View Full Version : The case for Kevin Garnett as the best player of the 2000's

M.Bustly15A5RU8

- Best and most versatile defender of the 2000's and it's not even close. GOAT worthy defensive impact on his team.
- Best passer and playmaker at the PF position in the 2000's.
- Most dominant all around player of the 2000's.
- Took the most pathetic franchise in the history of the NBA to the WCF only to lose to the stacked Lakers.
- Past his best and yet instantly turned the Boston Celtics into the best defensive team in the NBA and was the main reason for the championship.

03-04 playoff run (took a bunch of scrubs and roleplayers to the WCF and took the Lakers to 6 games):

24.3 ppg
14.6 rpg
5.1 apg
2.3 bpg
1.3 spg

GOAT worthy defensive impact.
:oldlol:

- Best passer and playmaker at the PF position in the 2000's.
Ok?

- Most dominant all around player of the 2000's.
No, that would belong to either Kobe or Duncan.

- Took the most pathetic franchise in the history of the NBA to the WCF only to lose to the stacked Lakers.
Yeah, and?

- Past his best and yet instantly turned the Boston Celtics into the best defensive team in the NBA and was the main reason for the championship.

Sure, too bad Paul Pierce and Ray Allen two other future HOFers were also incredibly instrumental the championship run.

Garnett has no case over Kobe, Shaq, or Duncan. He is the 4th best player of the 2000s. He is really on his own island at #4 though so I'll give him that. The player behind him at #5 really isn't that close either.

I don't get what you're trying to say.

Garnett took scrubs to the WCF.

Lebron took scrubs to the FINALS. (2006-2007 season)

Lebron also had an unbelievable performance against the pistons in the ECF, 2007.

So he took his team to the Conference Finals, yeah big deal. Wade won a team that had never won a championship before. LeBron took his team to the Finals with a weak supporting cast. It's not like that the Wolves that season were horrible. That was the only time KG actually had pretty good teammates. KG didn't have a bad supporting cast at all in '03-'04.

Tim Duncan has not case over Kevin Garnett as a defender. Not even going to mention he's always had good defensive player around him.

Kevin Garnett as an individual defender and a DEFENSIVE LEADER has more impact on that side of the floor than Tim Duncan.

If this was true why was Garnett's team always poor in terms of defensive rating? Garnett's defense is dependent on the team's schemes and teammates where Duncan would be a great defender in any system and with any player.

KG is on the first team all 2000s team clearly. The man revolutionized the PF position. He also played plenty of SF early in his career. There has never been a 7 footer like KG. U can blame him and Dirk for 7 footers wanted to play PF and SF instead of C. But the thing is KG and Dirk had the skillset naturally to play the way they do. Other guys try to be like them, but many of them weren't naturals. What makes KG unique is he also played like a big man should. He led the L in boards on multiple occasions.

But in terms of the player of the 2000s, I can't give him that nod. Shaq, Kobe, and Duncan I would rate ahead of him. They accomplished more than KG in terms of accolades. However, in a given seasons, u could say KG was very well the best player in the L. His insane versatility and intensity stood out from everybody. And no doubt KG is a top4-5 GOAT PF. I'm sure many people for their team would pick KG as their all time PF. Because of his revolutionary skillset.

Honestly he may be the 3rd best player after Shaq and Duncan.

People underrate KG because he played on mostly "garbage" and I mean hot stinking trash teams during his young and prime years.

Even in 08 when he was past his prime he was still the MVP of that Boston team and the biggest reason they won it all.

I am probably one of the few that thinks he has a case for the 10 Spot on the GOAT lists or not far behind it since if you take away team accolades which shouldn't be used to judge individuals anyway I dont think players like even Kobe had more valuable/impactful or productive careers.

Even if you think they did its incredibly close and most people probably wouldn't think it is.

KG = Underrated for sure. :applause:

I only disagree with the bolded part, but you did say you are probably one of the few ;)

Agree with everything else. KG played at 150% season in and season out for some absolutely terrible Wolves teams.

To the OP: Duncan and Kobe (and probably Shaq) ALL have a better case for best player of the aughts over KG. Not to disrespect KG at all, but he was definitely one of the 5-6 best players of the entire decade.

2000-09; Duncan, Shaq and Kobe are top3 easily. KG is the fourth.

Duncan; 24/13/4/3 in 134 playoff games. 2 MVPs, 2 FMVPs, 3 titles as the best player of his team.
Shaq; 25/13/3/2 in 137 playoff games. 1 MVP, 3 FMVPs, 3 titles(4 finals) as the best player of his team(4 titles and 5 finals in total).
Kobe; 28/6/5/1 in 147 playoff games. 1 MVP, 1 FMVP, 1 titles(2 finals) as the best player of his team(4 titles and 6 finals in total).

Garnett; 22/13/5/2 in 61 playoff games. 1MVP, 0 FMVP, 1 titles as the best player of his team.

KG has no case for the best player of the 2000s, and those defensive stats leave out 99-00, 00-01, 01-02, 02-03 (prime Duncan years).

"The case for this thread as the worst of 2011"

There is a gazillion Kobe threads and you don't care about that.

The way people rank here....the highest KG could be for this era is number 4.

Duncan, Shaq, and Kobe are for sure the top 3. Then KG has to battle against Dirk for the 4th spot.

And no, it doesn't definitely go to KG.

Duncan
Kobe
Shaq
Lebron
Dirk
KG
Kidd
Iverson
Wade
Nash

1 to 3 are interchangeable same for 4 to 6.
