STEP 1: Clothing; make sure you have running trainers or trainers you're comfortable running in. Wear sports clothing, whether it's zip tops, t-shirts, jumpers, vests, shorts, tights or bottoms.
STEP 2: Timing; make sure you have a timing device that can be easily accessible. One time, I used a phone that reduced me to a fumbling wreck as I finished the run, desperately trying get my mobile phone out to stop the time, which I had stuffed down my socks because I had no pockets and holding it back in those days was tantamount to gripping a brick. Maybe it was a one-off occurrence? I sure as hell didn't want to find out next time, so I got me a watch.
STEP 3: Google Earth; find a stretch of road, countryside, pavement or area you'd like to run and measure it using the appropriate tools.
STEP 4: Try and use correct running technique. Don't sway your shoulders, arms, hips and legs side to side. Always breath in using your nose and out through the mouth or nose. Youtube is a good place to visit if you'd like video demonstrations regarding correct posture, technique and the like.
STEP 5: The last step...post them times up, yeee haaa!

I have not ran a timed mile in a while but If I had to take a guess it would be somewhere in the 6:30-7:15 range. I haven't ran a timed mile in like 5 years.

I have joined a marathon and ran 6.21371 mi(10 km) in almost an hour. I can't compute it because I walked too long after I forgot I'm on a race. I'll just probably use 6 mins lol.
My long distance pace is about at 7,5 mph, don't know how fast I could run a mile though.

When I ran on my schools track team I ran a 5:10ish 1600m.
You have to run 4:30 just to qualify.
A mile is 1609m.
I never won anything :facepalm , I just did it so it would look good for my college application, didn't even do it in my senior year.

Same here. I was like 5'7, 115 pounds then.
I'm like 5'9-5'10, 170 pounds now and a smoker, so i'm guessing my mile time is like 9 minutes now :lol .

Probably about 7 minutes. Never really tried to run one as fast as possible, but I used to do 7:30 miles daily just to keep in shape so I feel like if I tried for an actual speed mile, I could do around 7 minutes.

Fastest time 5:45 two years ago. Ran alot (4 to 5 times a week, bout 25 miles a week) and played ball alot then.
Now I have had reconstructive surgery on my left knee and haven't played full court bball more than ten times since and only run two miles maybe once a month. Pretty sad now. I run two miles in the 8:30 range per mile.:facepalm

When I ran track during my high school career, a 4:30 1600 would ALWAYS win a 1600m race in a small meet.
I haven't ran the 1600m race since my sophomore year, because I always ran in the open 800m. If I had to guess what my time would be for a mile, it'd be around 4:55.

did you guys have to pass the cooper test as well? our coach required 2 miles under 12 minutes before even taking part in a session. took a lot of guys several tries, but I got myself in shape and passed the first time. that test is a killer tho.

Never tried that short a distance. I usually run between 8 and 13 km when training, and 20km or half marathon at organized contests (amateur obviously).
1:26 at 20 km and 1:29:59 (yeah) at half-marathon are my best times.

if i ran one mile only, i can probably get around 7 minutes on a track or flat run.
i ran the cherry blossom festival 10 mile race in DC in April which was a) 10 miles and not one mile and b) definitely not flat or on a track, and i did it in one hour and 24 minutes, so that was an average of 8:24 per mile for the ten miles.

So, I just ran an officially timed mile for the first time since probably 1997. I've been a basketball player for life and miles and miles have been run over the years, they've just never been timed with a stopwatch.
The last time I ran a mile was probably in April. Since then, I've been biking a lot and playing a good amount of basketball. However, I easily turned in the worst mile time in this thread, aside from Joshumitsu.
My time: 8:46.
I'm embarrassed but I figure putting it down on paper (er, computer) will be a good reference point. My saving grace is that the mile was run on a hilly terrain (with an awful hill right at the end) but even then, we're probably still talking 8:30 on flat at best.
I can almost guarantee I could have never broken the 7:00 mark, even in my athletic prime, yet somehow, I've often felt like I could outrun/outwork the vast majority of my opponents on the basketball court.
Is there a significant disparity between sprint/stop/sprint ability and non-stop endurance jogging/running?

Got bored and tried this a few weeks ago, did 7 minutes fairly easily. I could probably hit 6:30 but I haven't found the motivation to go out there and do it, I prefer sports to running by a huge margin.

Before a leg injury in beginning of high school, best I ever did was 6 mins 7 seconds. After the injury? I couldn't get faster than 7 mins 50 seconds. Never fully healed. Injured it during freshman year, was told by a physical therapist that it might need surgery in order to fully heal. I wasn't no star athlete so I didn't bother.

huge disparity cuz im good at the former but suck at the latter too lol

I jog alot, I use to go 5 miles without taking a breather in just over 46 minutes all the time. I never really ran a mile to see how fast I can do it, but my fastest time was exactly 7 minutes, that is amazing considering I was a fat slob a few years back.

Didn't feel great about my time a few days ago (8:46). The road I ran on was relatively hilly but I didn't think it'd make that much of a difference. I decided to give it a shot on an actual track this afternoon.
New time: 8:13
Obviously, still amongst the worst times in here, but it's all relative for me, since it beats the heck out of 8:46. Also, the wind was coming out of the south at 19-20 miles per hour (there was a tornado 30 miles north of me today), so with the track running north-south, one half of the run felt like I was running into a wall. I knew things were rough when an abandoned soccer ball began rolling from a standstill 120 yards diagonal across the entire field, picking up speed as it went along.
I might be overestimating, but I'm wondering if a wind-free day could allow me to get into the seven's.

At the end of high school I ran a 4:58. There were dudes on my team in the same race running under 4:30, but coming in as a slow fat kid and improving to a sub-5 mile is one of the accomplishments I am most proud of, at least from my childhood.

Well, with cops chasing you, you don't even complete the mile. You'd do a sprint to get away, and then you would collapse in fatigue way before a mile. So lets say without cops chasing you.
