Anyway, does anyone know how betting on tennis works? I'm curious the odds of Serena Williams. She's a 28 seed. You gotta profit if she gets far in this tourney no?

Nah bro. I bet on tennis quite a bit, the oddsmakers know their stuff. Seeding is pretty much irrelevant when Serena's on the court. The seeds just follow the year round rankings (Serena's is low because she hardly played in any tournaments in the last year). She played against Azarenka last round (the number 4 seed) and the odds were like 1.2 for Serena and 4-5ish for Azarenka.

I've got $2000 on Serena to win the women's tourney @ 2.85

So if she wins I make $3700 in profit.

Other than that, I've had a bunch of smaller bets on individual matches and also on Eurobasket

Serena looks unbeatable. Only way she doesn't win is if she gets hurt. Who's going to beat her, Wozniaki? I don't think she has the firepower. Serena just too powerful.

For the guys, Djoko has looked amazing as well. Thats to be expected but hes just straight merking everyone. Nadal and Fed look solid but if they play, I expect Djoko to pull it out.

Can't believe Roddick is in. I hate the guy but hes surprised me. After looking pretty bad imo the first match hes turned it on.

And I'm really excited for the Fish/Tsonga match. Two of my fave players, hopefully Fish can pull it out. It'll be really tough, Tsonga is a great competitor.

Coming after last night's even more epic tiebreak between Kirilenko and Stosur. They had like 3 challenges or so overturned.

Dolgo is a crazy maniac though, that's how he beat Soderling and Tsonga in Australia at the beginning of the year (If I remember correctly).

Even reaching the Q-finals is an accomplishment for Roddick at this point. He's on the downside of his career, and is currently the 3rd highest ranked American male. I was surprised Andy beat Ferrer in the last round to be honest.

If you want to see a real showdown, watch the Djoker vs. Federer matchup tomorrow.

Once again I hope Federer wins but "anyone other than Djokovic" would be a good result too. Fed has looked damn good but hasn't really faced much competition. People were making too big of a deal about one match where Tsonga played as if he had a gun to his head and won. He's not close to the level of the top 3 guys.

Roddick usually looks like crap against the elite players.

I was surprised he got by Ferrer cause Ferrer's one of the best returners in the game. Fatigue and injuries were brought up in his match with Nadal but he was just outplayed.

He didn't get a high percent of his first serves in and Nadal attacked his second serve. I thought Roddick was an idiot for getting in those long rallies with Nadal; seems like he was content with being defensive instead of taking the initiative and Nadal will kill you in those rallies. Rafa hit some really good passing shots as well when Roddick would try to volley.

I think Nadal will win this. Murray doesn't stand a chance; he has the talent but Nadal's a lot more tougher mentally. Djoko/Fed should be a good one. Hard to say who'll get through.

First of all, he's 30.

Secondly, 28 is quite old for a tennis player. Tennis players usually peak in their mid 20s and retire in their early 30s because of injuries and a lack of motivation. Fed is still a great player but nowhere near his prime years.

There's a few exceptions like Agassi and Connors who had unreal longevity. But for the most part that's the norm.

Even Sampras looked done around 30 till he raped everyone in the 2002 USO and conveniently retired right after.

I think Federer may win a couple more because he's stayed pretty injury free but it'll be really hard since Nadal and Djoker are at the top of their game with Murray right at the corner.

It will be hard but as long as hes in the semis every major, hes got a chance. and definitely always ALWAYs has a chance against murray. murray will never win a slam because he just plays too defensively.

im picking nadal in 4 on monday. im not betting any money on that so we'll see. i think both men are really in form and there will be extra incentive for nadal to win seeing as how djoke has beaten him 5 times already this year and all in finals.

He definitely has a chance and he won't have a lot of trouble getting to the semis because at their best, these four are so far above everyone else.

But its gonna be hard for him to get by Nadal or Djoker as time passes by. Unless he catches a break and those two are either injured or eliminated early which isn't that likely since those two hardly have slip ups unlike the former top players (Roddick, Hewitt, Safin ect).

I mean who was expecting Fed to lose to Tsonga at Wimbly after being up 2 sets to 0. That shit just didn't happen to prime Federer.

Maybe. She is atrociously arrogant, however.

As far as what you said about the tennis community giving her a hard time, I would like to add something from the perspective of someone outside of the US. I don't think I've ever heard American announcers ever admit that Serena (and Venus to a lesser extent) has played well in a match she has lost. I think a lot of people who watch tennis, and specifically the American broadcasts, resent Serena (and again, Venus to an extent even though she's much classier) because they have this attitude that she only loses when SHE LOSES, not when someone BEATS HER.

People get annoyed when the American commentators only want to talk about what she did wrong in a loss, rather than giving more credit to the winner.

So while maybe many people in the tennis community give her a hard time, I believe the American media babies her unlike any other American I've ever seen. They're hard on Roddick and the other men. But the sisters? If you go by the American commentators, the only matches they have ever lost are due to time off, injury, head not into it, etc.

I can see how that builds resentment for some.

well, it's mainly your own behavior that creates the reasons for people to like you or dislike you. especially if you're a public person.

there is always going to be racism thrown your way by various groups no matter what your skin color, but one thing you have a chance of modifying is your own behavior. venus learned this lesson a long time ago, but serena still seems to glory in her own arrogance and mean-spiritedness as much as ever. at least, far too much for the average fan's taste.

she reaps what she sows. it's basically that simple. it's happened to others before her, and it will happen to others after her. that's life.

Watching it again and the incident just happened (didn't see it all the first time).

There is no defense for what Serena did there. Her actions were absolutely moronic, idiotic, pathetic, etc.

It was even awkward listening to the American commentators trying to be polite and see things from her side. I wanted just one of them to flat out "Serena is a moron."

The umpire got the call right. Serena flipped out even though she was wrong. Then calls out the official for being biased, having bad character, saying she wouldn't have called it that way for other players, tells the umpire not to look at her while she's verbally harassing her for the entire change-over, etc.

She should have been thrown out of the match at that point. But hey, she might be unfairly treated by some people in the tennis world so she gets a free pass.

If anyone here says what she did out there was anything less than moronic...I don't know what to say....

I'd like to see the press conferences too. Doubt there's an apology. Just some lame one word answers that you can barely hear as per usual.

let's be real... that's rubbish.

you simply can't be yelling out things while the other player is hitting the ball or getting ready to hit the ball. tennis is not like basketball in that way, which i guess you didn't know.

it's bad enough that so many of the women's players shriek like banshees every time they simply hit the ball. it's turning off a growing number of spectators and the pressure is mounting on the tournaments to do something about it...

hes a grinder. simply loops the ball over the net, gives himself enough time to get in good position to return it again for the next ball. simply waits for his opponent to make mistakes now.

watching it on usopen.org and i have a question--

who are these announcers? i know at least one of them is a former player, but... yeesh. i think people in the past were much less annoying, like the mac brothers, bud-somebody, and most of those former female players, like pam shriver.

they all had the ability to be both low-key but interesting, even controversial. these guys- one of them sounds like he's half dead, and the other is this noisy nerd who can't shut up.

at 3-2, djoko hit an approaching shot and it clipped the net and popped up, and the color commentator was like "i can't believe djokovich hit such a weak volley like that... oh, wait... on the replay now i see that it hit the top of the net. nevermind."

he has one of the most brilliant resumes in tennis at the mere age of 25 and is still a total beast IMO. i disagree that he's regressed, since his active defense and enormous topspin still blows 99.9% of other players away... including federer.

he has many physical issues, but they are irrelevant at this time. he's still a beast when it counts after he's taken his typical huge amount of time to rest between points.

instead of putting down nadal, IMO it would be better if people simply celebrated how fantastic of a player the djoker is, and what an incredible year he's had. and how his brilliant and intelligent versatility has allowed him to beat the other three with consistency- federer, nadal, murray.

Nadal's best years are behind him... with his play-style he has already reached his peak in 2010 and will be regressing, still competitive given ample amount of rest, but regressing nonetheless.

And honestly, if it weren't for the rise of Novak, Nadal would probably have 12 grand slams right now and talks of him being the GOAT would be inevitable...

Federer just had to ruin the whole party by beating Djoker at the French... he stoped Djoker of accomplishing what both he and Nadal could never do... winning all 4 slams in the same year.

Great win for Joker, I had a blast watching this match, so many great rallies.

Novak has obviously had an unbelievable year, but he has a long way to go before his success can be measured against Fed and Nadal's.

It's crazy that a player can be one point away from losing (Joke against Fed) and then go on to win the championship. Part of what makes tennis a great sport.

I love watching Nadal, plays every point so hard and is always classy whether he wins or loses. He is the best thing that has ever happened to tennis.

Nadal has not shown any signs of regression so far. He's only 25 and takes fantastic care of his body. I see no reason why he'd start to decline. The mans only lost 11 times this year and 6 of them were to Djokovic. He's still very much in his prime.

No-Djoke's game has completely evolved this year. I remember when he was primarily a defensive player. He stuck to his baseline and was accurate with his returns. Now his transition game from defense to offense is probably the best I've ever seen. He's patient, but when he finds his opening he attacks with ferocity. To tell you the truth I think with this skillset his prime will be greater than Fed's.

This is definitely true especially regarding the surface modifications. Wimbledon, before the 2001 and 2008 (not sure about 08 but it happened some time around there) changes was a ridiculously fast surface favoring big servers and serve and volley guys. But, now its not as fun to watch and there's longer rallies, its like you're watching a clay court grindfest.

Nadal wouldn't have won Wimbledon or the US Open in the 90s or early 00s due to the faster surface. He wouldn't have beat Federer either. That's why Federer is so great. He's dominated both on the slower courts and the faster ones because he's so great at adjusting his game and beating guys at their own game.

Why do you think a guy like Andy Roddick did so well in the mid 00s? His huge serves paid off on those faster courts and he would have about 6-7 slams if it wasn't for Federer.

You put Sampras and Agassi in today's era, they would definitely have trouble cracking the top 3; Sampras more so than Andre because Agassi had a better all around game. But it's entirely due to the surface changes. Pete was never that successful on the slower courts because the slower bounces took away the impact of his serve and volley game and it showed in his results in French Open.

Pete would definitely get the better off Nadal and Djokovic in his own era though. No way can they deal with his serve on a fast court like Wimbly or USO.

It's pointless to compare the eras. Players are going to adapt to the surfaces of their time period, if Nadal played in the 90's he would be playing differently, and the same goes for Pete if he played today.
