Just saw this...

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma -- which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." -Steve Jobs

Will apple go down hill without him?

don't know about downhill but i'm sure aapl's momentum will slow down. look what happened to apple when he was forced out in the 90's and how it came back after he returned. apple is better equipped to handle his loss now but they still just lost their heart, soul and visionary.

I definitely think they'll lose something.

While I do think that he wanted OS Lion to be somewhat like it is. I don't think he wanted it to be so...iOS. I think that's the start of Cook's reign, and they just made it under Jobs. Because really he NEVER disappointed Apple fans with hardware or software, and there's no one I know that likes Lion more than Snow Leopard.

In discovering computation, man has taken his first steps to mastering the process that lies at the heart of creation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_physics). We will become gods ourselves, transcend our singular path through the multiverse, and write our own destiny. Your God wasn't the first, and he won't be the last.

Alan Turing, the father of modern computation, killed himself by eating an apple - the fruit of knowledge - that he had laced with cyanide. He knew that the discovery of computation would be our species most significant and profound existential coup.

Steve Jobs, despite his foibles, represented a lineage of great thinkers.

but enough about that, because who really cares...

in the long run, will apple keep it up? did Steve leave enough pieces in place to keep the company on the up and up? how will they fare in the coming years based on the progress of other companies, the people they have in there now, what they've got on the table now, etc?

as the global financial world is about to implode even further, inevitably dragging all companies, including apple, with it, he leaves the world with high mark terms. guess this gives new meaning to "leaving at the top of your game."

musical artists are somehow given extra prestige when they die in their prime. same with actors, athletes, celebrities, or even politicians (think JFK). jobs is obviously a well-known figure and has become a celebrity himself. people always talk about legacy, and he probably left a legacy that would be untouched and talked about in the business world for some generations.

i still remember apple being almost bankrupt before jobs reclaimed his position. apple was virtually as good as dead and on life support lines. but to see where the company stands today as the world's biggest company is just mindboggling. dude is probably the goat for ceo's.

"You know, I've got a plan that could rescue Apple. I can't say any more than that it's the perfect product and the perfect strategy for Apple. But nobody there will listen to me."

He will be remembered for his passion, vision, and creativity. He is without a doubt the most inspiring & succesful chief executive officer we have ever had in America.

To give you an example of how valuable this man was to Apple; "The same minute Apple announced that Steve Jobs is stepping down as CEO, their stock dropped more-so then when Microsoft announced a three billion dollar cut of their annual dividends."

This is the same person that stated in his corporate policy; "If our customer service personnel receive complains about any particular commodity that exceeds one-tenth of a percent of our total sales from that product, we scrap it worldwide. We do not modify the product, or dignify our mistakes. We rectify our mistakes and cherish our friends.

By friends he means customers, but he always referred to Apple's customers and employees (or any stakeholder) as a dear friend.

My favorite quote of his that kind of sums up what I think of him as a business-man:

"The people who are crazy enough to change the world, are the ones who do."

Not to mention he was a philantropist to countless communities and a mentor to anyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
Only the good die young...

Good bye to one of the greatest leaders of our time.

RIP "Jobs".

the warped liberal principles that you project onto people or actual liberal principles? if it's the former, the question only makes sense to you, and if it's the latter, the question doesn't make sense at all.

I don't believe it. I think these rich elite folk do the 'Underworld', where they are put to sleep for 100's/1000's of years and wake up younger. All the while more people are put to sleep, wake up, rule, get old, 'die', and be put to sleep.

At first I didn't really get the "genius" talk, clearly great businessman and all that, but just said to myself, "the guy makes phones and mp3 players, who gives a shit?"

Then I thought about it a bit more, and in my lifetime I can't think of anyone that's transformed the day to day activities of me and my peers, for better or worse, more than him. I do still think this outpouring of emotion is a bit much, the dude wasn't a saint, but whatever.

Computers as we know them, music industry, the way we listen to music, the way we use our phones, and people aren't aware of how involved he was in the shaping of modern internet.

there's a video of him talking about the internet, I've been looking for it and I'll post a link as soon as I find it.

He has impacted almost every aspect of our life.

He didn't invent these things, he understood its importance before others did, he had the vision and had the capacity to realize this vision. He also knew how to assemble the pieces and make his vision something for the masses. Not just geeks or techies or a specific industry, but multiple ones.

Jobs sees opportunities (that will make money) and goes for it, with his company's superior marketing power.

There were a bunch of digital music players before iPod (Rio, NOMAD, etc). There were a bunch of smartphones before iPhone (Palm, Blueberry, etc). There were a bunch of tablet PCs before iPad. For some reasons, Apple beat them all.

It's more than marketing. Almost every single device came with a new way to interact with it that was much better than the other devices on the market. That was the innovation that combined with their marketing put them so far over the top.

There were a bunch of digital music players before iPod (Rio, NOMAD, etc). There were a bunch of smartphones before iPhone (Palm, Blueberry, etc). There were a bunch of tablet PCs before iPad. For some reasons, Apple beat them all.

It isn't just seeing opportunities, its knowing which opportunities to jump on. But not just that, he didn't just follow what others were doing, he did things differently.

A. The personal computer.... he adopted a system that XEROX threw away, he had the vision to foresee use future of computing. If it wasn't for his vision we'd all be seeing command lines.

B. He created different 'experiences'. Take for instance the iPod. sure, there was other digital media players, but he didn't just make the iPod easier to use he created a new experience, such as iTunes. People can hate on iTunes but he completely changed how we consume music along with changing the music industry (and the movie industry along with the tv industry is terrified of him).

C. You mentioned tablet pcs... but before the iPad came along where were they? DEAD.... they were nowhere to be found. He changed the entire paradigm and ecosystem, how we use them, what we use them for, how they work, what they're for etc.etc. he reshaped the conventional way of thinking.

D. Yes... there was smartphones before, but not like the iPhone. He didn't just change the device itself, but the industry as a whole. Most people underrate the power he took away from carriers which is a good thing.

I mean... those are just a few things we must consider before we sell the man short and simply pass him off as an opportunist. I'd be inclined to agree if he did it once, but this many times? specially when he had the vision of what he wanted to achieve years and years before the devices actually got announced. If we take a look at some of his past interviews and speeches we can get a glimpse of what's to come, and it looks very promising. His vision for the future was spot on dozens of years ago and has had a consistent record at being correct.

Something for everybody to think about whether they like Apple or not.

Can any of us imagine the stuff he could've created as time went on?

Let us think about the industries he could've changed if he was still here with us for another decade or so. The world will truly miss him, he made ALL our lives better and at the very least, sped up tech world's evolution. I mean, chances are extremely high that we'd still have those old RAZR phones with crappy operating software (by comparison to today's OS). The technology to keep up with the demands has also increased due to his pushing of his vision both directly and indirectly.

Rip a very sad day

What? All the dude did was help people get closer to Satan and not God.

piracy or downloading music you aint paid fo is stealing... sin.
Same sheet with movies... hello imac...

Here's the most interesting part doe like... all the while, he was makin' mad bank and fooling the world he was actually helping them...

The guy didnt care about anyone but himself... he was never about helping people... it was all about him... from the beginning.

Apple... bite out of the apple... yeah, why? From the BEGINNING.... hummmm

Original sin... knowledge of God... knowing all thing... both good and evil...

porn, stealing music, movies, unlimited knowledge globally, etc etc etc

When God's plan for US is to just live normal, simple lives... don't need all that knowledge... dont need all them degreez... dont need all that blah blah blah tecnology... it all builds up PRIDE and CLASS.

both of which God can not stand... we're all equally loved by God... but if you dont have an iPHone I guess you aint cool in the real world...

:facepalm

This world is a fu*king pile of doo doo... and we're only making it stink more and more... and God is just about fed the flip up... teh plug about to be pulled....

Real talk...

Gay Marriage... all the natural disasters... the revolution... etc... the end is coming, or already here... or both.

I know... I know... none of you want to hear that mess... well, get right with God. If you do that... all is well, no?

Get on it then...

Steve Jobs was a genius innovator. I hope he rests in peace, and I send my condolences to his family.

I am not a huge fan of his company in some ways. No hate here for him or Apple, but I have issues with some of what they have done, more than most companies. And, I always found it odd that Jobs didn't give to charity despite his massive wealth, and also that he canceled all of Apple's philanthropic programs when he came back to the company in 1997. I hope that there is charity granted in his will.

But overall, I think he was a genius innovator, and a positive force for the world. RIP Steve Jobs.

I've never owned an apple product, but he gets my props for his foresight, innovation and resilience.
I'm still not sold on tablet PCs though, they're far inferior to regular laptops IMO. iPad is for pure consumption of content, on laptops you can actually create content.

Great video with Eric Schmidt, Marc Andreessen and Walt Mossberg.

http://www.bloomberg.com/video/77067952/

Including the origins of the black mock turtleneck.

Steve worrying about the translucency of a glass in the original Apple Store.

Steve's anger.

Steve's ability to foresee the world years ahead.

Steve's reasons for open vs closed systems.

Rare Steve presentation at a Windows Developer conference:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaX25rxOY8Q

I've seen various vids of experts asking Steve questions and he completely handles his own, as tho he were the actual developer. Which puts to rest the doubts people had about his technical knowledge and that all he was was a showman.
