I think every reality show is not 100% real. There will always be scripted confrontations and scenarios set up to be interesting on TV. I dont doubt many of them are real in the sense that what they are doing is their real jobs. But all the drama and stuff seems really scripted at times. I havnt watched all those shows but Gold Rush drama looks really scripted and Storage Wars as well.

Every single one. Nobody is gonna act the same when there is a camera on them as they will when there's no cameras on them. They're always gonna add some drama, try to be funnier, say and do things they wouldn't normally do, look cooler, look sexier etc.

Only way to get a legit reality show would be via hidden cameras cuz there's just no way for people to be "real" in the spotlight. That's why I always think its funny when people who watch reality TV shows make fun of wrestling fans for watching something that's fake. All TV is fake in some way. Only difference is wrestling doesn't try to hide it

all of them

I have worked on two different reality shows and they were both scripted to some degree.

Here are what I know:

Storage Wars uses real buyers who have their legit places and know-hows to dump their craps for money. It is dramatized for TV though.

Thanks for the info on Storage Wars. The last time I went to visit my family my little brothers were in the process of watching the entire series. It seemed ridiculous and I didn't actually sit down to watch any. It has influenced one of my brothers to move on from his goal of becoming a teacher and instead strive to become storage units.

They more stumping task would be to conjure up the ones that aren't fake

they supposedly recently uncovered some storage unit with super old coins valued at like $500k but bought the unit for $1k....

Storage Wars is fake imo. Sometimes they add a couple of outside bidders in the mix but they never win.

how about the real world vs road rules shows?

they seem pretty legit to me.

real housewives is 100% real...

Nope. Sure, them hanging out and being money wasting whores is real, but the drama isn't.

I don't think there is a such thing as a 100% real reality show.

As for those Ghost Hunter-type of shows, they're faker than plastic tits.

Those are some of the worst offenders.

Again, cast members are selected to create conflict of sorts, producers encourage certain behavior and some of it is scripted. And naturally, the casts members act the part and for the most part, act differently than they would in their non-tv life.

And even if that's not the case with some of these shows, the editing makes it more dramatic/appealing. They'll take hundreds of hours and air what they think will be more entertaining.

yah, but i dont think the real world road rules a scripted.

sure they supply them with free alcohol to purposely get them ****ed up and cause drama. but besides that i think its just shows what people will do to win money.

Yes it is... what part isn't real? the show might encourage them to go to the same events or put events on for them but thats as fake as housewives gets.....

All Of Them.

Yep. You do realize that 1/4 mile behind those starving castaways on Survivor there's a food service truck, right?

Those shows are nothing but vehicles for attention whores to try and stretch their 15 minutes. Even worse are the nitwits that watch and give them their wish.

The question should be 'to what extent are these shows faked?' Auction Hunters looks to me to be the least real of those shows. I'm not sure to what extent Storage Wars is faked. As for Destination Truth, they seem to overreact to everything to build as much drama as they can. Ghost Hunters has been caught faking stuff. For Gold Rush, I've heard that they did some retakes for certain scenes (like going over the bridge during season 1). I haven't watched the others.

i love that line, even if it's not really true! it's from this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/420tzp/serious_people_who_have_been_guests_on_reality/), which has been an absolute bonanza of information about what goes on behind the scenes of reality shows.

i guarantee that i will wind up reading all 3000 comments or whatever it's up to now. don't blame me... you've been warned. :D

i feel sheepish in admitting it, but that was pretty damn hilarious and i could easily see myself getting hooked.

IIRC from the insiders thread, that was one of the shows that was indeed completely scripted and acted out.

Most home buying shows are completely fake. Think about it: buying a home should be one of the most careful decisions you make in your life. A TV show/film crew isn't going to risk people getting cold feet.

To be on House Hunters, you must already be in escrow. So one of the three houses you go to see is the house you've already bought. The other two are completely staged, and some aren't even for sale. One person who was interviewed about being on the show said one of the houses she went to see was really just her sister's house (which wasn't on the market), and it was really awkward because she had to think of negative things to say about the house to justify why she didn't "pick it."

Property Brothers follows the same formula. The couple on the show is already in escrow on one of the 2 fixer uppers that Drew "shows" them. Jonathan is a real contractor, but does pretty much none of the work. A different crew comes in off camera and does 99% of the work.

Love It or List It is also completely staged. Both possible endings are filmed (i.e. the homeowners choosing to stay and choosing to leave) and the producers decide which ending gets aired (based on which was better filmed, or which better fits the narrative they have been building, or which acts as a better "shock"). Homeowners rarely if ever actually move, because they were always planning to remodel their current home and basically just allowed a film crew to be there for it.

Extreme Makeover Home Edition is mostly accurate. One was built two blocks down the street from my old house. They do solicit volunteers from the community to help, they do work around the clock, and the house is actually built in a week. However, Ty and all of his cronies are basically never there. They do literally none of the actual work. Also, the "move that bus" sequence is completely staged and often filmed multiple times before the director gets the shot he wants. The house is also often sold within a few years, because the family often can't afford it (even in cases where the mortgage is paid for, there's still taxes, utilities, maintenance and upkeep, etc.). I never actually met the family, even though they lived two blocks away, but it was a mom and two kids and word around the neighborhood was that the mom hated the house.

Jesus what does the audience who gets hooked onto that show think? That camera crews are set up all over town and they somehow mic'd everyone who's about to get towed in secrecy!?

Every 2 seconds is a jump cut to a different camera crew. The choreography of the camerawork alone gives away every moments authenticity :lol

*EDIT* OMG JUST SAW THE HIT AND FALL

storage wars had people say it's faked
that restoration had things exposed with items changing and being bought from else where then presented as their own work
pawn stars give items and scripts to people to try to "sell" and pay like $100 for it. People have talked about that who've been on the shown and they had one segment where a guy from a local music store sold them a rare guitar but the guitar was still for sale in the store that guy owned and that guy showed up on a later episode to appraise a guitar for them.

Don't know how you would fake deadliest catch. It's clear at times they are building tension and over reacting to things, or re using footage to make you think they are having a tough time but the actual goings on would be hard to fake.

I recommend you watch this 5-minute clip of him. It deals mainly with business, but it's highly motivational.
