Drake, Wale, Cole, Big Sean, Mac Miller, Cudi Wiz are all selling better than the new rappers that came out the past few years.
These are the new faces of hip hop, so you all best get use to it. On top of that we have the established artist already like Kanye, Lupe and Ross putting the music industry on notice.
On top of that, we have Princess RiRi on our side.
Hip Hop right now is the genre that running sh1t right now.

All I've ever said was, he's not that good of a rapper compared to others. I didn't say he wasn't a good artist. I like Biggie better as a rapper, but even I know Pac is the better artist because he talked about more things and was a better song maker.
but he's still not better than Drizzy in rapping or making good songs though.

And people listing them as better rappers than drake? They dont write rhymes so thats out. What is it? Flow? E wasnt producing really.....he might have gotten a credit or two but he wasnt a straight up producer. He didnt write his rhymes. The rhymes written fro him were mostly garbage. And his flow was just him talking for the most part. He wasnt much better than a silk the shocker flow wise.
But hes better than drake?
Im old enough to remember when nwa was big. Easy was NEVER a good rapper. Funny at times but thats it. He was the birdman of the 80s. A businessman on records rapping to have his face out there.

And I agree with kblaze on this one. He is more of a hybrid rapper/singer. To compare him with other guys of older times isn't the best comparison cuz thsre aren't many hybrids out there. But unlike some other rappers coming out now, Drake ain't all hype (cole, mac main, cudi).
Lets remember. People are paying for his CD. They could easily find it online and download it for free so it says something that they're going out to buy it in this generation we live in. You cant say the same for movies.

Certainly a lower percentage of Twilight fans are Drake fans.
But every Drake fan that I personally know would indeed classify as at least being interested in the Twilight... thing.
And sure he's talented it's impossible to get that far without a little bit of talent. But more so than a shit ton of other artists? No. More than struggling artists? No. More than some guy I know? No.

I was surprised by how wack most of fat joe albums were but every now and then he puts up a great verse.
Fat Joe doesn't get enough respect in terms of his raw rapping ability. I probably overrate the dude, but I think it's fair to say he's actually underrated by the masses.
He went from being a well respected bronx hero to *hinting* a mainstream switch (with Pun's 'help' (ghost-writing) Joe dropped Don Cartagena, where he comes with his best material (especially lyrically/verbally) to date).
Yes, then eventually taking things full-blown commerical at the turn of the century. I guess you could make the argument his quality of music took a hit, but I wouldn't exactly say he's 'wack' or his spitting ability is rubbish. Not at all.

I wasn't trying to get a rise out of anybody. In my heart to heart, I'll rather listen to Drake than 2Pac, it has nothing to do with eras or anything. I'll take Cube, Mos, Nas, Jay and Tribe Called Quest over most cats from this era. But as far as overall, I think this era is better than any other rap era beside the Golden Era. You can tell alot of these new artist aren't just doing it for monetary reasons or for a quick come up. I think they genuinely love this hip hop sh1t. They enjoy themselves in the studio and try to find ways to better themselves.

LOL, Powergrlove. Dude, let's be clear here. First of all, Drake isn't even what you would call a 'rapper' - he's a singer. Secondly, he ain't 'murdered' a verse (none that I've heard anyway). Perhaps you meant to say artist, and yes I'm sure that's what you were getting at.
In this case, we're not talking apples to apples. If you want to say Drake is a good singer, then OK, that's a more valid point. Even still, I think the dude sounds like trash through-and-through.
Let us look at your points though. Explain how Drake is creative? Dude walked into a booth and starting yapping. Flow, see creative. Consistency, OK now you make a point. Drake is consistent. Consistently trash. They say one man's trash is another man's treasure, but in this case, one man's trash is another tool's treasure.

Man PHX I feel what you're saying cuz you'd have to just WANT to turn cheek to some of the more traditional new talent such as J Cole, Big KRIT, Freddie Gibbs, Drake, etc etc. They do their thing and it has appeal and a specific purpose to diff factions but ppl are not going to forget the type of sound and style they grew familiar with.
Your bolded list prolly just ruffled some feathers bcuz it makes some great artists appear overlooked when albums were obviously done with much more cohesion than this more manufactured style of putting a bunch of songs together with featured 'hot' artists whose sounds don't have much chemistry. They end up not really accomplish as much of a statement as an album that is strung together for a more singular purpose. I mean you gunna tell me that The Fix by Scarface doesn't deserve to be thought of as one of the greats?
Drake eludes emotion but not in the same raw way that earlier dudes like the aforementioned Scarface, dudes like AZ, Kool G Rap, Raekwon, Jadakiss, etc did. For a lot of people like myself, my love for rap/hip hop began as an outlet for an aggressive and more carnal form of artistic expression. Not to say ppl try to act hard when they aren'y but I guess some real intense tracks get you zoned the same way dudes dig Heavy Metal. Jus a raw form of expression.
Drake's emotions obviously don't pander to those rap fans who are familiar with a more gritty execution. Sure he's clever and has some skill. He's very good at making a 'song'. 'Songs' can be very amateur and pop-sounding so it appeals to not that dark side of the psyche where a hardened individual like Styles P might be able to get at.
I love women and being charming with them but I'll be honest, the dude needs to chill on pandering to this crowd of generic b!tches who think they're special . :lol He's done his thing and made money from it, so show the lifelong fans where your art can go NOW.

you have your opinion, I have mines(even if you are being objective). I haven't seen or heard any range from any of these "singers" that is impressive. I find Drake's singing better. Period.
you might like him more, but to say he is a better singer is wrong. all those singers listed can hit a full range of notes, on command. drake cannot do that.
liking someone is different from that someone being objectively better.

I can't agree with the arguments that rank Reasonable Doubt so high. Blueprint is by far a superior album, and even at that, more along the lines of a 4.5 mic-ish level. While Jay is highly consistent, and has dropped some real bangers over his career, he has yet to deliver what I would claim a legit 'classic' album entirely.
To be fair, many use the term classic a bit loosely. When we're talking a masterpiece (which is a stronger term), it seems that term can be overused too. I reserve those labels for the mega elite albums such as Illmatic, Liquid Swords, Ready to Die, It Takes A Nation, Paid In Full (very select few).
I would even argue an album such as Moment of Truth > Reasonable Doubt. A lot of really does boil down to a personal opinion, but there are quite a few heads that would ? why RD is so high on some lists, whereas an argument such as why Illmatic is so high, would be rap blasphemy.

Not at all.
I would never consider myself a Fat Joe fan but this is nasty:

^^^^ What Lamar said, Drake has somehow found what rapping ability to use in today's music, and that is poppy beats with lots of singing(well you can't really call it singing because he is really not) and corny punchlines, a rapper who uses any category's that I name cannot really qualify as a technical rapper, what I mean by that is a rapper who is able to create certain flow patterns and is able to construct well-structured rhymes over a beat that suits their rapping style, all I see in this guy Drake is that he doesn't really care about all that stuff, as evident to all the poppy songs that he has, he might sound good on them, but as time progresses you are going to get tired of this guy and maybe ask him to change his rapping ability or flow, but you know whats going to happen? He is not going to be able to do it, why? because he is by no means a "Versatile" rapper, all the songs that I hear from him are all rather the same, the only reason I think people like him nowadays is because today's music and the listeners like hearing watered-down music.

This is probably the best post in this thread. Mainstream rap is relatable to those who aren't familiar with crime, violence, drug trafficking, etc in the ghetto. Rap doesn't have to be strictly about that---that association is almost outdated. Rap music per se has the capacity to be much more, to encompass more experiences and purposes. Drake might channel his emotions too much and his singing is downright annoying at times, but his flow is nice and he's creative compared with other popular rappers today.

Of course, there will always be cross-sectional sales. I do not acknowledge hip-hop/rap anymore, due to the lack of creativity. Majority of the artists have ghost writers and are sell-outs. They'll produce albums that are more in line with mainstream music, rather then sticking to the essence of lyricism.
You have to be really young, to not see this shift from the 90's to now.
I mean Drake selling this much in a week? The guy wouldn't even be considered an underground rapper back in the day; he has little to no skill when it comes to rhyming. What music are you listening to?
I'm getting sick of the arrogance young people have these days; they don't know a damn thing about music in the 90's yet they want to act like it's similar because their icon is from their own generation.

if anyone says drake isnt talented then they are just jealous as shit.
there is a reason someones album is the 3rd biggest sale of the year, and it isnt because he is garbage.
the album is great.
Drake is so talented at what he does. Again, i'll keep saying it he is the most versatile hip/hop R &B artist since Eminem. He really can do it all and he has shown that display of talent from Marvins's Room compared to his Up All Night. Never can I recall an artist with that much versatility, since again Eminem.
With that being said, the reason that "You" rap purest can't stand him is because he doesn't appeal to the hardcore rap fan. Drake is smart, he knows the way to make money is to appeal to the younger teenage girl between (12-14) years. If you win that demographic, your going to get a big pay day in main stream music.
and his 660k albums sold its first week shows it.

I mean you gunna tell me that The Fix by Scarface doesn't deserve to be thought of as one of the greats?
I fully understand why my list ruffled feathers, that was my intention. He was trolling with his list so I countered.
I started out listening to the hard shit like you did but I cant take rappers seriously if they cant express a broad range of emotions. Flat rappers are just caricatures, I can only listen to you brag or be hard for so long before I just turn it off. I prefer a mix. Pac was really great at this.
I love women and being charming with them but I'll be honest, the dude needs to chill on pandering to this crowd of generic b!tches who think they're special . :lol He's done his thing and made money from it, so show the lifelong fans where your art can go NOW.
You gotta give him time to progress, Eminem is rapping about the same shit that he was dishing out in 99' still he's loved all over this site. I do agree though, but it wasnt as bad as "Fancy". That shit killed me.
P.S. Reasonable Doubt is one of the greatest hip hop/rap albums ever to me. That shit had a collective purpose and it's scope was pretty wide for a dude's first album. Not all Hypnotiq fun and matching belts an shit to make shallow bitches moist
Definitely a great album, but I dont think its the classic people are making it out to be. I dont even have it in my top 3 for 96. I prefer It was written,Stakes is High, All Eyez on Me over it. The Score was nice too.

1996 was a major critical year for rap music. You're exactly right; RD isn't amongst the best of the best that year, too many other real bangers in that 12 month span... wayyyyyy too many.
IMO, hip-hop/rap's second best year music/sound/culture wise. What year does LOJ believe was # 1? I'll keep it secret for now. The rap gods would be disappoint if I told ya'll.
PowerGlove, I can appreciate your tastes for your age, and you're not really all that doo doo in these discussions, but you still have plently of homework to do. Keep at it.

You have to also take into consideration that it was a different time for 'sales' in general.
You have the internet now as a massive force in putting your sounds out there, and promotion. YouTube, iTunes, electronic media.
Back in 96 and before, it wasnt exactly huge, or practically non-existent.
The problem with people now, is that they judge an artists success on record sales, and confuse that with actual worth as their musical content.
Any tom, d*ck, or harry can go out there now, and with enough financial backing, and a good PR team, they could also sell a good chunk of records. Just LOOK at some of these artists today. Its CLEARLY the most horrible era for "hip-hop/rap" music.
But this is all perspective. Drake to me, has talent, but really isnt THAT damn good. I believe his PR team does a great job at putting him out there, and making you believe he is more iconic than his content would suggest.

I don't know what you have, or haven't listened to yet.
I'll throw one at you that not everyone will stand the fu*k up and say HELL YEAH! classic banger! ... but listen to Cypress Hill's Temples of Boom III... superbly produced album that is very street level and back then, was a real banger for the time it dropped (I think very late 1995 ish?)...
A personal favorite of mine... I might overrate, but overall hard to argue it's not a musical gem. In fact, I'm gonna dig that shit up now, put in my system...
*edit*
If you aren't listening on a high quality system or headphones, might not 'bump' the same, the audio was not mastered correctly... dont know why Muggs did it this way...

Ice T? DMc? Easy E? Ra the Rugged man? Doctor dre? better at rapping than Drake?
Yea....thats just hating over fame there.
Drake is a singer/rapper kinda hybrid...but hes sure as hell rapping better on Aston Martin Music than Easy E talking about crusing down the street in his 64 slapping hoes. Or Dre getting rhymes written for him and not even rapping them well.
Not sure that Ra the Rugged Man makes better music but he's certainly a more talented rapper. Uncommon Valor is greater than anything Drake can even begin to even dream of rapping.
Drake is slowly becoming the LeBron of rapping though; getting underrated because people love hating on whatever is popular.
Shoulda seen all the Cole stuff back on SOHH when he just had the come up and warm up. Every song posted people were going nuts over; claiming he never put out a bad song. Sure enough, fast forward a year and he's "trash" according to plenty of those same idiots.

You obviously don't listen to rap do you?
