I came across this awhile ago and was curious about the rest of the results.

All I could find was Ricky Pierce as the best sixth man, Olajuwon as the best interior defender and the Boston Garden as the best/toughest arena to play in.

Dale Ellis was a money shooter. I'm surprised Eddie Johnson didn't make it.

A couple of coaches called him the best player in the league and the MVP cause of the huge turnaround.

It was Nellie and Fitzsimmons I think.

Magic's name sure shows up a lot. Before Jordan became an icon there were a lot of people saying Magic was the GOAT.

I would say that this time period (late 80's-early 90's) was the absolute peak of the NBA in terms of product and mainstream popularity, although we did not know it at the time.

The David Robinson hype was immense for about 2 years, and with good reason I guess. Then Shaq showed up on the horizon and no one cared about DR anymore.

Magic is my favorite player of all time. He's on the extremely short list of players that I think that you could place on any team and no matter what pieces they already have he could fit in, be effective, and improve them.

I'm not going to lie and act like KJ was considered cream of the cop back then, because he simply wasn't. The best way to show that is to show what happened on DT II where they completely revamped the roster from DT 1.

KJ wasn't included in the original roster over guys like Mark Price, Steve Smith, Dan Majerle, Joe Dumars, Tim Hardaway and one more I think. Miller because I remember him going off in one of the halves.

But the funny thing is Hardaway went down with an injury and they picked Isiah ****ing Thomas over KJ. Isiah was totally done at that point. And you can't tell me it was a PR move or a consolation prize for Zeke, because if the committee felt that way, they would have put him on the original roster. They didn't.

KJ was picked after Timmy and Zeke went down. Ridiculous when you look back at it.

But anyway, I'm one of the people who believes KJ was underrated back then partly due to Chambers getting too much credit and partly due to playing in the golden era for PGs. Hindsight is 20/20.

David Robinson isn't as good as he was considered in retrospect. You can't tell me he was better than Jordan in 1991 or the best prospect since Kareem.

People are often wrong. I was looking at the All-NBA 1st team votes for 1991 and I was shocked that Magic and Jordan weren't unanimous picks. Shit happens.

Some other stuff I found from the survey. You can find some valuable info if you look hard enough.

Shoes are named after him, and Spike Lee is his right-hand man. Recognized wherever he goes, Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls is a one-man sellout machine.

Yet in perhaps the greatest tribute to the multi-talented guard, one National Basketball Association general manager says the league's most publicized player is also its most underrated.

"I just think he's spectacular," said the general manager. "He's so good and people recognize he's very, very good. But I don't think they realize how much he does and what he creates.' The vote for Jordan was just one of the findings in a 14-question Long Beach (Calif.) Press-Telegram survey of NBA general managers, assistant coaches and head coaches conducted to coincide with the arrival of the playoffs, which began Thursday.

Several categories produced clear-cut winners:

Jordan is considered, not surprisingly, the league's toughest player to defend and one of the best clutch players.

Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers edged Jordan as the best clutch player, and easily beat Utah's John Stockton as the best passer.

Rebounding and shot-blocking champion Akeem Olajuwon of Houston was voted the best rebounder and interior defender.

Milwaukee's leading scorer, Ricky Pierce, easily won as best sixth-man.

On the controversial side, Atlanta forward Dominique Wilkins received the most votes in the "most overrated" category, beating out, among others, teammates Jon Koncak and Kevin Willis.

On the other side of the ledger, Phoenix guard Jeff Hornacek was recognized as the NBA's most underrated player. Only one voter opted for Jordan.

I like how three Hawks were picked for the most overrated category.

^This is from the same survey by the way. April 1990.

Im surprised of 22 voters 6 didnt want Magic. And I wonder who didnt want either Barkley or Malone. Barkley was on half the lists. I guess Bird could have gotten a lot of votes since it was forwards not power forwards(Barkley played alot of 3 back then anyway). But id like to see the full voting just to see who was beating out Magic.

Shaq came along.
Shaq did take away some of Robinson's hype but I don't think the Robinson hype totally died down until he manhandled by Hakeem. That's when people started calling him soft and recognizing his weaknesses.

I would have loved to seen a Robinson vs Shaq playoff match up in the mid 90s. Wish they played in the same conference, or even division. Robinson may have got the better off him in the season but I have little doubt Shaq would have killed him in the playoffs.

Shaq called this guy out even before the stat padding incident. Robinson would always tell the media Shaq had nothing to be jealous from. Nice little rivalry that was developing.

Sick match up between the two from 1994.

That was before Ewing slowed down/got banged up and became mostly a jump shooter. Ewing was having a 29/11 season shooting 55% and blocking 4 shots a game. And it was taken in april? In the previous two months he had averaged 32/12 and 31/12 on 58 and 59% shooting. In April and march he had games of:

40/15
37/19/9 blocks
37/17 the game before that
37/21/6/5 two games before that

Which was 2 games after he had 51/18 and 41/12 in back to back games. He was having games of 44/22. And 44/24.

He was straight rampaging through the NBA. And really so was Karl Malone. Karl put up 34/10, 29/9, and 33/13 in the months leading up to this survey.

So both of them got a little more love than they likely would at an average point of their careers.

But you can see why. They were on top of their games. 1990 was before I even decided Karl Malone was a bitch. He had not started the soft ass fadeaways 19 times a game. He rebounded more. He wasnt as good a passer back then but he was going pretty hard for a while there.

To the Shaq/ D-Rob quasi rivalry...Because of his step father's military career Shaq lived in San Antonio for a while. I remember Shaq saying that when he was a teenager, Robinson brushed him off for an autograph or something like that, and he never forgot it. That '94 scoring title stat padding move by the Spurs was definitely a little bush league though.

I think that this was like the Unseld 1969 MVP. As a rookie, D-Rob was the centerpiece (no pun intended) of a major turnaround (35 games). The hype and emotions surrounding stories like that tend to get the best of people.
