He led his team to a title in '58... versus the greatest sports dynasty ever..... He dropped 50 points and grabbed 25 boards in the 7th game, one of the best Finals performance ever...his offensive abilities were amazing and wasn't bad on the glass either....

His peak was worthy too...... Pettit was consistently high in the MVP votings, had even a 20/20 season and even one close 30/20 season as well. Quick, mobile, possibly the top shooter at the time. He was money on that 18 footer and was sharp at the line...........

He was consistently in the NBA All-First Team... he has earned many praise from his peers.....

I mean look at this resume, he is #11-#14 of all time worthy..... think about how significant he was for the sport and so on aswell..

If it wasnt for that Bill Russell Celtic team, Bob Pettits resume could believe it or not end up as Bill Russells did....

Could he be so underrated because he played in the 50s or something? Whats the deal here? Why is he so underrated?

A little off topic, but Russell was actually drafted by the Hawks but was traded to the Celtics. Could you imagine how dominant a front line of Russell/ Pettit might have been? If Red was not smart enough to make that trade, we might have been speaking of the Hawks dynasty of the 50s-60's as opposed to the Celtics dynasty.

He's not underrated at all. Just not mentioned so often. Part of this has to do with the fact that there is little to none footage of him playing. A
From what little footage there is, you can clearly see how good this guy was (considering the era he played in).
I was surprised by his great midrange shooting. Most knowledgeable NBA fans rank him top 15.. top 20 at worst.

Why? Because they missed some layups? Rewatch this years NBA finals and you'll see the same thing. Here's just one example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLfq64Hz1wI. Countless players brick easy shots and miss layups in today's NBA.

So, his 50-point game-seven exists on film, right?
Yeah ,but it

It's sad that we could never really assess how good these early greats are because of the lack of footage. All we have are incomplete stats and accolades but they don't tell the whole story.

Pettit is one of my favorites. A real professional. Hard working and determined. He was not very athletic, but just a hungry player. High motor. He's talked about how he had to lift weights to get stronger after his first year. He's talked about how he would improve his ball handling if he could go back. An all time great.

I'm sure there will be those that criticize his numbers due to era, but even in his LAST season, in the mid-60's, he put up a 22.5, 12.4 rpg, .429 (in a league that shot .426), .820 season.

George Yardley: The disastrous team would have been St. Louis if Russell had never been traded to the Celtics. They might never have lost a game, what with him and Pettit on the same time. ... Had he and Russell played on the same team, it would have been outrageous.

Pettit is one of my favorites. A real professional. Hard working and determined.

The fact that he won 4 ASG MVP's (in 11 appearances) says it all. He never cared who he had to face, he just went at it.

He really doesn't get his due. Unlike Mikan, who played in a mostly white 50's, Pettit held his own against guys like Bill Russell, Wilt, West, Baylor and Oscar. He was the top PF of his era, and had he come even 5-10 years later, would be talked about along with his contemporaries.

gotta love that there are two threads on the first page and each have Pauk ranking Pettit completely differently depending on the agenda he was trying to push at the time :oldlol: :oldlol:

11-14 worthy vs Top 20 (highest possible 16)
