I'll bend many genres when I start this series, "The Obscure Album of the Day."
I'll bring to ISH, great albums released throughout the years (well, at least great to me) that didn't get the time of the day when it was released. But over time has become a cult classic (I know cult classic are films, but don't know what to call them for music, lol.)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/93/The_Family_LP.jpg
The first is a 1985 album released by the first group signed to Prince's Paisley Park imprint (I almost went with another group from this same label for the first installment, maybe in the future.) This band was called The Family, who were actually birthed from the ashes of The Time. Two original Time members, Jellybean Johnson and Jerome Benton are put in the groups. One of the recent Time members added after Jam/Lewis/Moir departed was St. Paul Peterson. he took lead vocals, Prince's girl Susan (Wendy's sister) and sax man Eric Leeds (Alan's brother.)
I discovered this record years ago goin' through my fathers old record crates. It's a unique brand of funk, classical orchestrations, R&B and pop. It charted for a few weeks on the R&B charts and was quickly forgot about. I quickly fell in love with it. Every track is great, and you my recall a popular Sin

This was a great record. I haven't heard or thought about it in ages. Good first choice for your first Obscure Album of The Day Thread.

My favorite Minneapolis band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M7q5Mn3-oM)
My favorite Replacement story is that when compact discs started replacing albums the band were appalled that Twin/Tone (their first label) was planning to release their early albums on CD. So they had a few drinks and stewed about it. Then had a few more drinks and then went over to Twin/Tone. They gave the receptionist some line about working on remixes, grabbed as many of the master tapes as they could find and went and threw them in the Mississippi. To which Paul expressed hope that Prince, who lived in a big purple house downriver, would see the tapes floating by like Moses, rescue them, play them, and reconsider his musical approach.

Here is another 80s' obscure album. But it's from the most famous music family ever. Michael lil brother / Janet's older brother, member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Jackson 5/Jacksons. Randy Jackson put out his first solo album (titled Randy & The Gypsys, I guess the Gypsys were the cats on the cover, whatever.)
One reason it might have failed, in 1989 5ive Jacksons records were on the shelves. A Jacksons brother record (2300 Jackson Street), and solo releases from Janet (Rhythm Nation), Jermaine (Don't Take It Personal) and Jackie's Be The One. All of them charted except for Randy's releases.
Randy's was signed to A&M Records, the same label sister Janet was on as she helped him secure a record deal ... about 10 years earlier Janet was featured on her first ever recording, another obscure Randy release, his first single titled Love Song For Kids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDnGgsZDFsc). I guess A&M's promotion was geared towards one Jackson, her's went on to be the best selling of the year while Randy's fell by the waist side. Although it was quoted by brother Jackie on the Donahue TV Show that Randy's record was better than Janet's.
This records is pure greatness. Industrial sounds, ,mixed with some of that new 'New Jack Swing' flavor and a few funk jams. Randy did most of this album on his own acting as Prince. Michael said he's he most talent musician in the family. Wile the J5 were on the road, he'd practice on the brothers instruments until he got it down better than them and would show the,

Love that "Screams of Passion" joint.
Used to love listening to that.
Love the abstract noises in that record.
Nice post.
So far we've got a side project from THE TIME, and one of the JACKSONS.
This is some obscure shit alright.

With Heavy D sadly in the news now, we have his timeless hip-hop music to listen too. But a few years back after 10 years of not releasing music and mainly acting in films and television, he released an album called Vibes. But this was a different Heavy, gone was hip-hop and in was reggae. He went back to his Jamaican roots for this one.
I was flipping the stations a few years back, landed on BET J (now Centric) and a video caught my ear (eyes.) I said to myself "man, this sounds good, I wonder who sings it he looks like Heavy D." After the video was over, I found out the song was called "Long Distance Girlfriend" and sure enough it was by Heavy D.
A lot of Heavy D fans don't even know he dropped an album in 2008, yet alone a reggae joint. IT didn't chart here in the states, but was a number 2 album in Jamaica.
Rest in Power Heavy D.

Shuggie Otis is the son of Jazz great Johnny Otis and should be a legend in his own right, but that's just how things go. He started his career at an early age playin with his pops and landed a gig with Alice Kooper at 15 playing on his album. He released three solo albums from 1970 to 1974 with this being is last (Inspiration Information.) His other 3 are just as obscure I just went with this one cause he experimented more than his others.
Inspiration is a great jazz/blues/funk/rock/rhythm and blues work-out were Sly Stones meets Jimi Hendrix meets Velvet Underground me his pops Johnny Otis. He experiments with different sounds including a drum machine, new to the game at that time.
It found a new following after it was remastered in 2001 (when I discovered it.)

Sly Stones meets Jimi Hendrix meets Velvet Underground me his pops Johnny Otis.
Not something I expected to read on ISH. Have you heard much Velvet Underground?
I hope Sly can get it together, he apparently just went into rehab. (http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2011/10/sly-stone-rehab-crack-cocaine-malibu) When I was in college I worked on a film gig that took me to a record studio and the engineer mentioned that Sly Stone recorded there recently. Actually they didn't too much recording because Sly just spent two week freebasing in the bathroom.

My first hip-hop album for this series. And since it's holiday season, let's get in the spirit with Mr. Make Em Say Ughh, Master P. Well, this was before he was sayin' ughh. This goes back to his first hip-hop home, the Bay Area of Richmod, California.
He really started to make a name for himself in the region in 1993. By early 94, he had released the Bay Area classic "The Ghettos Tryin To Kill Me." With his name and new found pull, he got his west coast brothern together to drop another classic and his first chart entry ever with West Coast Bad Boyz Vol 1: Anotha Level of the Game mid-94.
This record here "Master P Presents West Coast Bad Boyz: High Fo' XMas" was his first release after his success with the original WCBB. It was released in November just for the holiday season. But this went way under the rader, it was out for a few months, was quickly discontinued as P signed a deal with Priority early the next year.
Even No Limit fans don't know about this release as it wasn't even promoted in any previous No Limit releases. I think it just ended up in stores one day lol. The track Christmas in da Ghetto dates from 1992

Stairsteps: 2nd Resurrection
Second resurrection, when was their first right? This band (or group) is best known for the song that no one knows the artist who made it. The many times over covered "O-O-Child (Things are gonna get easier ...) That rack was named when they were called The Five Stairsteps. This family unit was discovered by Curtis Mayfield in their hometown of Chicago, Illinois and started out as young children in the mid 60 recording. Another famous young group of kids used to battle them right down the street from Chicago in Gary, Indiana.
Anyways, fast forward 10 years later after they had grown up, had their biggest hit with O-O-Child in 1970, and stopped recording for a while. They got back into it after Billy Preston recommended they get in touch with George Harrison. George signed them to his Dark Horse label and they got together cooking up this classic blend of Rhythm and Blues meets Jazz fusion meets I don't know what else. This album was influenced by the family recent following on the 5% Nation so add that to the mix of an already unique record and you have songs that you just can't skip over.
The first single was track 1, with help in production from Billy Preston, it was a minor hit. But no other singles scratched the charts, the album missed the billboards and they disband once again only to come back a few years later as the Invisible Mans Band.
Pasado, track 2 has to be one of the greatest song ever laid on wax, the cover of the Pockets tune. They outdid the original. Enjoy.

Walter 'JUNIE' Morrison: Suzie*Super*Groupie
Now this is a talented young man right here. He started out in the band The Ohio Players in the late 60s to early 70s, recording on classics like Ecstasy (youngins know it from Big and Jay Brooklyn's Finest) and The Funky Worm. Later on in the 70s, he would join the Parliament-Funkadelic crew on tracks like Not Just (Knee Deep) and Flashlight.
But in between those years, he released 3 albums on the Westbound label (same label as early Ohio Players and Funkadelic releases.) The album I'm gonna share is his 3rd and last release on that label before hooking up with George Clinton and the boys.
This record here is called Suzie Super Groupie and is one of the greatest things I've ever heard in my life, but don't just take my word for it, check it out. He plays all the instruments on the record. This album didn't chart on the Billboard 100 or R&B side either, no singles were released.

This is easily one of the greatest New Jack Swing albums ever released, yet no one has heard of it.
OF course, you will recognize his voice, he was one of the original members of the prominent New Jack group, GUY. His vocals could be heard on the radio heavily played track "You Can Call Me Crazy" and the closing song " My Business." He was revealed of his duties before the great debut album was released, but his vocals remained.
Already familiar with the sound, he went and got his own deal Tommy Boy. He released the album Help in 1989, but that's what he needed from his record label. One lonely video for the single "Rock Me Good" and an appearance on Soul Train did nothin, the album didn't chart on the pop side and not even on the R&B charts. But don't stop that from listenin to hs album, "The Sweat Drops" features Keith Sweat on vocals (who the label should have pushed was on the record, he was hot then ...) He went on to do production for artist like Ralph Tresvant, Bel Biv DeVoe and Christopher Williams but he was never really heard of again after the early 90s, shame on you Teddy Riley.
No joking, this is up there with the great NJS albums of the day like DOn't Be Cruel, Guy's Debut, Babyface's Tender Lover, Al B. Sure's In Effect Mode, ect.

This 1984 album is so smooth and free flowing, if it was recorded by a bigger name, would have made a splash in the world of music.
He was signed at a young age as a new up and coming singer to compete with the El DeBarge's of the world. When his solo career failed, he went to the backgrounds. He's been a writer, producer, arranger and instrumentalist for major artist of the 80s' and 90s' including Michael Jackson, Sting and Barry White.
This record had a few low end charting singles on the R&B charts but nothing major. Zhe album itself failed to reach any of the charts in June 1984. That month, albums from Prince, The Jacksons and the Time were out, and he was not a hit like those established acts.

Anna King: Back to Soul
In 1964, James Brown was about to unleash to the world this new type a music, this new type a groove. It was a 'brand new bag' (no pun) called funk music. That song would be called "Out of Sight" a smash hit which ushered in a new way to feel music. But, at that same time he was writing a producing an album (the had been producing many singles for artist as far back as 1959, but I guess he felt real good about Anna because he did a whole album with her) for one of his female artist.
This was not his first female artist or his most famous. The first was a young lady by the name of Bea Ford (ex-wife of Joe Tex, James most hated enemy/rival in the business!), Sugar Pie DeSanto, Yvonne Fair and a 17 year old by the name of Tammy Montgomery. She would latter be known as Tammy Terrell. His most famous females would be Vicki Anderson, Marva Whitney and Lynn Collins in the 70s.
But back to this album, this was one of the great albums for a female in soul music in 1964. You gotta realize, this was before Aretha Franklin was huge (no pun again, lol), Diana Ross hadn't yet had a hit with the Supremes, Patti Labelle was a mid-tier singer leading the Blue Bells. Etta James was around so that was about it. Dionne Warwick was doin' pop ballads.
Backed by James Brown and his Orchestra (and the Famous Flames on a few cuts in the background) this dropped in early 1964 and did not make a splash on the Billboard album charts. A few singles did dent the Hot 100 (the soul charts were suspended at this time.) "Baby, Baby, Baby" was a duet with Famous Flames founder Bobby Byrd and barley missed the top 50. Did the punchy horns, organ and the kick drum. But the second single released might be the most spectacular. This is basically a funk ballad in 1964. "If Somebody Told You" topped of at #67 before basically never being heard again by the new year (1965.) There are a few coves like "Night Time is the Right Time" "Come and Get These Memories" and the best "Tennessee Waltz." "If You Don't Think" is a cover also, from Tammi Terrell who did the previous year.
This is a high priced album for collectors if you can find it, though an import came out a few years ago.

Right around the time Michael Jackson was in LA prepping up one of his landmark albums "Thriller" there was a dude by the name of Alfonzo Jones tryin' to do the same thing, and I mean the same exact thing. Word has is that MJ himself was the man behind the Alfonzo character. And if you think about it, he had to be. Alfonzo had him down from the vocal styling to similar sounding records to the same pose on his album cover MJ had on Thriller ... more on that later.
The record came out the same year as Thriller, though I can't find any info on if it was released before or after Thriller. His voice is nice, but if Mike were singing these songs most would be hits. His voice is not as strong as MJs.
There is not one bad track on this underrated release. The two singles from this record were "Girl, You Are The One" and "Change The World." "Girl, You Are The One" is one of the best song on the record. It's so melodic and refreshing. "Change the World" is a nice ballad, but the best ballad on the album is "I Wanna Give You My Love ('Till You Scream)" amazing.
He does a great cover of Boz Scaggs hit "Low Down" and another cover not on the album, the O'Jays "Backstabbers." Maybe the best tracks are "Don't Stop This Feeling" "Action Speaks Louder Than Words" and "Ready For Your Love." The first track of this album even makes onto the film Penitentiary II.
Alfonzo was on the record label LARC Records distributed by MCA Records. Joe Jackson had a publishing company deal with LARC and MCA Records. La Toya was an artist on LARC/MCA. Clay McMurray produced this entire record. Clay was one of the Jackson 5 producers at Motown Records.
He released his last record in 1988 on the heels of MJ's Bad titled "Champion of Love" with another striking MJ pose on the cover.

This album was the opposite of popular. It was so the opposite, it was shelved at the last minute by his label, Blue Note Records and only one order was released in UK before it was quickly pulled. Only a small EP sampler was released in the US in 2007, "The Popular Machine."
Van Hunt had been around since the mid-90s as a songwriter-producer. His name to fame, "Hopeless" by Dionne Farris. He released his self titled debut in 2004 that got him a Grammy nomination and his follow up, 'On The Jungle Floor' in 200. None were very successful in sales, but he gained a large following for his material.
In 2007, he signed to Jazz label Blue Note, who he figured could market him better than Capitol Records. It didn't work, his album stay shelved and he'd end up leaving with nothing. But, he left a rare album named 'Popular.'
The first songs marked for releases were 'The Lowest 1 of My Desires' and 'Turn My TV On'. The first mentioned track in on some Terrance Trent D'Arby shit. Jammed that hard when I first heard it.
My favorites from this album have to be 'SNM (Sex & Magic)' It's so different. 'Blood' is just funky as hell. "Ur Personal Army' very trippy, love the synths in the vamps.
His ballads are his own. He plays them as if he's improving jazz chords and riffs but sings over them. He does so in 'There's Never a Good Time to Say Goodbye'. 'Ur a Monster' is very Sly Stonish. The last 2 tracks are very trippy.
He finally got back with a label and in late 2011, dropped "What Were You Hoping For" which is more in vein with 'Lowest 1 of My Desires' than the funk/soul he releases. He's currently working on a release.

OP has mostly been posting motown-ish type of stuff it seems, so I'll contribute with something that is on the opposite end of the spectrum.

likin it. Tho when it comes to jazz I'm more of a Charles Mingus kinda guy. I like my music to be wild and chaotic.
