Mike Fratello: "It's a more physical game over here. NBA rules helped change the game that brought scoring up. This is a man's game over here."
Mike Fratello: "I'm very anxious to see the reaction from the NBA players that come over here. They'll be awakened to the style of bball."

NBA style of play was always geared towards iso's and fast court opportunities, therefore highlighting individual abilities of players. Euro tough grind-it-out half-court game is not to everyone's taste, but it's the classical style of basketball which is getting more and more forgotten. Players can pack the paint for as long as they want defensively and we can withness true zones as well (not pseudo half-zones of NBA)

its common sense, the European game is played below the rim, less airspace, therefore more contact.
Good job captain obvious!
In other news, American basketball players cut from NBA teams still win player of the week, month and year honors in top Euro leagues.
Maybe they were also too physical for the NBA?:D

Can't we just agree that Euroball is more physical with less physically-imposing players, with the opposite being true for the NBA.

I actually really enjoy watching FIBA basketball, honestly I like watching FIBA basketball more than a lot of the NBA teams because they play a much more team oriented game and are a lot more physical but I can definately admit that the NBA is a superior league.

Not unless we want to pass off fiction as fact. The average Euroleague player is bigger than the average NBA player. Stop posting this fantasy myth that the NBA has bigger players, when they actually are smaller.

No.you can call travelling when they actually travel. It's not like they were doing it on every possesion for gods sake.Did Usa get away with travelling on some occasions?Absolutely, but so did Spain with their moving screens,or their own travels that went uncalled.I mean look at the play at 6.58.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9-MNf2RO5k&feature=related
Gasol pushed Howard,Reyes gets the rebound and travels, and gives it to Rudy for the open 3 point shot.Did you hear anyone cry about it? when Usa gets the benefit of the call it's apparently a conspiracy but on Spains case,it's just honest mistakes.I'm tired with this bs.
The FIBA head of Olympic group reffing stated that the technical fouls were awarded to the USA at the end of that gold medal game in order to ensure victory for the USA, per the orders of FIBA to the refs that they were told that Team USA must win the gold medal before the tournament began.
Whether you like it or not, this stands as a fact and puts a huge asterisk over the USA gold medal.

It was some French female referee who didn't even officiate the final game that apparently said that. "She said":
"You don’t call the same things on the Americans than you do call on other teams. You have to call the most evident of the evident things. If you whistle a travel every time that Kobe Bryant starts a drive, you will get whistled, you as the referee … During the final, the Spanish team was penalized on the US travels. With the consequences that we know at the end with the two technical fouls on non-called traveling violations. This was embarrassing…"

There's no primary links to the quote and it's all from a quote posted by some dude on the ballineurope.com website, so 99% it isn't true. It's just an excuse for butthurt fans that can't admit the vast superiority of US basketball. :oldlol:
If she really said it, it would have caused way more of a media outrage.

The ref said it in the French newspaper. STOP LYING. You KNOW she said it. And she was the head of Olympic reffing for the group stage of the tournament.
Sorry, but no matter how much Americans pretend this did not happen, the fact remains that it DID happen. The fact that Americans keep denying it and trying to pretend it never happened is a clear proof of how much they do not care about fair play and sportive competition, but rather only care about being patriotic zealots.
Americans are still bitching about 1972 USA - Soviet Union game, which has never been admitted as a fix, or as a questionable call anywhere on the planet, except in the USA. They can't accept that they lost.
Meanwhile, the Spain - USA game is widely believed around the world to have been fixed and Americans act like this is imaginary. Do you have any grasp of how pathetic that is? Seriously. It's incredibly pathetic. It really is.

The NBA is softer than other leagues, this is a FACT and has been documented here dozens and dozens of times.
Having said that, this doesn't guarantee that US players will have a problem adjusting to the Euroleague's more physical style of play, why? because we just tend to be better players... PERIOD.
Their overall level of play is still inferior (not that we're THAT much better), but it'll be like an NBA player playing against top Divison 1 college schools.
I think the bigger adjustment for an American player is the 'style' of play. It isn't an iso league, there tends to be far more passing and team play than Americans are used too.
Now... in regards to physical play.
Physical play IS a factor and it WILL take some time for some American players to adjust too. But again, they're still just better so they can still get by. Physical play is much more of a factor when the competition is on par with each other. So if the NBA became more physical, it will be NBA players being physical with NBA players, and we'd see a statistical decline for offensive players all across the board.
It just seems as tho some people here try to diminish the effect physical play has on players, when it's a big factor.

Even after NBA changed it to completely sissy rules to benefit scoring, Kobe still cannot dominate the game fully & gets overshadowed by Lebron, Wade, Iverson, Durant easily.

believe me, I'm old enough to have watched games from the 80's...NBA was always about iso ball and individual qualities of the players. Euro ball is completely different and it revolves arround setting millions of screens, picks and constant players movement off the ball. Current NBA game can't be much further from what you would call a "classical" style of play

On the perimeter? Yeah, but inside, it's not even close.
Euroleague is a lot more physical inside than the NBA is. Many times players are being fouled (as in what is a foul in the NBA) around the basket, while shooting, or fighting for rebounds and there are no whistles. While it is rare that any well-known NBA player does not get a whistle if there is contact near the basket.
In the NBA, a guy like Dwight Howard complains about not getting enough free throws, when he would be getting less in Euroleague.

Amazing how the "soft" Americans hold Gold Medals at every level of International competition in the entire World. There literally isn't a single International title/accolade that isn't currently in control of the USA. Complete World domination in the sport of Basketball... and last FIBA tournament we even sent our B-squad.

Joakim Noah on the FIBA EuroBasket:
"The competition level is very high. In the NBA, the European game has a reputation of being less physical and soft. That is not true, it is more physical. There is more team play and the no defensive three seconds rule changes a lot of things. In the NBA, you know where the shots will come from. Here, they take shots from everywhere. The game is more intelligent. There is less space, you have to be in the right place at the right time."
