View Full Version : Sick Of This Bullshit. Why Don't Big Name Players Want To Come To Boston??!?!?

is it the team chemistry?
is it the notion that the celtics give up personal stats for team success?
is it the idea that they play hard every night?
is it the idea that they are a defensive minded team?
is it the history, the titles, the legacy?
is it the hands on coach, who has proven to comfort players into the celtics system?
is it the fan base? loyal? too harsh?
is it weather in new england?
is it the fact they have no numbers for current players to use, because of all the hall of famers?
is it the idea that they are bullies?
Chris paul was running his mouth about not coming to boston.. why the hell not? too much pressure to succeed? man up bro. KG said he didn't want to come, and won a title and never looked back.
I love it when the celtics fly under the radar EVERY NBA season, and by the all star break its the same old 2 place in the east, first in the atlantic, plugging away. so why is that looked down at?

It's because Boston is a piece of shit of a sport town.
The only way they can win championships is by way of steroids, cheating or joining forces as a superteam. Big name stars want to win championships without having an asterisk to their rings.

I've been wondering about this too. I don't believe it's because players can't be "the man" since PP, Ray and KG are entering different stages of their careers right now. You may have to sacrifice some stats but that always happens on a balanced team like the Celtics. Players who want big stats should stay on shitty teams where they can do whatever they want.

no other sports city gets a list of reasons to hate each team. its the winning, the titles, the legacy. why disrespect that?
and this is just 2000-2011..
the jets used to be so bad, they had no choice but to come up with the idea that the patriots cheated, because nfl teams had not seen such blowouts before.

It seems likely that the Celtics are going to have to go through a period of rebuilding within the next decade. Right now they're pretty old. That might turn off some free agents. I dunno. I love that city!

Us Bulls fans ask the same questions to ourselves.
Only answer I know for a fact that stops the Bulls from getting big name FA's recently is Derrick Rose doesn't recruit and Im actually ok with that.
Its not like if the FA's contacted Rose he would shoot them down. He isn't going to go out of his way to beg or anything of that sort though either.
If players (ahem, dwight howard, Lebron, Wade, etc.) don't realize how great of a place Chicago is to ball, especially with the team and coach in place right now, then **** em.
I still seriously believe to this day that if Lebron comes to Chicago instead of Miami they win the title last year no matter who made it out of the west.
Just saying.

NBA stars are all about weather, lifestyle, and off-the-court opportunities. Boston doesn't provide those things. The Celtics have never signed an elite free agent. Think about that.
Unfortunately, we need to do it through the draft and trades.

And yet Pierce, KG, Allen, and Rondo, all All-Stars, have signed deals with the Celtics. What are you expecting? When was the last time the Cs were enough under the cap to make a major signing? Think about it. For most of his career, Pierce has been a max player. AW was normally a max player. Baker had a large deal. And of course once Allen and KG were brought in there was no cap space. Name a star you think should be considering the Cs and I'm pretty sure I can tell you why it wasn't feasible.

I can understand players being apprehensive about going to the Celtics when they don't know what the roster might look like a season or two from now.
It will play itself out over a couple seasons. Ainge going after Paul as aggressively as he did shows that the Celtics won't sit still for long and clearly looking down the road. Celtics fans can relax, they'll stay in the hunt.

IT's well-known that he wanted to stay in Minnie. It's rumored and possibe he had wanted to go to LA. But what is known fat is that he welcomed coming here when the Cs got Ray Allen because what he wanted if he was traded was to be put in position to win a title. If the Cs had Rondo, Melo, 20 mil in cap space and the right to 2 possible lotto picks next season they'd be able to trade for Dwight. But they don't. 3/4 of the starting five could be retired in 2 seasons, P may play 3 if Havlicek's record is in reach. This is not the situation that a young star entering his prime wants to be a part of becuase this could well be the NBA's worst team in 2013 depending on what kind of moves Ainge makes. That's just the reality.

Boston is going to crush the Knicks Christmas Day. The hierarchy of the eastern conference isn't changing this season. The Celtics still have one more run in them with this core group. Knicks fans can have all the delusions of glory they want, but they are still our bitches.
Boston fan complaining over big names not wanting to play there when they started the whole "Big 3" fad? And please dont tell me KG/Ray Allen were apart of trades not two guys who cried about wanting to play there. If anyone did cry and make Boston step up or he was out? It was Pierce. But you got to love a fan of a team that won titles, that to my knowledge has consistently remained successful since putting together a Big 3.
Meanwhile as a Sixers fan we havent won a title in how long? Making the playoffs is ok, but it doesnt help us get better next season or in the future. We're stuck with how far you can succeed in the NBA. The one solution is to play like crap (when Boston did) and aquire top talent to maybe turn things around. We dont have a team to compete. We dont have a team big name players you are crying about want to come and play with or for.
Shut the hell up you big baby, no glen davis.

Boston has no money to sign big stars, they have no cap space.
Also, in 2 or 3 years, that team will be in the gutter with the Big 3 done/retired. No star wants to go to a team that they know will be void of talent with no good draft picks to build up talent before the Big 3 retire because the will always be in the 20's until then.

Maybe it's because despite the fact that your football team has won 4 Super Bowls and your basketball team 17 titles, you still act like your f-ing Red Sox, who have won 2 or 3 titles in the last century, are the greatest franchise in the history of athletics. Makes me sick how all of you think that franchise is the sh-t when you have two others in your town that blow it out of the water.

I don't know if I agree with that. I have never been to Boston but I wouldn't mind living there. I think it has more to do with the fact that NBA stars like to be in warm cities or a huge market like New York.
The Red Wings are basically the NHL's version of the Celtics and you get talent that want to come based off the franchises history all the time.
It's not like the players HAVE to live in the city. They all basically live in areas like Bloomfield Hills or Rochester.

What does Boston do after this season? This has to be the last season this team plays together. Who knows though. KG could come back and have a great season and re-sign (but Boston would be idiots to do any crazy kind of contract). Ray Allen would be good as a 6th man coming off the bench and just scoring. But if that doesn't happen and KG and Allen leave what does Boston do? Pierce will probably stay. I can't see him asking to be traded. But will it be the Rondo/Pierce/Jeff Green team?

Players don't want to come to Boston because they're time is just about over. Coming in to this season Ray Allen is 36, Kevin Garnett is 35, and Paul Pierce is 34. They all have a tremendous amount of miles on their bodies and the talent at the top of the conference has only gotten better. They're just not the same team they once were. A star like Paul isn't going to commit to going to a team this old.

Had a discussion with a friend recently about this very topic and that is pretty much what we agreed upon. Though I also get the sense that there's a bit more to it as well... whether it's something about the city, the franchise, the weather or the history, players who have played for us love the city and players who haven't are somewhat wary of it.
What - wasn't it just last year that they got Shaq to go there for veteran's mininum? Think Shaq would play for veteran's minimum except for a chance to win another ring? And he'd already burnt his bridges in LA and Miami - should've gone to DAL.

Bill Russell was one of the integrators of the NBA and furthermore lived through an extremely troubled time in our nation's history. Of course he's going to feel like the town was/is racist because he had to experience it as a lightning rod firsthand. And the franchise giving Bird a statue but not him didn't help. Things have changed since he played here, this is one of the most liberal cities in the area. I can't remember the last time the mayor of Cambridge wasn't a lesbian (seriously).

There are a few reasons.
Pierce, Rondo and KG conduct themselves like knobs and most people want to beat them rather than play with them.
Boston has little or no cap space to sign a legit free agent.
Boston is cold.
Boston is labeled as a semi-racist town. I don't know if this is true or not.
Boston has little to no assets that rebuilding teams would want.
There you have it. OP can go sit in the corner and dry his eyes now.

all the comments are interesting. not a big deal. I have just always wondered. Boston is a great city to me, and playing for Celtics would seem ideal for an NBA player looking to really have a supportive fanbase. Celts fans are so passionate. Anyways I can't wait for NBA basketball anymore! Its driving me crazy, I am basically forgetting about Christmas haha

Celtics should strongly target Thabeet if he is amnestied.
Worth the gamble for them.

I thought this too. I thought the second trade that got rid of Erden was worse last year then the Perks one. Really left them with nothing size wise. Even if Thabeet sucks the big one at least it's a big with some energy of the bench.

It's a travesty that Boston won't end up with what should have been a Paul/Howard dynasty.
1. They have the cap room coming up.
2. Allen/Garnett are still good and it would be reasonable to expect them to take a significant paycut with how little they have left in their careers.
3. They have one of the best trade assets in an all star caliber point guard on a cheap (relative to his production/talent) contract. I'd put Rondo right at or above Eric Gordon in terms of value in a trade.
It should have gone down. Paul/Allen/Pierce/Garnett/Howard.
They had the money, talent, everything.

This. Lol at the Celtics being the greatest franchise of all time. Tell me the last the the Lakers had the worst record in the league.
These comments are legit but the 2001-2002, 2002-2003 celtics teams are amazing to me. At least realize the Celtics were 2 wins away from a finals match in 2002 with LA. 49-33 record. I don't care what people say Antoine Walker was a beast that year.
Think about the earlier years of the NBA, the Celtics are a dynasty. History is evidence. Go to the TD Garden and look up.

Oh, and KG and Pierce are not exactly well liked around the league.
This big time.

and to clear the chris paul comment up.. people in new england laugh at these moron players for turning down playing for the greatest franchise in the history of basketball.
nobody really wants chris paul on the celtics anymore. we move on.
They are arguably the greatest franchise in the history of basketball. Arguably.
You say it as if they are head and shoulders above the rest of the league in terms of their legacy.

is it the team chemistry?
is it the notion that the celtics give up personal stats for team success?
is it the idea that they play hard every night?
is it the idea that they are a defensive minded team?
is it the history, the titles, the legacy?
is it the hands on coach, who has proven to comfort players into the celtics system?
is it the fan base? loyal? too harsh?
is it weather in new england?
is it the fact they have no numbers for current players to use, because of all the hall of famers?
is it the idea that they are bullies?
Chris paul was running his mouth about not coming to boston.. why the hell not? too much pressure to succeed? man up bro. KG said he didn't want to come, and won a title and never looked back.
I love it when the celtics fly under the radar EVERY NBA season, and by the all star break its the same old 2 place in the east, first in the atlantic, plugging away. so why is that looked down at?
:rant
It's dealing with asshole fans like you.
the residual stench of feces that was smeared in Bill Russell's apartment is fresh in the Black Community.
Mark Wahlberg is also a racist. He blinded a Vietnamese man's eye. All the man wanted to do was help this thug Mark to get away from a crime he was committing. Poor Vietnamese man. :(
Mark also beat up blacks while yelling "n*qqers"
I am a white man and proud to be a white man but I don't blame Blacks for not wanting to go to Boston.
