PER is efficiency, not who is the best player.

In his minutes, he's probably been the most efficient player. Expect that to drop as he plays more minutes.

His player eff rating is still impressive. I've been saying for a while now that the Lakers need to make Andrew their #1 option (or at the very least get him more touches).

More like... has played the best statistically over the first 9 days of the season (2 games for him).

Not necessarily the same as "best player in the league."

He has been impressive though

Bynum is the Lakers best player in the last 2 games. If he can maintain that stats-line he's easily lock for the All NBA Team Award. Bynum needs more touches.

According to this LA shouldn't trade Bynum for anybody and should trade Kobe and Pau for Jon Leuer.

Who needs to watch basketball when you can just look at stats? sarcasm not obvious enough that I need to put white text?

Bynum > Lebron, Wade and Bosh combined. If he hogged the ball like those guys, he would lead all of them in every statistical category.

This is EFFICIENCY. Is it any wonder that a guy shooting 67% is going to be off the charts? Its just two games. Lets see if he can keep it up. LBJ is 6 games in. Its a MUCH bigger sample size.

Yes...PER is a joke....

it only has so many of the greatest players of all time at the top of its list....

people are so ignorant its a joke. PER is not a player ranking...its a measure of stats/efficiency......

and it does a pretty damn good job at measuring what it is supposed....its the fault of the ****ing ignorant morons that think PER is worthless because they think its a player ranking formula

:facepalm :facepalm :facepalm :facepalm :facepalm

Bynum > Lebron, Wade and Bosh combined. If he hogged the ball like those guys, he would lead all of them in every statistical category.
If he handled the ball like them, his PER would drop drastically. There's such a small sample size with him, and the position he plays lends itself to having a higher PER. Centers in general only take the highest percentage shots, naturally are in position to grab more rebounds, don't handle the ball (meaning there's almost no chance of TO's) and usually have the height advantage against 80% or more of the players on the floor making them equipped to block more. You don't get strikes against you for missing a block. There's no "missed block" stat.

The centers job is just set up to have higher efficiency, but that doesn't necessarily higher impact or more value.

Back to the sample size, we're talking about 2 games. Until last game, LeBron was averaging 33PPG. You don't just say "oh well, give him the scoring title".

This is the equivalent of of a player taking a single 3 pointer and making it. Sure, you could say he shot 100% from the 3, but you'd be a god damn moron to try to argue that he's the best 3 point shooter because he shot 100%.

You are 100% correct. BUT, anyone who gives 2 shits about a players PER over 2 regular season games has no idea what the point of PER is in the first place

correlation does not equal causation. PER = non peer reviewed junk. I could do the same thing(feel dumb for not doing it to be honest)

It is easy to regress a bunch of information and come up with a statistic.

Droid101
01-03-2012, 08:11 PM
PER is an efficiency statistic, that doesn't take defense into account.

It does a pretty good job telling you which players are playing efficiently with the minutes they get.

It does a bad job of telling you:

1) Who won the championship that year
2) Who is the most valuable player on their team
3) Who is the most valuable player in the league
4) Anything other than what is bolded above.

hollinger is the biggest idiot of all time

he actually had espn re structure their team / statistics page to rank players in order of PER instead of ppg like every other sports website

PER is the most idiotic agenda drivin stat that was put together just to prop up lebron

he didnt know the negative effect it had on non stat padders and positive effect it had on no name limited playing time nobodys

a little off topic, but still talking about Bynum, i graduated from st joes in 03 where he went to high school, i remember going back one year and watching him play and being extremely unsold and disappointed with his skillset considering he was towering over the other varsity players on the floor. Since then he has obviously improved, who wouldnt when you spend your every waking minute playing basketball, but I dont get why all the love for him around the league like hes the next coming of shaq or enter any other legit centers name.

He has been in the leagye enough time now to show that he is injury prone, sometimes lacks the motivation and isnt consistent enough. just saying...

Yeah, if the season was just these few games Bynum would get the MVP. Too bad there is 60 more games to go. If Bynum holds that PER we will all bow down. Now can we wait and see instead of making a thread after every game.

dont get it.... i see Lebron at #1 with 35.77 and Bynum #3 with 32.52 (pretty damn good tho!!).. must have made the thread before his last game

All this means is that Bynum is so far the most productive Center per minute

to early tho to look into PER/EFF/productions/stats whatever... would give it at least 40 games, thats when things balance out

monkeypox

It's not a stat, it's a number derived from stats based on Hollingers opinion on their value.

It's not a stat, it's a number derived from stats based on Hollingers opinion on their value.

i like actually NBAs "EFF" better than PER......

PER = per minute productions (still accurate imo)

EFF = end productions... doesnt care about minutes / pace... guys like Wilt & Oscar are on top here with a major gap and rightfully so

TOP 10 "EFF" right now:

1. Lebron - 34.2
2. Bynum - 31.0
3. K.Love - 30.4
4. S.Hawes - 26.0
5. Dwight - 25.7
6. Lowry - 25.6
7. B.Griffin - 25.2
8. Carmelo - 24.0
9. M.Gasol - 23.2
10. Durant - 22.6

TOP 10 "PER" right now:

1. Lebron - 35.7
2. Bynum - 32.4
3. K. Love - 28.5
4. Durant - 27.9
5. B. Griffin - 27.0
6. Carmelo - 26.4
7. M. Williams - 26.0
8. K. Lowry - 25.8
9. R. Anderson - 25.7
10. M. Brooks - 25.1

at the end the most productive players find their way at the top no matter how you twist and turn it.............. you dont need EFF/PER to know who is the most productive player...... just look at their stats and you will understand

eheh no... but 4th most productive according to "EFF"... there is no denying this in 30 minutes:

12 ppg @ 68% FG
13 rpg
4 apg
2 bpg
1 spg

that **** is EFFicient

But like i said......... its waaaaaaaay to early to look into stats/productions/EFF/PER and so on right now.... give it at least 30 games

That's the whole point of playing a two man inside out game:facepalm

billyhoe
01-04-2012, 07:46 AM
there are a couple of reasons for why he has been this good this two games.
he's healthy and that's maybe the most important think about andrew ( with any player in the league or is sport for that matter ) i've always said when anderw when is healthy and ready to play, he is curenntly the best big men in the game. (much more versitile down in the post then howard).second of all he is hungry, he is more mature then past years, he understand that, now when there is no odem, no brown. the team isn't deep has it was in past years, he would have to bring more of him self at the offence at demand to get more touches, and i believe kobe told him all of that .let's not forget the lakers didn't start the season that well, and guy's on the team,as well as the management expected him to stard off big for them.
