We all know Vince Carter is the best dunker of the 2000s. That's not even debatable, but who's the second best dunker of the 2000s?

I'll go with Kobe.

Kobe? Hell no. It's LeBron for sure.

Does 2010 count?
Coz for the 2 months blake was dunking in the first part of last season was like nothing i've ever seen.

But yeah, it's Lebron

EDIT: Yes, J-rich certainly is in the conversation

lol really? Lebron "I do the same dunk every time" James? :oldlol:

Kobe can't jump as high as Lebron, but he definitely has more style and creativity.

As a dunker, Kobe >>>> Lebron

It's Jason Richardson. Actually I can argue about he was a better dunker than Vinsanity. If there was a slam-dunk contest between, probably J-Rich would win it IMO.

In game dunker? I'd say Wade. I really like his style.

Yup, as far as in game dunks go. Wade's 08-09 season had so many insane facials (Pause). Even more crazy is that was after being out a season with injury

Vince Carter wins the Dunk Contest part.... even tho he participated only once that contest was HISTORIC.... best dunkcontest performance ever....

Vince Carter + Lebron James win the INGAME part.........

with other words:

1. Vince Carter
2. Lebron James

ANYBODY ELSE AFTER THEM....

Pauk you're on crack. Kobe is 10 times more creative than Lebron. Lebron does the same stupid Tomahawk every time. Kobe has done 360's in games, reverse flushes over defenders baseline, tons of classic facials like on Howard, Ben Wallace etc.

I'd say Kobe is EASILY the 2nd best dunker of the 2000-2010 period followed by Jason Richardson.

What the hell has creativity INGAME got anything to do with best dunker??
Lebron has straight yammed on dudes consistently throughout the course of his career (aside from this year of course SMDH).

Lebron has had big time posterizations in big time playoff games.
See Sheed 07 and KG 08. Im pretty sure kobe aint had any posterizations of that kind of magnitude in his career.

Edit:
Amare Stoudemire

posterizations > 360s, flair, tomahawks, windmills, whatever

And a contender emerges. Amare completely slipped my mind

You ****ing kidding me? Kobe dunked on Dwight Howard, prime Yao, prime KG, Ben Wallace, Okafor, etc.

And Kobe usually adds flare to his dunks. Windmill, 360, reverse, double pump, etc. The only dunks Lebron ever does are tomahawks.

GiveItToBurrito
08-04-2011, 06:44 PM
Factoring in game dunks, the contest, and posters, I'm going with Amare followed by Lebron and Dwight Howard. Nate Robinson is the most overrated, both as far as the dunk contest and the games.

:oldlol: @ anyone who said LeBron.

The answer is either JRich or Kobe.

Exactly. Lebron's plain Tomahawk 99 out of 100 times isn't flying with me. In the streets when we talk about best dunker it's the most creative, dunking wiz. It's not based on volume of dunks. Kobe dunks less than Lebron but he's got such smooth dunks.

:oldlol: @ anyone who said LeBron.

I'm fine with Kobe as an answer, but Richardson wasn't actually that incredible as an in-game dunker IMO due to being a pretty average slasher and always having to jump off of two feet. Lebron's dunks aren't that pretty, but he can go over or through just about anyone.

J-Rich's off the backboard then between the legs and the one he beat Desmond Mason with in the finals (bounce from the side, forgot what year) are two of the nicest dunks I've ever seen. The latter might just be my favorite dunk contest dunk ever.

Most have been mentioned already. I'll throw out Kmart and Stro' Swift.

What the hell has creativity INGAME got anything to do with best dunker??
The whole reason Vince Carter is the best is BECAUSE of his creativity.. go look up VC's vert and wingspan.. there's been guys with the same or better specs. But no one has done the same moves as him~wrist through the rim, cocking it back like 4 feet, 360 reverses, insane finishes on alley oops, through the legs, etc. The reason Vince is the best is because he put on a show the best.. which is pretty much all creativity.

And I'd say Pheonix Amare.

Lebron isn't even close to being on Vince Carter's level in terms of in-game dunks. Vince Carter had it all. Tomahawk, windmill, 360, 360 windmill, reverse, reverse double pump, statue of liberty, and he could jump just as high as Lebron.

I don't think Lebron is even in my top 5 dunkers for the 2000s. He has the vertical leap, but he does the same damn dunk every time, and he doesn't even have as many poster dunks as Kobe or Amare.

Lebron had superior leaping ability too. He got way higher on his dunks.

Kobe pretty easily IMO. You can put J-Rich there for the contest dunks but from 2000-2005 Kobe was better than LeBron and Wade from 2004-now.

He had posters, tomahawks, windmills, reverse windmills, 180's, 360's, 180's in traffic(vs Jazz), double pump reverses, 180 alleys, reverse alleys, off the backboard to himself, you name it. Going baseline I don't know if anyone could touch him.

Lebron on Damon Jones
Lebron on Sheed
Lebron on Delonte

So many posters..

With such power.

Plus he has done a variety of dunks, reverses, windmills, between the legs...

Kobe's posters are way more impressive.

Kobe on Dwight
Kobe on prime KG
Kobe on Dirk
Kobe on Yao
Old man Kobe on Okafor
Kobe on Ben Wallace
Kobe on Nash

If this is about ingame dunking it should be one of these guys

Amare
Lebron
Wade
Carter

Kobe has the smoother dunks but didn't dunk as often as those guys.

Amar'e used to be unreal. Basically whenever he was in the paint there was a chance he would get the ball and immediately dunk over whoever was in his way. He still gets a lot of posters because he's more of a slasher now.

Blake Griffin, Wade, and Lebron are also pretty nasty in-game dunkers

lol really? Lebron "I do the same dunk every time" James? :oldlol:

Kobe can't jump as high as Lebron, but he definitely has more style and creativity.

As a dunker, Kobe >>>> Lebron
I would say Kobe has way more style as a dunker, more style overall actually, but he just doesn't get up above the rim like LeBron. With LeBron's size advantage and superior vertical, I gotta give it to him. Seeing this guy go eye level with ease is really something. That all star dunk he alley ooped to himself is one of the nastiest dunks I've ever seen.

Depends.. measuring by both quantity over quality, I'd take Shaq over Vince Carter as the top dunker of the decade.
He has way more dunks and some vicious facials as well. Vince has the coolest dunk reel of all time IMO, but Shaq (due to his height, power, athleticism) was the best dunker of the decade if you ask me.

Kobe does not have a good vertical.
End thread.

Seriously, the guy is aggressive but he cannot really get up..and hence his dunks are NEVER smooth! Because he has to use a lot of upper body to force his dunks in (see all his baseline reverses).

Also he has small hands. Small hands + low vert = so so dunker.

As for my answer to the question... that's a tough one. Strictly in-game? I'm glad to see Stro getting some nominations, but I'm not sure if he's the right answer. He did some crazy sh!t over the course of the decade, but due to his lack of assertiveness/playing time, he wasn't dunking with the regularity of a lot of these other guys. I'm not sure if that should count against him or not. Other guys that could be put in the same category are Gerald Green, Darius Miles, Jamario Moon, etc... sick dunkers, but they didn't see the court much/had their NBA careers cut short.

A guy who I think should be in the conversation that I don't think has been mentioned yet is Ricky Davis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-gNzkfSF_c). He probably isn't #2, but he deserves a shout-out.

If I'm taking in-game and contest dunks into consideration, I think I'll take Jason Richardson. If this is just in-game stuff... I might have to go with Amare Stoudemire. The things he was doing before his injury were... ridiculous... and he can still throw down with the best of them.

Kobe has had so many memorable dunks that I can't see putting J-Rich over him. All bball fans know Kobe's baseline windmill series and the behind the back into the reverse against the Nuggets, the dunk on Nash. Then you add in all the facials! Kobe was a better in game dunker than J-Rich.

Kobe is super athletic but his dunks are simply not as graceful or co-ordinated as Jordan, T-Mac, Wade and Lebron. He looks all lanky half the time with arms and legs flailing everywhere.
Kobe would still be a top 5 dunker of the 2000's despite my obvious distaste for his dunking style.

There's much debate on who is in-game best and contest best. The biggest difference between them would be that there is usually someone guarding the dunker. Thus, you also need to include in the criteria things of situation such as how the player attacks the basket, how he takes off the floor, how he adjusts in mid-air, and how he finishes it.

I think Kobe's dunks shine more during the game mainly because he just knows how to get the basket and finish it over the defenders. So his dunks usually follow after a certain dribble moves and the transition to the dunk where he shows his instinctive decision making of either overpowering the defender or adjusting his body in mid-air to get around the defender or the combination of both. It's not really about whether he did a 360 or reverse or whatever. You see Kobe doing a normal one-hand jam over others and it looks different every time because of the variance in the transition from dribbling to taking off the floor to mid-air adjustment to finishing it. His dunks are great because his moves show incredible flexibility according to the situation and pulls the right moves that just look right therefore beautiful.

As for Vince's in-game dunks, his ball handling is not so good as Kobe and he just is a different character in terms of a basketball player. Compared to Kobe, he lacks finess and you can see that in every aspect of basketball when compared to Kobe. But he has more hop and power which usually make up much of the overall impact of a dunk. I remember him giving such impact with his hop ability and mid-air adjustment that make people go
His specialty in dunk were incredible hop and body control and the unseen combination of power and finess.

I used to love Amare in PHX particularly when he was in the playoffs dunking against the Warriors. Foyle was getting dunked on like there was no tomorrow. The level of posterization was a different one for his case simply because he was a big guy dunking on another big guy and he literally dunked OVER. I miss him back in the days..

after vince i would have to go with kobe.... simply because he has a great balance of quality and quantity, his has tons of memorable IN GAME dunks. #8 kobe was throwing down nasty dunks nightly. I have t mac and amare right behind him. I think d wade is a better dunker than lebron imo i like his style more lebron is more speed and power but surprisingly doesn't have much variety to his dunk and doesn't dunk on people as often as u think he would.

Oh yeah and cant forget josh smith also nasty left handed dunks all day

for a dunk contest gotta say J-Rich

for in games, i would say either prime T-Mac or LeBron. Wade and Amare are close as well.

Of course a lot folks are going with Kobe because of his quantity of dunk footage. Glad to see some less known dunkers like Ricky Davis, Desmond Mason, Josh Smith, and Richard Jefferson get some mentions. Dem boys was nasty too.
