So my friend introduced me to this board game over the summer and I'm pretty much addicted. Been playing online a lot the past few days. Anyone else play? If you've never played, I highly recommend it. Definitely more fun in person though.

Ive always wanted to play this didnt know there was a online version. Its basically like a strategy game were you have politics, resource gathering, and trading

My new roommate is obsessed with Risk. Think I might have to re-learn it to play. What is this game?

Everyone starts off with two settlements and roads. In order, you place them on a vertex of each hexagon. Like the red little house in the picture above. Dice are rolled and whatever number comes up, lets say an 8, whomever is on an 8 gets that resource. As you see there are five resources; ore, sheep, grain, lumber and brick. To expand, you need certain amounts of each resource in order to buy more settlements, roads, development cards or even upgrade to a city. The goal of the game is to get 10 victory points. VP's come from settlements (1 point), cities (2 points), development cards or other stuff which would take to long to explain. Your allowed to trade with people which adds a cool element and its a great game of strategy and some luck.

Explaining it makes it sound lame, you need to experience it first hand to understand. But thats pretty much the basics.

I've always said its like a mix between monopoly and risk. The good thing about it is games last only around an hour more or less. We've had one end in like 30 minutes once. My friend bought the expansion so you can play with up to 6 people. It gets pretty crazy. They have 3 other expansions but I've never played them. Too much money lol.

Anyway, if your roomie is obsessed with risk, I can pretty much guarantee he'd love this game too.

He might even have it, I'll mention it to him.

My brother told me about this.

I'll check the site out. Sounds interesting.

I miss when ISH used to play monopoly together.

i used to play this online at asobrain. they had the seafarers' expansion and the option to play the egyptian version and the "knights and cities" version. and you could play against computer opponents, there... also they had some other nice games, like carcassonne. (sp?)

unfortunately asobrain is currently in closed membership. so the only online version i know about for newcomers is playcatan...

best thing is to move on to the other top online boardgame sites:

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/
http://gametableonline.com/

those are the absolute cream of the crop IME.

I was introduced to this game about 4-5 years ago. I was really addicted for a month, but it probably helped that I won 90% of the time, so pretty shortly afterwards, my friends would no longer play that game with me.

Last time I played was 2 New Years ago when we played one of the expansion versions.

Seafarers of catan owns settlers. Wood and Wool make boats, and you get etra points if you are able to build on other islands.

Awesome game, but lots of pieces and different scenarios take time to set up.

There's also an app for the iphone.

I played it once this summer and it was a blast. Better than risk and as fun but less drawn out than monopoly.

Good game. ****ing intimidating when you first get it and look through the rules, but once you play through it a couple of times it's awesome!
