Bailey said the girl was then "pounded by 15 riot shields". He said that the police "launched into her with startling force using both batons and shields. She went down on the floor but once she managed to get up she was hit again before being half-dragged away by her friend."

He added: "After she was removed there were a few minutes of peace and then lots of glass bottles started being thrown, we could hear them."

Bailey had been attending an event at the church, which he said is opposite the police station in Tottenham.

"I have never been so scared and intrigued," he said. "On the way out we were mere streets away from the mass fire, it was like 25 meters high and seemed to be like a mile wide."

7.35pm: Initial ballistics tests on the bullet that lodged in a police officer's radio when Mark Duggan died on Thursday night show it was a police issue bullet, the Guardian understands.

The Guardian's crime correspondent, Sandra Laville, reports:


The revelation will fuel the fury in Tottenham about the killing of Mark Duggan by armed officers.

It also undermines suggestions that there was an exchange of fire between Duggan and the police before he died.

The bullet which was found lodged in the radio of one of the officers at the scene is still undergoing forensic tests. But reliable sources have said the first ballistics examinations suggested it was a police issue bullet.

These are very distinct as the Metropolitan Police uses dum dum type hollowed out bullets designed not to pass through an object.

The early suggestion from the IPCC was that the Met officers had returned fire after someone in the minicab opened fire. But the result of the ballistics early test suggests both shots fired came from the police.

London (CNN) -- Police in London said they were reviewing closed-circult television footage in an attempt to identify looters.

Police arrested more than 100 people Sunday night and early Monday in connection with violence that erupted as riots Saturday night in the city's Tottenham neighborhood and continued in isolated outbreaks elsewhere in the city on Sunday.

The arrests were in addition to 61 others made Saturday night and Sunday morning.

16 people were charged, and at least 17 people have been released on bail, police said.

Early Monday, a "fast moving vehicle" struck officers making arrests for looting, police said.

Three police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, a Metropolitan Police news release said.

In all, 35 police officers have been injured since the violence broke out.







Saturday's riots were spurred by the shooting death Thursday of Mark Duggan as he was seated inside a cab.

Duggan was fatally shot after police had stopped the cab during an attempted arrest, the Independent Police Complaints Commission said. The commission divulged neither who shot the 29-year-old, nor why police had stopped the cab.

The man's family and friends, who have blamed police for the death, gathered outside the Tottenham police station Saturday night to protest.

What had begun as a peaceful protest soon devolved into riots as demonstrators tossed petrol bombs, looted stores and burned police cars.

They pelted officers with bottles and bricks as riot police charged at the crowd and blocked streets. A double-decker bus and buildings were set ablaze.

A British police watchdog group said evidence from Thursday's shooting scene, including a nonpolice firearm, was to undergo forensic testing.

Rachel Cerfontyne of the police complaints commission said that, while the shooting remained under investigation,

"speculation that Mark Duggan was 'assassinated' in an execution-style involving a number of shots to the head are categorically untrue."

Hanstock, the police commander, called Duggan's death "extremely regrettable."

"It is absolutely tragic that someone has died, but that does not give a criminal minority the right to destroy businesses" and "steal from their local community," he said.

London riots: Violence erupts for third day


Riot police have again been deployed to the streets of London as violence broke out for a third day running.

Officers have clashed with rioters in Hackney, Peckham and Lewisham where vehicles have been set on fire.

It follows two nights of violence over the weekend which started after police shot a man dead in Tottenham.

More than 200 people have been arrested and 35 officers injured.


Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said they discussed the police response to the violence.

He said: "They were looking at preparations for tonight (Monday) to make sure any violence is dealt with quickly."


A BBC journalist said the latest violence started in Mare Street, Hackney, when a man was stopped and searched by police but nothing was found.

Riot vans were drafted in and there are up to 200 police officers in riot gear in the Hackney area.

Groups of people began attacking the police at about 16:20 BST, throwing rocks and a bin at officers.

The Metropolitan Police in London said Monday night's disturbances were the worst the force "has seen in current memory for unacceptable levels of widespread looting, fires and disorder."

The total number of people arrested in London since the violence began has risen above 450, the police said Tuesday.

With Metropolitan Police detention cells full, authorities are transporting those they arrest to surrounding police forces.


The head of London's Metropolitan Police has called for all Specials -- volunteer police officers -- to report for duty, as the capital's law enforcement resources are stretched thin.

In a Twitter post, the Metropolitan Police said: "The Commissioner has called for all Specials to report for duty and calls for employers to support this."






...During the overnight hours, standoffs continued at several locations in London as police in riot gear warily watched roaming gangs often just yards away.

Peckham resident Rebecca Skipwith, a 37-year-old charity worker, told CNN she had passed crowds of "hooded up kids" and a police cordon on her way home from work Monday. Soon afterwards, trouble erupted.

"It's quite bewildering," she said Tuesday morning.

"It was horrible this morning driving to work and seeing the smashed in shops and glass everywhere. It feels a bit of a wilderness.

"I could see a couple of burned out buildings on the main shopping street in Peckham," she added.

"I'm worried about tonight, especially because it wasn't particularly well handled. So where's the deterrent?"

In Ealing, West London, a bus was vandalized and set on fire, while the driver was still on board. He escaped without injury.


A community clean-up effort began Tuesday in London, with organizers using Twitter to get volunteers together in their local areas, using the hashtag #riotcleanup.



"And let's not beat around the bush and pretend this is some type of social justice protest -- it's sheer criminality," said Shaun Bailey, a youth worker, in a statement circulated by the mayor's office.

I'm currently unemployed, been out of work for a few months now and I've had to sign on in order just to live, actually managed to cope the first couple of months, but it's getting increasingly difficult. There's those of us who are actively seeking work all the time, attend our meetings and do all the necessary steps to try and find work and then there's the few mindless f*cking losers out there who make us all look bad.

actually as i mentioned if we continue to go in the direction we are currently going then we might see something like this in the distant future. There is too much anger and too much exploitation of people from both sides. The tea party is a collection of the angriest white mofos in teh country. Then on the other side we have people who are upset with unemployment, no housing, anti union republican governors....its just growing and growing. As mentioned we are not there but we are getting closer if we go in that direction. To add, we also have a lot of people in this country who believe they are privileged to government welfare and others taking care of them. We have a lot of people who rely on social programs and are damn upset that the government is trying to move away from those programs.

An Olympics ambassador allegedly hurled bricks at a police car and led an attack on a mobile phone store during the riots.

Chelsea Ives, 18, was today revealed as a riot suspect - after being reported to police by her mother.

She was filmed by the BBC allegedly throwing bricks at a police car during violent disturbances in Enfield on Sunday night.

Detained: Chelsea Ives is seen arriving at Westminster Magistrates Court overnight

She was seen on the nightly news by her mother Adrienne, 47, who immediately called the police. Westminster magistrates' court heard that police had to abandon their BMW in the 'frenzied' attack.

Ives, described by her lawyer as a 'talented sportswoman', is alleged to have boasted later that she had had 'the best day ever', magistrates heard.
She denied two counts of burglary, violent disorder and attacking a police car.

Ives was refused bail until August 17 when she will appear at Highbury Corner magistrates' court.
Prosecutor Becky Owen said Ives had also led an attack on a Vodafone store.


'She was first to pick up masonry and hurl it at the window,' she said. She said that Ives was also involved in a mob attack on Phones4U.
