Since some guys were interested, I figured I'd open this thread to keep track of the stats and the highlights of the Raptors' players in Eurobasket this summer.

I'll update the first post with the new stuff when the upcoming games will take place.

What's up with Calderons stats? Is he not getting much playing time because its just exhibition or what?

Thanks, Doko.

From what I've seen he's playing backup to Rubio. However, all the players of Spain are playing like 10-15 minutes per game, including the starters.
They probably just want to condition everyone on the roster before the tournament starts.

I figured it was something like that. Spain is always such a deep team.

How has Rubio been playing? Just curious.

Actually I've watched just one Spain game, but from what I've heard he's doing fairly well in limited minutes.
I'll definitely answer this better once Eurobasket starts and I see him in action against some real competition :)

Yes, there will be a lot of talent in the tournament.

Spain is favourite to win with a expected lineup of Calderon/Navarro/Rudy/Pau/Marc Gasol. Rubio and Ibaka from the bench (but big minutes for Ibaka of course).

I really can't see how Spain doesn't win, they have by far the most talent in my opinion, but you just never know.

I will say this, if the Raptors did a legit Euro push and somehow became team Spain that would be a hell of an NBA franchise. A front court of the Gasol brothers is Sedin twins dirty.

This is partially why I thought the rumors of Calderon to Minny after they signed Rubio were BS.

I can no longer find it - but I distinctly recall reading rumours or spanish press translations that basically state - bad blood between Calderon and Rubio. I goes back some time I believe. The two of them cant stand each other and might jeopardize the team chemistry....

If they are favored to win - no suprise given the talent - I will be curious to see how the Rubio /Calderon thing works out... whether this is just made up team chemistry bs from the press or whether it has some bite.

Might have something to do with jose losing his starting job to an 18 year old.

But that didn't stop them from winning.

Jose hasn't lost his starting job. He is better than Rubio. Marc Gasol or Ibaka can be the only doubt, but it seems that Marc will start the games.
Rubio (almost 21 years old) is all about potential right now. He hasn't played well this season. People think that his game can adapt well to the NBA though.

4 rebounds and 1 steal.

Jose was always in foul trouble and never got into rhythm. That could be part of the reason why Spain had such a bad game. Rubio and Sada equally shared the time at PG, which means that Rubio is not a key player at all. Spain could win the championship without Pau (Marc/Ibaka is still the best interior duo), but they would be in deep trouble without Calderon. Sorry, I understand that most people in the forum is ignorant about European basketball. Just don't say nonsense statements, like "Caleron is useless to Spain".

Jose hasn't been playing great for Spain for the entire summer (based on looking at the stats), so when does Jose actually show up and actually have a really good game? Spain has proven throughout the summer that they don't need Jose to contribute a lot in order to win.

Just so you don't make a "ignorance to European Basketball" comment: I will admit that Spain has the best frontcourt in the world outside of the USA.

Jose has hardly been playing at all. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the fact they were warmup games. But part of it is that Jose is not the player he used to be.

Yeah aren't stats apart of basketball as well? I'd rather have someone post up good numbers rather than no numbers. If "European Basketball" needs Jose surely he would post up some good numbers, but he isn't. They stats aren't there so hes probably not running pick and roll or anything special for this Spain team, actually never mind because getting the ball to one of the Gasol brothers which is extremely hard to do. Considering hes not the most top notch defender and the stats aren't there I don't see him doing much for this team.

Valanciunas looked very promising. He is very good scoring near the basket, with several good moves and scoring after contact, he is hard to defend. He opened the Spanish defence off the bench when the game was like 30-12.
He commited a lot of turnovers in previous games, and he got 3 fouls in few minutes against Spain. Those things are logical in a young player.

These are Bargs' stats for the tournament:

22,8 ppg/7,4 rpg/1,6 blk, 46,6 FG%, 35 3FG%, 83,3 FT%

my question is... if this is more or less what he averages next season... would you be happy with that?

I would be happy with that. I would be happy if he can get 8reb and 1blk. But he also will have to rotate better which doesnt show up on a stat sheet.

But let's not get carried away. His stat line is good. But it is only a handful of games against lesser talent.

Depending on the context of those stats in terms of his overall enthusiasm for the game (especially on defense), how much of the offense is run through him etc. I'd be okay with stats like that. Especially since it'd make trading him when Val comes through as our starting 5 much easier (assuming Davis also improves and becomes the starter-quality player I think he can be).

This is frankly the million dollar question about the "next season" in Toronto. The expectations of Barges are perhaps completely unattainable after years of disappointment given he was the 1st overall draft pick. Fair or unfair as that comment is (I pass no judgement) I believe it to be the most basic truth.

BUT 8 rbs a game playing the 5 - if he can average 8 rbs a game in the NBA and not in international competion verses Portugul, and UK - as well as Spain, France and Germany - well that would go a long way to rebuilding his reputation here in Toronto and around the NBA generally.

Doko - do you have his stats verse Spain France Germany. The only reason I ask is cause he would have matched up verses Gasou, Noah and the Dirk or Kaman. These stats would be in my mind very interesting and revealling.

Sorry man didnt even look :facepalm

So assuming he played head to head verses Dirk and Kaman in the German game - and J Noah (Parker not so much) in the French game these are the stats I guess I personally would evaluate his tourney performance.

Moslty cause I follow the NBA game (admitedly I am missing a picture) and cause I know the competition he played against. I simply dont know enough to grade a British 5 or a Slovanian big man.

vs Germany (L 62-76, 0-2)
8 pts/5 reb/2 blk, 3/14 21,4 FG%, 1/5 20 3FG%, 1/2 FT

vs France (L 84-91, 1-3)
22 pts/5 reb/1 blk, 9/15 60 FG%, 1/4 25 3FG%, 3/3 FT

Avg
15 pts/5 reb/1.5 blk / 12/29 – 41.3 FG% - 2/9 22.2% 3FG 4/5 FT

Not so bad either. I am very happy about the 5 ribbys - but less happy that its not 7 or 8. Still not happy on the blks which speaks to rotational D....

...but Andreas has a chance to get help on his rotational D from the coaching staff and help on his rotational D from th coaching staff coaching other players...

We will see what happens when if NBA play resumes.

Avg
15 pts/5 reb/1.5 blk / 12/29

Impressive Valanciunas against Germany (Kaman). He has all-star potential.

Valanciunas looked good from watching the highlights. He has an idea of what he wants to do on offense. And defensively, he played good man to man D. There was much help D aspect to it from the highlights, but man to man, he's a big lanky guy. Can definitely play the 5 from the looks of it. Seems to have really good hands for a big, and keeps the ball high when in the post. I'm going to start missing the NBA as soon as the blue jays season is over...

My favorite part about that video is towards the end Krstic proving that he's still a b*tch. Even in Europe.

And Jose Calderon is a champion again. It is good to have in a team a player with experience winning top level tournaments.
