I've got a similar TV watching conundrum with all my shows closing out for the year.

Maybe American Horror Story if it's available On Demand.

Anyone know how Homeland is? I know I can get that On Demand.

A coworker of mine watches HOMELAND and says its awesome..also i read alot of Bill Simmons Grantland and they have a weekly Homeland review.. Im a simmons junkie and he always references the Wire so i guess you could say thats why i started watching it.. but to answer your question , from what ive read and heard..its a great show. I usually have a habit of reading the episode review after ive watched an episode. Helps me put things together

great choice. my advice: take it slow. it takes a while to get used to its pace. rewatch some episodes even. it's probably not going to sell you on the pilot but keep watching. i didn't get super intrigued until about episode 7 and beyond that, i was hooked. prepare for greatness.

I'm a Simmons junkie as well, and I've read a few of the Homeland recaps, which seems rediculous seeing as I don't even watch the show, but I still find them amusing. Particularly the one he wrote filling in for Seppinwall. His step by step analysis of stuff always exagerates the rediculousness of stuff. It's like when he does his minute by minute draft blogs. Always amusing.

When watching the wire you have to remember that there are many layers to the show. It's a cop and street dealer show on one level. On another level it's about corruption in our system. On another level it shows how institutions affect and mold individuals. And on yet another level it's about retribution and the strengths and weaknesses of individuals.

Or just remember the famous Stringer Bell quote: "There's games beyond the f*ckin game."

Good luck and enjoy!

The beginning of The Wire was a little slow for me. LOTS of characters to get used to, no actors, that I knew of before. Baltimore/drug slang to decipher. But once it starts rolling and get its hooks into you, it's the best series ever on American TV. (At least the first 4 seasons were.)

I think my record was 6 or 7 episodes. It was a super cold winter Saturday and we had two discs of the Wire from Netflix, so my wife and I made a pot of chili and settled in before the TV. The original thought was to just watch a couple. About 9PM the last episode ended we were in the middle of that great third season and I said "The video store is still open? Want to go?" and we went and got the next disc.

I chuckle at people getting into The Wire extremely late. What were you doing in life to miss one of the best TV shows in history? Its not like it didnt garner any attention either. Must have served in the military or something. :confusedshrug:

Homeland I havent got into. I'll watch some of an episode then stop. Luckily I have On Demand where I can watch it. I have one question about the show from stuff I've watched BUT I figure that will or has been answered and I just need to watch the recent episodes or continue watching for my answer to come

I was a guy who got into a late, for much of the reason listed above. The beginning was a little slow. And more than that, I was just having trouble keeping track of the sprawling cast on a week to week basis. And the language was a little thick for me.

It wasn't until I could see it in a short viewing format, on DVD, where I was watching 2 to 4 episodes a night, that I could really immerse myself in it and get really hooked. I watched the whole series over a couple weeks. Then did it again a few months later.

i think it's hard to catch onto early on because nothing is really explained to you. in most shows, the viewer can tell when the writer runs into a wall of how to convey a major upcoming plot point. it winds up getting inserted into the dialogue of a character who will probably sound awkward spelling out for the audience something that isn't in his usual repertoire. and then you get kinks in the start to finish character arcs that are pretty much the make or break factor of any show.

with The Wire, you get none of that. in most scenes, it almost feels as if you're descending into the room mid-sentence. so for the first few episodes, especially for us boring honkies, it takes a while to first decipher the language and then figure out how it applies to the overall story. and eventually it becomes easy, for me it was ep 5 or so, but for a while it can be a bit of a pain.

the other side of the coin is the payoff of 'getting' it, which is why everybody calls it the best show ever. along with the way it toys with ideas, relationships, morality, careers, etc. but the common thread is that seemingly effortless dialogue that almost sounds like a foreign language until you plug yourself into it.

yeah... if you remember I was talking about the wire a couple months back. started it three months ago. (disc by disc through Netflix) I just finished season 4.
I was lost in life for about 10 years just f'ing up, slinging Meth .. doing time and just kinda "out there" for a while.
There was a point in life when literally years that went by on the streets where I never even watched a t.v. once. Not a show.. not the news.. nothing. It was crazy.. I had never even watched a mini-series or even knew what one was until about 2 years ago.. (same goes with a message board.. never knew something like this even existed until I was like 30yrs old. I really was a newbie of newbies when I came around. took a minute to learn how it goes around here..all in all it's a pretty cool thing when you're bored..

anyway the Wire..
season 1:pimp: :applause:
season 2:bowdown: :pimp:
season 3::pimp: :applause:
season 4::pimp: :banana:

LOVED season 2 by the way.. (1 & 3 too..
very hard to choose the best season.

I have season 5 disc 1 right now..
kind of on-hold due to currently re-watching the 13 episodes of Spartacus:Blood and Sand(f*ckin so good by the way

but yeah.. the Wire has been really praised on this site.
and rightfully so..
It Is So Great

Yeah, definitely watch the first 4 seasons. The first four seasons feel like real observed truth...the show is produced by ex Baltimore Cop and ex Baltimore news reporter. The cop became a teacher after he retired. Those seasons seem like hard lessons learned. The 5th season has a false note when ---not to give anything away--- the cop starts to trick the media.

One of the keys to why the Wire is so good is the creators' belief that you don't give up on people or just completely write them off. Never has poverty appeared so real on American TV. Never have the crooks been given just as much emotional depth as the cops. It reminded me of the best parts of Catholicism and I was not surprised to learn as I just googled him that Ed Burns the cop/teacher went to Catholic schools through college and studied philosophy at Loyola. where a good catholic is required to

To feed the hungry
To give drink to the thirsty.
To shelter the homeless.
To clothe the naked.
To visit prisoners
To visit the sick.
To bury the dead.

This was a guy who could have had a comfortable professional life and chose a life of service as a cop and then a teacher. David Simon, the reporter has also made it his life's work to tell the stories of the poor and forgotten.

Well in the Year 2003 I was in 8th grade so I wasnt to big on watching shows and what not. Over the past year ive been really dedicated to watching show after show and picking up every good show I hear about. I remember hearing about the ending of the Sopranos and in my head i was like "Whats the big deal" but now that i finished it ITS A HUGE DEAL LOL. but yeah im really good at catching up to shows.. my technique is to watch one show on DVD's at home and watch a seperate show seperately..usually one i can watch at work during lunch break (stream on my iphone.) I got Dexter on my iphone for now but once im done with it im gonna start Boardwalk Empire ..etc etc. All running of course with me watching the Wire.

lol you sound exactly like me. I caught up with Dexter winter 2010/2011. Then I started watching The Sopranos. I had a choice between Mad Men, Entourage, and The Wire, but went with Entourage to change it up a bit with a comedy. Loved it, especially the first 5 seasons. I highly recommend you start Entourage then switch to The Wire. You really need to sit down and take in everything that's going on. Brilliant show.

I would seriously pay to get the wire erased from my memory just so I could watch it again with no knowledge of the show.

I've seen a lot of tv shows but most of them don't even come close. There are so many subplots, characters etc and all of those are fully developed,I dunno how that guy above can say that it's all bland.

Hell, they could probably skip all the cops, gangstas & politics stuff and just do a show on Omar robbing drug dealers and it would still kick ass.

Just started watching this on HBO GO a few months ago (which is awesome by the way and everyone needs to take advantage of it). Love the show. I'm in the middle of the 3rd season. I got to admit though. I felt the 2nd season wasn't anywhere near as good as the 1st. I felt the Barksdale/Stringer angle was way better then the whole stevedore angle, but when sh*t got crazy at the end it was pretty awesome. 3rd season is awesome too.

Omar was the pretty obvious choice for fav character however at the end of the series i came quite fond of Bodie and Slim Charles lol and Stringer Bell too. Bodie was a soldier to the end.. they way he died forshadowed that whole chess game explanation back in season 1. he was a soldier who gave up what he believed in by Season 4 cause a new breed of boss (Marlo) came in and just started killing people ..just to kill. Slim Charles was like a paid hitman. Loyal, but you gotta give him a reason to run with you. Very Blackwater ish type character. And Stringer bell.. tragic but he had the right idea..his story reminds me of kanye west's line . "Even if you in a benz, you still a niga ..in a coupe".

What omar editing?

Won't watch Homeland based on principle. It's about a hero that might be part of Al Quada? Do I have that right?

 Way to propagandize the nation with more BS terrorism. Even if its a well done show, I won't watch it.........propaganda. Al Quada is a fiction......creation of the CIA.

As for the Wire, never watched because I don't want to watch shows about inner city crime and all that garbage. That's a world I want to escape, not immerse myself in it. Seems like a show for rich white people to watch from the comfort of their suburban 2 car garbage house, so they can be entertained by the realism of black people in the inner city, a world they never have and never will come close to. That was my perception, anyway.

But I keep hearing it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o good from everyone that's ever crossed a TV while The Wire was in its path, that I guess I'll just have to give it a shot. Torrents, here i come.......

There's no way you'll let yourself like a show you already have all these generalizations for, or at least not a show like this. you'll nitpick the sh!t out of it, and every scene will reinforce your preconceived ideas about it.

It's the best show ever made. Literally I was jerking off to the entire episode the entire team with my release just at the end of the episode. It was THAT good. My lord. It's such a commentary on the society we live in....it's so deep.

Lots of black people, though. Couldn't they throw in a few asians, maybe some more hispanics.....get alittle cultural diversity going. I mean, who wants to see THAT many black people at one time, am I right? :confusedshrug: ..........uh oh...........

It's a good thing The Wire is just fictional. Can you imagine if there were that many black people with all those problems in real life? Whew........what a mess that would be........its just a TV show.

are you serious? All of America's inner cities everywhere have these problems breh. if at the end of the show you don't want to donate to charity, reach out to kids, speak to addicts, protest the system, and have empathy for all the disenfranchised ghetto youth then you didn't fully get the point of the series.

LOL good one, dude. I like your sarcasm.

America is a great place. We are the richest country on earth. Clearly, a rich nation wouldn't have people live like that. But its a good fictional story though. I can see stuff like that happening in other countries though. America, we take care of our own.

The Wire is the greatest television show of all time in my humble opinion.

i've just started the wire and i am struggling. it is alright and i'm only up to episode 4 but i'm just not getting it yet? is this a bad sign? i want to like it but the pacing so far seems pretty slow and the characters haven't really been introduced that well.

there's a lot of smaller things happening. it's honestly one of those shows that you have to pay attention to because it will reveal itself slowly. there's so many lines that are either repeated in a different way later or end up being pivotal when you just never think much of it. is the script and acting at least keeping you interested? because it gets better...

they introduce a lot of characters at first but they really only glance over them and are only really hitting the tip of the iceberg. the pacing may be slow to you but if anything, it took me a bit of time to catch up on the lingo. once you see the greater scheme of things, the pacing will pick up real fast.

just a primer so far. lots of build up. most of the main characters are dynamic and grow or regress in one way or another.

if you're expecting an action packed, bang 'em up cop thriller...this ain't it. i guess that's a legit criticism you can have of the show. while it did have a few action scenes, they were few and far between. that's just not what this show is about.

so far all you've seen is bunk and mcnulty being 'beat cops' at the moment but you also have gotten a peak at barksdale and his crew. you've seen some of the street level re-up stuff and the surveillance. oh and you were just introduced to the one omar little. trust me when i say this...he will not be forgotten. the rest of the cast gets fleshed out as time goes on.

so ya, keep watching. i don't think i became semi-hooked until the end of season 1. by season 2, i was saying 'damn, this is a really good show'. season 2 is pretty underrated btw. by season 3, i said, 'well, this is probably going to end up being one of my favorite series' ever'. then season 4 came around, tied that shit up real nice and solidified that thought. the low points in this series still ended up being really good imo.

I've seen many people say that they didn't really become invested in the story many episodes into the first season, but I never got that. The quality of the first couple of episodes isn't lower than the rest of the show, and there is already a lot of significant stuff going on.

It's like a novel in that respect. Of course you go further down the rabbit hole as you go along, but a quarter into the story you'll know whether you like it or not.

i was getting into it by the end of season 1, but season 2 has taken a massive step back. i'm up to ep 9 now and it is finally starting to move along, the problem i had with it is that they broke everything up and spent the first 5 or 6 episodes putting everyone back together again (it makes sense logically but it was just tedious at times). but i honestly don't care about these dockyard workers. lamest criminal organization ever lol. but i'm pushing on, i keep hearing good things about season 3 and 4.

I just binged watched the show to the end of season 4.

Amazing show.

I am surprised this show isnt more controversial. It has some of the most negative depictions of black people I have ever seen.

Especially season 4. The kids and their parents :biggums:

Michael's mom and namond's mom.

It has quite a wide range of depictions, that's how life is in the ghetto for crack addicts it's not a lie.

You could argue that it took black lives more seriously than almost ever show that was ever on TV.

Did you not sympathize with the black kids who were born to parents like that?

Even the junkies and drug dealers were not one dimensional.

That;s how it is. Because of their situation, not because they're black. They're black in a drug epidemic or part of the criminals around it. It's not the cosby show.

Kinda surprised you think like this. Its just realistic, and they don't act like everyone is like Michael's mom or Namond's mom. But those people do exist. And its the inner city where drug dealers dominate and drug addicts are running wild. Of course the depictions are going to be negative. But with that being said, you still see that there are still a lot of redeeming qualities of these people but unfortunately they were just born into the wrong situation.

The Wire is so intricate and good that I am watching it all over again, and its still interesting to me.

I'm not sure right now but I used to travel a lot for work and yes, there are really awful areas in Baltimore.
