View Full Version : Kobe Bryant against the Suns in the 2010 playoffs

Just kind of thought of how dominant Kobe was in this series. Game 6 in particular was amazing. Every time the Suns scored in the fourth quarter, Kobe would come right back and hit some ridiculous momentum-killing shot. Kobe flat out carried the Lakers in this series. They probably would have lost if not for his heroics.
Game 1: 40/5/5
Game 2: 21/5/13
Game 3: 36/9/11
Game 4: 38/7/10
Game 5: 30/11/9
Game 6: 37/6/2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjZZ2e-wr5c
Reggie Miller on Kobe after game 6: "He showed tonight that he is truly the best player and closer in the league."
And before anyone says "lulz the Suns defense sux", no, this was not a defense coached by Mike "What's defense?" D'Antoni. The Suns had a very solid defense in 2010. Just watch the highlights. Kobe was hitting ridiculously hard shots throughout the series.

If you read my post from earlier, the rating can go to the trash can. I used my eyes to see how the defense was being played. They actually pretty damn good for the most part.
Hill played Kobe solid. So did Dudley. J-Rich was overmatched really. The help was there or Kobe split them. Kobe' s 3 point shot in this series was bang on.
If other use the ratings for the older players than your trolled, man. Ignore them and move on. If you saw how good those defenses back then, that's all that should matter to you. Not some troll.

Kobe went crazy during that series and single handedly killed us.
If he didn't have such a series the Suns could've gone all the way that year.
What was even scarier is that if you watch his shots, Hill played GREAT defence on him and 90% of them were HEAVILY contested.

Kobe played some of the best offensive ball I've ever seen from anyone in that series.
None of that excessive dribbling, jab stepping for 7 seconds to free himself and create space. Dude was making quick and the right decisions and didn't buy into that gimmick zone defense the Suns played. He was moving the ball too and distributing when required. I remember Wade struggling against the same 2-3 zone PHX threw at him in the season. Made him a bit tenative.
But yeah his jumper was on fire all series long and with the type of defense being played, you'd have people saying Hill shut him down if he was missing those shots.
The Lakers perimeter shooting was garbage all series long IIRC. Fisher and Artest couldn't buy a bucket and they played zone for a couple of games which made the lane clogged. Kobe was just on fire. I needed to say that one more time.
To be fair though, a lot of times he was matched up on Nash's side and Nash couldn't do much.

I love Kobe's game, and he was great against Utah and Phoenix in those playoffs.
But let's be honest and accurate; Phoenix was softer than Charmin...proven by and...
....Secondly, for those claiming how amazing he was in those whole playoffs,
Kobe avg'd 23.5, 4, and 4.3 while shooting 40.8% in the combined series against OKC and Boston that playoffs.
That's pretty brutal, so let's be careful of revisionist history. :facepalm

His health wasnt up to par in that okc series but once he got that knee drained... he destroyed utah and phoenix, and despite what people say he played well during that celtics series did what he had to do to win, it was a grind out defensive series and nobody on either team played THAT well. apparently you didnt watch the playoffs that year.....:confusedshrug:

Still averaged 20 FGA for the series. Doesn't matter though. Started playoffs slow, then played well, then struggled against a strong defense. Even the best struggle against the best.

When you play in 2 blowout games it will skew the stats, espicially if your talking about just 13 games

They didn't skew anything because he still played enough minutes and attempted enough shots. He shot poorly against both of those teams. In fact, in those blowouts he shot better (5/10 and 4/9 I think) than he did in the games he played full minutes, so if anything, they skewed his efficiency upwards. Not to mention he still averaged 37 mpg and 20 FGA for the series. What, 2 more minutes and one more FGA would make a huge difference in his FG% and ppg?

When did I deny any of that? I watched the games too. How do those facts change anything I said in my post?
If you play 30 min in one game, then 43 in another 2, then your average mpg is still high 30s, which is the average for any star. Every star player has fluctuations in their minutes. That's why average numbers exist. What's the difference between playing 43, 30, and 43 minutes in 3 games, or playing 37, 37, and 38 minutes in 3 games?

And that's why average numbers exist. Because there are outliers everywhere when taking in data. If he still shot 20 FGA/game for the series then what harm did those 2 games do? Prevented him from averaging 25 FGA/game? Outliers happen. They're not just thrown out though, they're incorporated into averages.

That playoff run proved that he was still the best player in the world in 2010.
Now before the haters bring up his stats against the Celtics... it was an incredibly tough series in terms of defense being played, and it was pretty much predetermined before the game 7 that Kobe would have won the FMVP even if Boston had won.
He was THAT much better than any other player from both teams.

I don't know if commenting on the defense is the best strategy to marginalize his play from that series. Many of the shots he was taking and hitting weren't easy, and there were quite a number of occasions where it didn't matter what kind of defense was being played... he just continued to hit mid-range shots.
It's funny that when people mention that most teams from the 60s, 70s, and 80s played like the Suns did in 2009-2010 (with several years where the league average was to give up 110-118 points a game), others balk and argue that you can't compare eras.

Good point. A tough shot is a tough shot no matter what kind of defense is being played. That being said, I don't think the majority of his shots were that tough. Check this out....not sure if it's been posted or not
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDmnJAaxnQQ
Yeah, he was hitting some tough shots in that clip, but for the most part they were all routine shots for him. His 3's were either wide open or he caught the pass fully in rhythm. The defense looked like they were in awe of what they were seeing. No one had their hand up or anything. Shit, he was getting to the rim, creating space, and scoring with ease. When you have every move in the book, and play Phoenix, it's a wrap. I fully expected him to go off like that. Hell, I'd expect that as of right now. That's why it's not really impressive to me. The only tough shots I saw were some of the fading baseline jumpers and a couple elbow jumpers where he double clutched it in.
