It wasn't created to help your voice (talk box / vocorder) it was just for something different. To give a song a different feel. Back then, you have a 10 track LP, you might use a talk box for maybe one song, and not even the whole song, maybe just the chorus, or verse. It was an effect.

the new fad is to hate on anything autotune related. if an artist uses it appropriately it can be used to achieve great songs, just like any instrument for example.

ocean incorporates it well. one of the best rnb talents in a long time, particularly when it comes to the song writing aspect of things.
