marker of 'best' player, it could be argued that Kobe was the 'best' from 2003-2010, even if his production was hindered by form or situation.

Comparing it to other sports, between 2003+2004 Tiger Woods was still the 'best' in the world at golf, even if he was majorless, going through swing changes and usurped at number 1 in the rankings.

Brian Lara was the best batsman in cricket for a long period, and he played on some awful teams, and ran into bad form, as is said 'Class is permanent, form is temporary.'

If Real Madrid had won La Liga by a point, does that make Ronaldo better than Messi? In facets yes, but overall as a player no.

Going by production Kobe would be 2005-6 and 2007-8 only in my book, with 2006-7 2008-10 and 2002-3 being up there as well but being bettered by the likes of Duncan and James.

2-3 yrs at the most. 2006-2008. 2 years is more accurate. 2007 & 2008.

2009-2010. LBJ was clearly the best player in the NBA

2009-2010. Wade was clearly the best SG in the NBA. Kobe was 2nd to Wade.

Kobe's best is 2007 & 2008 & he did win the NBA MVP there.

Wade has surpassed kobe in 2009 & 2010 clearly
Lebron was clearly much better player than Kobe in back-2-back MVP years with Cavs

There is no arguement there.

I think Kobe has been the best player in the league for at least 6-7 seasons, team results/stats might say otherwise year to year, but if we are just talking about in terms of overall basketball talent ...Kobe imo has been that guy, its just not the huge gap, that people are looking for

It's hard to take someone that thinks LeBron was better than Kobe in 2008 seriously. 2009 and 2010? I get that although 2010 was more likely Kobe than LeBron.

Going by production Kobe would be 2005-6 and 2007-8 only in my book, with 2006-7 2008-10 and 2002-3 being up there as well but being bettered by the likes of Duncan and James.

06-08

I agree to an extent.

Although it was never clear cut.

I personally think Wade was better in 06....and a good argument can be made for Duncan as well. I just can't give Kobe "best player in game" status after the Suns series while Wade was a beast in the playoffs....and while Duncan did his usual in the playoffs:

26/11/3 on 57% fg 63% TS....and was one Dirk clutch game 7 away from probably winning another title. The spurs won 63 games that year as well. The 06 Spurs/Duncan seem to be really under-rated here.

Hard to argue with Duncan or Lebron for 07 as well. This was Duncan's last elite year and he was still damn good. I'd probably take what Duncan provided over Kobe in 07, but its close.

Kobe gets the nod (over Lebron) for 08 though because he was so good in the playoffs until the finals.

he played well overall for sure. no doubt.

utter domination? hardly.....revisionist history at its finest right there. the suns were very poor defensively as well.

Kobe was really bad in game 1. 7-21 22 points
Kobe was really good in game 2. 12-24 29 points
Kobe was bad in game 3. 6-18 17 points
Kobe was really good in game 4. 9-14 24 points
Kobe was great in games 5 and 6 (he did airball the series winner in game 6). 10-17 29 points /// 20-35 50 points
Kobe was horrible in game 7. 8-16 24 points (quit in 2nd half)

He ended up with 28/6/5 on solid efficiency across the board. But his game 7 and his inability to close game 6 hurts him. Especially if this is a best player in the game discussion with guys like Wade and Duncan beasting.

I actually think this is revisionist history, Too this date, I think the first 6 games of this series were some of Kobe's best games ever in the playoffs. It went far beyond stats, he controlled all those games with his presence on the floor.

It wasn't his ability to close game 6...that was a team effort. They had the game closed until some bs happened. And even though Phx was not great defensively, Kobe going off scoring WOULD HAVE BEEN A HORRIBLE IDEA. If Kobe averaged 35 a game then the series is over in 5. But, someone like you would have prob ranked him higher though.

At times? Of course.

I'd have to re watch some of the games, but I remember Kobe being really bad in game 1 and it was really close.

And its hard to excuse the 2nd half of game 7. Its one thing not to shoot, but Kobe went "lebron" and just stopped doing anything. He didn't rebound or create or defend in that game.

I think people also forget that Lamar Odom was an absolute beast that series as well.

It doesn't "claim" anything. It just says they were more productive based on the measures it uses.

You really need to open up your mind. Oh, and by the way...its just a stat that measures production. Here are the raw numbers for Duncan in 02 and 03 in the playoffs:

02 - 28 points 14 boards 5 assists
03 - 25 points 15 boards 5 assists

You make it sound like its absurd to say that Duncan in 02 produced similarly to what he did in 03. Its just a stat. Its needs context. Its not designed to tell you who the best player was...etc.

You would never solely use ppg to determine the best player. Why would it make sense to use solely PER?

I'd rather using EFF first of all. Secondly, in 2002 playoffs, Duncan wasn't efficient at all.

I didn't meant to claim Duncan was awful in 2002&2006. But 2003 playoffs Duncan's best playoffs.

2002 Playoffs PER; 31.8
2006 Playoffs PER; 30.4
2003 Playoffs PER; 28.4
2007 Playoffs PER; 27.4

Duncan's 2003 Playoffs, really better than 2007 Playoffs and look at how close their PER. Duncan shot higher fg in 2003, scored more points, averaged more rebounds/asissts/blocks and PER claims "the production" was really close...

PER and TS% too subjective IMO.

Damb a5s kobe'tard dont understand one simple fact:

Kobe just didnt distance himself enough to claim he is clearly the best.

MJ did that to Drexler & 'Nique.

Hakeem did that to all the other '90s centers.

Shaq did that by sheer dominance in '99-'04. I mean, no one was more dominant during that time frame.

Kobe is one of the best but subjective. paul, McGrady, Iverson, Lebron & Wade all in conversation with Kobe & rightly so.

I like to give 2008 yr to Kobe cuz of MVP win. 2007 & 2008 may have been kobe's best years since 2002-2003.

I agree. I prefer all the raw numbers. PER and TS are fine if you can't post the raw numbers.

What I like about PER is that it adjusts for how the game was played that year compared to the competition and pace....etc. Its a great tool for comparing across eras. That is really its value.

I just think PER is valuable because it adjusts for a lot of things the raw numbers don't.

05-06, 06-07, 07-08, with countless other seasons where he was easily top 3 and the best player at his position. Kobe IMO was the absolute best player in the league for a three year stretch.

2006, 2007, and 2008.

He was top three player in 2003, 2009, and 2010.

He was a top five player in 2001, 2002, and 2004.

i can see arguably the best for those years. i just don't see "absolute" best.

This is why I pay attention to PER. But to me, PER doesn't mean much. In general, I prefer the raw numbers also.

Yea that sounds about right. Although I don't really agree with the concept of the "absolute best player in the league" for a number of reasons, one of which is position. How can you argue that Duncan is better than Kobe or Dwight is better than CP3? They all bring different things to the table. Like Jordan said there is no greatest player there is just being in the breathe with the greatest players in the league, and Kobe has been in that breathe ever since 02 arguably 01.

Naturally. You don't like Kobe Bryant, and I am a fan of his ... admittedly.

If you want to throw arguable in there, that's fine.

During that time frame most of his peers, coaches, league execs would probably emphatically lean towards him being the best player in the game though.

IMO here are the best performers by Regular Season (not necessarily the most valuables, just the best performers):
00: Shaq
01: Shaq
02: Duncan
03: T-Mac
04: KG
05: Nash
06: Kobe
07: Kobe
08: CP3
09: Wade
10: LeBron
11: Nowitzki

IMO here are the best performers by Play-Offs:
00: Shaq
01: Kobe
02: Shaq
03: Duncan
04: KG
05: Nash
06: Wade
07: Duncan
08: Kobe
09: Kobe
10: Kobe
11: Nowitzki

It's kinda hard to mix regular season and playoff performances sometimes, but here's my overall choices:
00: Shaq
01: Shaq
02: Shaq
03: TD
04: KG
05: Nash
06: Kobe
07: Kobe
08: CP3
09: Kobe
10: Kobe
11: Nowitzki

----
Here are a few things that i should note:
- First and foremost: In 2001 Playoffs, Shaq outplayed Kobe when Lakers played Blazers, and Sixers. Neither of these teams had any shot at defeating LA. Kobe outplayed Shaq against Kings, and Spurs. These were the 3rd and 2nd best teams in the league respectively (Spurs even had HCA). While Shaq played great against these two teams as well, Kobe was legendary. Sure Shaq has a case for being the best in PO's as well. But those who think Kobe doesn't have a case are indeed the ones who are too young to have watched those games when they happened. It wasn't just one article who was calling Kobe the best, but rather a huge group of fans, media, coaches, and players (including Shaq himself).

- I'm really having a hard time understanding why would anyone that have Duncan as #1 for 07, b*tch about Kobe in 09, or 10. If anything Duncan had a cakewalk in 07, unlike Kobe, who was legendary in both playoffs.

- Why in the world would someone place LeBron at #1 for 2007. (bar his rookie season) He had his career lows in rpg, apg, ft%, 3p%, and his worst RS overall. Also his playoffs numbers were 25ppg/41%, and his Finals series were worse than Kobe 04.

Well, it really doesn't have to do with liking him. I just think what a player like Duncan provides his more valuable. Because I think Duncan was a better overall player, I'm inclined to say Duncan was better in some of the years we are discussing.

Its not like I'm saying Kobe wasn't an elite player or something. I just would prefer Duncan. And I don't think its crazy to say Wade or Duncan was the best player in 06.

Which is why I have issue with someone saying "absolute"

I combine both regular season success and playoff runs, but playoffs weigh much more than the regular season to me. Tim Duncan was the best in 2007 to me though with Kobe being 2nd and LeBron, Dirk, or Nash being 3rd.

That looks very accurate for the most part. :applause:

2006, 2007 and 2008. You could argue Wade for 2006, Duncan for 2007 and Lebron or CP3 for 2008 but I'd take Kobe those three years. Lebron in 2009 and 2010 was better than Kobe ever was IMO, and this year Kobe probably wasn't a top 5 player.

You clearly don't remember Kobe's 08 cast if you think that is true. Gasol was really the only player that was good, Odom was still immature and stupid then, Bynum was injured for the playoffs, and the rest were a bunch of scrubs who were soft jump shooters.

And like Odinn said, post-season success. Kobe destroyed the Spurs in 5 while Chris Paul and the Hornets got eliminated by the Spurs in 7.

29/6/4 with 53% shooting was his numbers against the Spurs that series.

GTFO Kobe wasn't even all nba first team in 01. The Lakers rode Shaq's huge shoulders and elbows to a three peat. Kobe was a great player after 01, but he was not the best. The whole world knew Kobe was the second option to Shaq. All of a sudden Kobe was the best early in the decade...lol

07 Duncan was the best player in the league. 06 Kobe was chucking. 05 Kobe sucked.

Yup, with an honorable mention to Lebron. I'd have rather had Dirk in 06 and maybe 07 (crazy how easy it is to forget him, but he scored at almost the same volume as Kobe while doing it with much greater efficiency) and Garnett or Duncan in 05. Kobe's been in the top three picture longer than just about anyone in the post-MJ era, but there's always or almost always been someone better than him.

a series or 2 dont count until you lead the team in NBA Finals itself. Its a different kind of pressure alltogether.

Once kobe got to finals, Kobe clearly rode Shaq as a sidekick.

(this crap argument reminds me of 1993 EC Finals vs Knicks & 1998 EC Finals vs Pacers when Pippen had terrific all around series. When it counted, MJ took over in the finals)

Why didnt kobe lead in the 2001 NBA finals since he was so hot in the playoffs.

BECAUSE HE CANNOT

Had he tried, The result would've been same as 2004 NBA Finals.

2001 finals, Shaq was a safer, better, much more dominant bet for Kobe & lakers to win it all.

so kobe decided to become a full sidekick & ride shaq like last year (2000).

This is the truth.
