View Full Version : Shaq sucks as an on-air personality

GovernmentMan

I don't know why anybody thought he would be like Barkley.

Barkley is a natural. He's naturally charismatic, boisterous, goofy, and loud. Everything he says is golden

Shaq mumbles and his voice is nigh-inaudible. He has to consciously make a joke to be funny.

Shaq's not spontaneous. Always felt like his comedy was planned. Barkley is just naturally a big, fun personality.

I think Shaq has a very friendly, entertaining and enjoyable personality.

He is also naturally funny like Barkley (albeit not all the time).
I will definitely enjoy watching him on TNT or wherever else he shows up.

He doesn't have the greatest speaking voice ever but morons who act like he constantly mumbles and thinks he is hard to understand just hate him like the dumbass OP.

:pimp:

Amazing, a guy who has mumbled his way through over 1.5 decades worth of interviews isn't a good on-air personality.:lol

Not sure though.

I hate people who act like he "mumbles" all the time.

He does sometimes but the majority of the time it is very easy to understand him his voice is deep but usually clear.

ok rant over. :rant

Yeah Kevin McHale is second to Barkley in my opinion. I like Kenny, but sometimes he's annoying.

Kenny is annoying when he tries to gets wild and tries to outshout Charles..

I think Shaq will be great on Inside the NBA. On a serious show like on ABC or ESPN everyone seems boring. But goofing around with EJ, Kenny, Barkley and Webber and the other announcers like Steve Kerr and Reggie Miller is going to be fun. I think Shaq will fit right in.

It's going to be hilarious to see the Inside the NBA crew making fun of both Barkley and Shaq and photoshopping them.

I can't believe someone negged me for this thread.

Is it clear now? Even SNL poked fun about this very subject.

I don't see why anyone thought Shaq would be a great on-air personality. He's not that type of funny.

Haha that's funny/sad someone negged you for that.

Hearing Shaq talk is painful. It will never change.

I don't want Shaq to be as funny as other three. TNT doesn't need another Gary Payton. I would love to see Shaq as the less informative Kevin McHale.

agreed. all he does is mess up the chemistry. it's like he sits there, waits for those guys to finish while not paying attention, and then it's shaq time! shaq time is where he makes a barely audible, mumbling speech that has nothing to do with what anyone else was talking about. then he goes back to not paying attention.

i have to admit i was wrong about this one. i thought it was a good hiring when i first heard it.

Barkley wanted to make fun of him.

Also I like Shaq on Inside the NBA, he adds a whole new dimension to the show.

Hes not as much of a stupid, ignorant, blowhard as Chuck.
Hes not as much of a comedic "smart man" as Kenny.
Hes not attempting to be smart/informative like Webber was doing.

Shaq is just Shaq.

He sits at the edge of the table, doesn't make much sense when he speaks, then provides funny ad-libs during highlights.

He'll get better as he learns to be more critical of players because he's now retired and in the media. Most of the time when he talks about players hes bigging them up because hes friends/former teammates with them. That doesn't fly on TV because they want you to be critical of players for their actions on the court.

If Shaq was covering the 2011 NBA Finals, there is no way he would've said anything bad about LeBron although 99% of other commentators were calling him out.

I hate Barkley by himself but with Ernie and Kenny its pretty good. Shaq just brings tension when hes just sitting there talking shit, hes good when hes in action dancing or being goofy but was never the best with words.

The reason people dont like it is because Shaq is a bigger personality/star than Inside the NBA. So naturally everyone waits to see what he has to say because its Shaq. I mean look at how you're critiquing his comments as if anybody ever expected to hear anything informative out of Inside the NBA.

People are over-analyzing everything he says/does on the show because of his popularity. Shaq is definetly the 2nd most popular/well-known player in NBA history behind only Jordan. Although WE ALL KNOW he doesn't speak well, and has always been a goofball on camera, yet for some reason people thought he'd be different on TV. :facepalm

Unlike Magic Johnson, Shaq has such a polarizing personality with his comments that people will remember whatever he says. He talked shit about Bosh like 4 years ago and people bring it up when he says Bosh isn't a "big man" today.

eh, i'm just not digging it. nothing he says is insightful or interesting. it's always another stupid chris bosh joke or him talking about how wonderful everyone on boston was last year. he has a huuuuuggggggeeeeee ego too, so it's going to be hard for him to blend with the other guys.

Exactly...he just doesn't fit with this show. Get his own show or something, cause it's not working here. He can't laugh at himself, constantly uncomfortable when another player is compared to him (specifically Dwight), Spiteful jokes, and doesn't analyze the game....just hates on players he don't like, and bias towards players he do like.

Sorry, Inside the Nba is just not for him. Much better off with Webb.

yeah, i like webber and mchale way more. they are funnier. they are also not jealous and spiteful like shaq is for god knows what reason (shaq, u r one of the best all time . . . why do you have to pick fights with guys like dwight and bosh???). good point about shaq not being able to make fun of himself. barkley definitely has a big ego too and suffers a bit from that "it's me time!" disease where he stops everyone else to make a barkley speech. the difference is that usually his speeches at least have some value (or at least more value than shaq's), and he's way better at making fun of himself and interacting with the other guys on the crew.

But you knew this going into it. We saw him for like 20 years as a player.

Thats my point.

People are just over-analyzing everything he says/does because hes so popular of a person on a regular TV show. When I saw that TNT had signed him, I knew immediately he'd be sitting up there being a clown for the camera and doing what he always did whenever he saw cameras around.

You're kidding, right?

Webber has 0 chemistry with Kenny or Chuck.

When he was doing Inside the NBA last year it was cringeworthy because he tries so hard to make an informative point while Chuck/Kenny are clowing around. He sometimes talks way too fast when trying to get his point out like he spent a few hours memorizing it. Then once hes finished Chuck/Kenny get back to clowning around without giving it any thought.

Webber is perfect for NBATV with Kamla & Greg Anthony.

Thats because Chuck is an ignorant, blowhard.
He says dumb/ignorant things to get your attention when he starts speaking and thats what hes most known for. Thats where his appeal comes from.

You either like it or hate it.

I actually would've much rather seen Bill Walton join TNT simply for his out of the norm insight to go counter Kenny/Chuck's clowning around.

TNT needs a a straight man. And I don't mean Ernie (GREAT as I think he is), I mean an analyst. Clark Kellogg'd be perfect.

What?

Webb brings the representation of the next generation to the show, and it worked well. It excellently contrasts the "old-wisemen" style of Kenny and Chuck when Webb comes as the hip, younger legend that can laugh at himself, and make good jokes as well. And that was what made him so good, that he WAS the informative analyst that actually had great points, and he'd bring out the best of Chuck and Kenny, actually having to EXPLAIN themselves than just talk that jive.

He was a hell of a lot better than Shaq, but I will agree that he is excellent on NBA TV. Although I prefer the Webb Smitty combo over the Anthony one.

looool, that's what's up.

Yeah they are paying Shaq to be there and be Shaq. I bet most of the people who say Shaq sucks on air didn't like him when he was in the league, either. Or they did but were like "Shaq is dumb!"

Kenny is insecure and Charles is just drunk all of the time. I think the main reason the show is so wack is because the NBA product is so wack this year. If there was something to talk about, they would be talking about it. Name a worthwhile NBA storyline? Dwight's trade request? CP in LA?

I think GP and Shaq would work well together. It's funny, to anyone who understands body language, to watch Kenny get all punked out now, though. That alone is worth watching.

also lol at "Give Shaq his own show." After Inside the NBA it's... Shaq Live!

What about Shaq as a sideline reporter? That would be funny. Shaq is actually a funny guy, even though I feel that he has some level of brain damage compared to ten years ago. But there needs to be something to be funny about. That's why Charles is entertaining to people because he's so stupid and just talks out of his ass all of the time. The whole show revolved around him, really, he'd say something stupid or provocative and everyone else would run with it.

Edit: Also lol LSU got shitted on. He's gonna hear about that.

There's no overanalyzing. Shaq sucks. It's nothing to question. He's awful. He adds nothing good and with each segment he seems a bigger piece of shit than before.

And big ole LOL at Barkley being a blowhard. Maybe if he thought we'd be better this year you'd say less. Barkley does his job on the show. Even when he's random he does his job, and on top of that he does it very well. Yes, he's drunk and Kenny Smith is insecure. That's what it is.

Shaq, despite everyone else saying otherwise, will not be successful in his post-NBA career. However, his name will continue to be and we'll pass it off as him doing something.
