View Full Version : Ok am I missing out on this show? Curb your Enthusiasm

I've never watched it before until today at the barbershop. I didnt watch the whole episode, came in when it was halfway done. It actually had me cracking up. Usually I see the show when surfing channels and click away. Never gave it a chance, it looked stupid without me knowing what it was about.

So am I missing out or is this show ok? Hit and miss? I really dont hear many talk about the show and it seems to have been on cable for awhile. Usually popular shows get talked about. Or maybe I'm out of the loop. Curious before I go to On Demand and watch episodes. Dont want to waste my time, rather argue on ISH instead :lol (joke)

start with season 3, it really picks up then. season 1 and 2 are good but they are funnier once you are into the show. a few of my friends started at season 1 and didn't get into it, but once they watched the later seasons they kept watching.

I'm watching an episode not sure what season (think 8, damn thats alot). But it starts off with him on the couch with his girlfriend (or wife?) and he argues about her leaving a ring on the wood table. Then accuses her of doing it at some party where he was blamed for leaving a ring on the table.

But while thats funny what has me dying is he is eating dinner with 2 couples. A guy talks about going to London on a business trip then Larry asks the guys wife "Are you going?" and she says no. He says stuff and convinces her to go meanwhile the guy is pissed giving Larry the staredown. Then tells his wife its cold, foggy and lots of gangs are there. She says I never go anywhere with you, I'm going its final.

It's really funny. If you like Seinfeld, or can at least relate a little bit to the humor, you'll like Curb Your Enthusiasm. But it goes further than Seinfeld. He acts super Jew and it's hilarious. He might get on your nerves once in a while though, b/c he's so neurotic, but that's the bulk of the humor.

I was the same way. I could never really get into Seinfeld, yet Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of my top three favorite shows of the past ten years or so. I'll admit that after watching Curb for long enough, I've developed a newfound appreciation for Seinfeld, but not to the point where I have to watch it whenever it's on.

Also, Leon was related to a family Larry and his wife adopted a few seasons ago after they were displaced by a hurricane. Leon wasn't displaced, he lived in LA at the time, he just sort of moved himself in. And when that family left Larry after a dispute, Leon stuck around anyway.

The one last season with Wendy Wheelchair is absolutely brilliant.

The odd thing is that Larry is such a vindictive prick, you really shouldn't like him, but somehow he remains likable.

Leon is funny, but the whole gimmick of taking him in was a lot to swallow for me. I like him and all, but for me it marked a slight change in the show. And it seems to be drifting further with Cheryl gone now. The show went to these absurd places in terms of social awdwardness, but it could ground itself on Larry's relationship with Cheryl.

I also highly recommend the Christmas episode where Cheryl's family comes, and Larry hires the manger group for his front yard.
Or when Cheryl's aunt dies and Larry writes the eulogy.

I also very much enjoy the odd cameo's, weather it's someone playing themself, like Ted Danson, or the even odder ones, like the fact that the Family Ties dad, Micheal Gross, was Larry's dermitologist last Sunday.

Just overall a great tv experience.

this guy is a douche ^^ trolling for kicks ... don't pay attention
the show is GOLD. Everyday things go on but hilariously and Larry David is the biggest A-Hole just being himself.. Larry is the guy behind Seinfeld and Curb is actually better bro.. really ..

Larry david and the hipsters was his fabricated band as he was convincing the head of the kidney consortium who is an orthodox jew, to move richard lewis up the donor list so he doesnt have to lose his. According to larry, he left the band and they become a big hit known only as The Hipsters.

i think my favourite part of that whole season was how much of a pr*ck Larry wrote Jason to be, in real life. he was a literal d*uchebag in every sense of the word, culminating to the point where he was actively pursuing (read: stealing) Larry's ex-wife.

"acting without acting".... "but it's still acting". lol

"it's pretty thin, eh? pretty thin for a book. seems more like a pamphlet than a book."

too good. i agree with some other posts in this thread though, something about this season has been slightly disappointing to me. the writing is still really good but the plots have gotten zanier, it seems. or maybe that happened a few seasons ago and i just stuck with it because there aren't any other shows on tv like it.

though i was definitely falling over laughing at the lawyer interjection at the buffet restaurant in the first episode this season. Catz... lol

Yeah, that's sort of my point. The show always had moments, but it was always able to bounce back to the fact that Cheryl love Larry in spite of his Larry-ness.
I really felt like the moment it twisted was when Cheryl agreed to take in Leon and Vivica Fox. Not only was it completely out there, but it disconnected Cheryl from being the base point of the show. Remember it was her idea to help foster a family after Katrina. And as much as I love Leon, they came in almost as cartoon characters. Just completely over the top. They almost feel like they're referencial, almost like Larry included them in a kind of tongue in cheek sort of jab at the typical sitcom. Look at the zany addition we've added, kind of a thing.

Again, Leon has paid off more than his due. It just hasn't quite felt the same since then.

And this season so far seems to be missing that overhead story arch. Weather it's been Larry getting the HBO comeback special, joining a Mel Brooks production, opening a resturant with Ted Dansen ... most of the seasons have one sort of theme that gives it some consistency from episode to episode. So far this just hasn't had one.

Still the only show on TV at the moment that I lay in bed and literally laugh out loud all alone while it's happening.

One of the best episodes was when Cheryl felt uncomfortable with the maid not wearing a bra.So Larry offers to buy her one. That ish was hilarious.

Or the one where him and his dad are all excited bcuz a survivors gonna be at a dinner party they're attending. And it turns out to be Colby from the show Survivor instead of a real holocaust survivor.lol

My buddy got me into this show in season 2 and I havent missed an episode since.

One of the greatest shows ever. Larry David simply rules.

It's top-5 for me, easily.

Up there with Seinfeld (#1), The Wire, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Granted, I'm a Jewish American, so I may be a bit biased, the humor I totally relate to and get. LD reminds me of my father big time.

And this season so far seems to be missing that overhead story arch.
definitely. i like the returning 'villains' too, David Schwimmer in season 4, Ted Danson in a few seasons, Jason Alexander last year, etc. so far there hasn't been one this season. though i think i missed one of the episodes, probably the third.

i was actually thinking that an amazing direction for the season, to coincide with the return to NY, would have been a return to stand-up. that was the theme of the pilot, but now that he's an established character in the minds of the fanbase, sending him right back to where it all started, even further back than Seinfeld, feels like a cool idea.

the series will probably end soon though. knowing Larry's mind, the end of season 8 is going to trigger quitting Seinfeld in his memory, which will probably snowball into serious consideration of ending the show. then maybe he'll do 1-2 more, but i highly doubt it goes past 10 seasons. he's too paranoid and insecure to keep pushing the envelop that far. lol

Here's a good QnA from Bill Simmons' recent mailbag on Curb. I don't actually agree with it entirely, but it's still a good read.
And it appears that Ricky Gervais has stepped into the "villain" role, after four episodes or so that seemed pretty isolated. And NY will somehow hold the larger story arch I'm sure.

I gotta catch tonights episode on replay. I'm about caught up on all the seasons of Curb. Black dude is hilarious. I wonder if he talks like that in real life.

That gay kid was hilarious. Every line he said had me cracking up. The present for Suzy was too funny.

Everything Larry does is pointing out some social inconsistency.

I've had conversations with people many times about telling if a kid is gay. In fact, even recently, this summer, I started coaching pop warner football, and there are two older brothers who come to our practices, and I'm absolutely convinced they're gay, or "pre-gay" as Larry put it, and I've had the exact dialogue Larry had with Susy. At that age, he's probably not attracted to anyone, so how can he be gay, but he's obviously gay.
