Purple Rain

By the way, anybody else noticed that Prince has more cross-over hits than Michael had?

Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette, When Dove Cries, Kiss, 1999, etc all are still playing on pop radio today. While Beat It and Billie Jean seems like the only MJ songs that hits the airwave these days.
You must not here every song on those stations. Don't Stop, Rock With You, The Way You Make Me Feel, I Just Can't Stop Loving You, You Are Not Alone get as much play as those Prince songs you mentioned.

Those songs (the 4 by Prince) might get more play on a soft rock station than MJs songs. But a pop station I doubt it.

tough choice....

First we got the mega singles:

Thriller -vs- Purple Rain <-- very close call, but Thriller's baseline helps the track win by a hair

Lady In My Life -vs- The Beautiful Ones

The mid-tempo hits:

close call, but my votes count as Thriller 5-4 Purple Rain

my feeling is Thriller had solid singles, but as an album overall i enjoy Purple Rain more.

my toughest choice was the first one when doves cry vs billy jean. both great songs, but once again the great baseline in billy jean topped it for me. The Thriller album has a lot of tracks with great baselines.

Kizzle, I think you read my mind from earlier today. I was gonna make a thread about the crossover hits between the two but I forgot about it. Good thing you made this thread.
You can make it, this is just one album

Pointless now, you already answered it.
MJ has more pop appeal, but Prince (later on in his career) dabbled in other genres of music. He's put out all jazz albums, ect.

How the f*ck is baby be mine filler? It's the best song off the album. Also probably his best and most sincere vocal performance.

Calm down, I couldn't think of anything else for baby Be Mine vs Computer Blue. How about strong album cuts?

I love both album but I am going with Thriller.

Human Nature is the greatest song ever sung by a man.

And Computer Blue is also way too good of a jam to be classified as filler.

It's got one of the coolest grooves, and some of the best instrumental performances I've heard on a Prince song. And the rare extended edition of it is amazing.

Anyway:

When Doves Cry - Billie Jean
Let's Go Crazy - Beat It
Purple Rain - Thriller
The Beautiful Ones - Lady In My Life
I Would Die 4 U - Human Nature
Take Me With U - The Girl Is Mine
Baby I'm A Star - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
Darling Nikki - P.Y.T.
Computer Blue - Baby Be mine

Purple Rain was, as a whole, the more interesting, consistent, entertaining and superior album.

Opiate painkillers vs weed as painkiller.
One can be ODed the other not.
Tbh I don't know if Little Richard smokes, but Berry got busted a few years ago IIRC.

I kinda feel like watching Purple Rain for some reason. Great music. During the Computer Blue scene it looks like that girl is sucking him off on stage. Prince was too racy for us kids.

Most of the songs on Thriller were written by someone else. Jackson was more of a promoter, dancer, entertainer. Prince wrote almost all his songs as well as play the instrumentation. Prince was a true artist, Jackson was a businessman-pawn-artist hybrid.
