View Full Version : Player Who We'll Never See Another Of

AngelEyes

What current or former player will we never see another of? Watching old highlights of Charles Barkley and I just can't envision another like him coming along. The guy was an absolute freak of nature. The guy was 6'4" 3/4 and dominated guys 5 and 6 inches taller. He was also 250-260 pounds and ran the court like a point guard. He had an incredible amount of natural power. It seemed that Barkley was always the strongest and most physical player on the floor, despite his height.

This video shows how amazing he was. The dunk at 1:31 is extraordinary.

We'll never see another Hakeem, Oscar Robertson, Dirk Nowitzki, Shaq.

That's all I can really come up with. These guys have something REALLY special about their games that would be extremely hard to copy.

The players of the 70's probably said the same thing when Tiny Archibald
was playing...In a league with rule sets tailor-made for quick perimeter players. I'm sure we'll see another small scoring guard come along.

I think it will also be a long time before we see another David Robinson. A guy who is 7'1" and chiseled, can run the floor better than any center, sky for the alleyoop, shoot the baseline jumper, pull down 12 rebounds per game, and block 3 or 4 shots per game.

Garnett's a good one. A guy who is probably 7'1" who is that versatile. A power foward who can average 13 rebounds and 6 assists.

I think that we'll see another Dirk kinda soon-ish.

Ryan Anderson has the shooting ability. He's not as good of a rebounder, granted playing next to Dwight impacts that. And he's got nowhere near the handles amongst other things. But he is kind of close in a way. Where as I can't think of a guy who emulates alot of Hakeem, Bird, AI, etc etc.

No bigs practice post moves anymore really. they mostly practice shooting look at Bosh, Boozer, Amare, etc etc. Primarily jumpshooters, who occasionally work in the post and have a few post moves, but not necessarily post up guys. So all these factors are going to play into this

Or Kevin Love is kinda in that category for up and coming guys too. Him and Griffin are the two biggest 4s that have come up recently in the past few years and developed really well. So I guess it goes both ways, but I think it is shifting somewhat.

I don't see why we wouldn't see another version of former greats in the future. Basketball is a relatively young sport, and as much as talented those players were I think we're giving them too much credit. About a week ago on Open Court, Reggie Miller said there will never be another Shaq. Why not? With constant development of medical technology and training anything is possible. I even predict there will be a player who will surpass Michael Jordan within our lifetime.

I can imagine not seeing another player like Bill Laimbeer or Dennis Rodman due to the rule change opposed to more physical plays back in the day, but talent-wise, there's no reason to believe we won't see another former great-like players.

Statistics-wise, I don't think we'll ever see another Wilton Norman Chamberlain. I can't imagine anyone in the league will ever be able to drop 50+ points per game and grab 20+ boards.
Same thing for Bill Russell and all the legends of the past who managed to grab more boards than you can imagine.

As far as skill-wise, I don't think we'll see another Allen Iverson-type of player. I could be wrong, but chances are that 6'0" scoring guards won't make much of an impact in today's era, as far as being league scoring leaders goes.

Honorable mentions: Oscar Robertson (averaging triple-doubles), Hakeem Olajuwon (over 4 bpg?!), Charles Barkley (6'4" & dominated bigger PFs & Cs), etc. I just don't think anyone will be able to pull off the feats these guys did.

Blair is 6`7 but not even close to as Skilled, Fundementally Sound, Ball Handler, Powerfull, Quick, Potent, Agil, Leaper etc Player than Barkley

Barkley is by Far the Most Unique Player Ever

It depends on your definition of a pure point guard with Magic.

I would say Barkley and Hakeem are probably the most unique at the top of my head. Hakeem because I extremely doubt we'll see another center on the level of Hakeem athleticism and skillfulness. He was a guard in a center's body.

And Barkley because of the obvious. 6'5 rebounding like a big.

We've seen players like Magic before. They weren't "Magic" but they were similar. We haven't seen a player similar to Barkley or Hakeem.

I'm looking at it more as he is a player that you just don't see anymore. I'm not saying he was a hall of famer or a superstar, just that he was an anomoly. You don't see 6'5 forwards making a living on the low blocks these days. I mean, he would post up and routinely score on bigger players with a wide array of moves. Guys that size today rarely post up or play with their back to the basket more than a few times a game. That's all I'm trying to say.

With all due respect, I don't think we've seen anyone like magic yet. There's been plenty of tall players who could handle the ball and pass. Penny, Odom, Lebron, etc. The thing is, those guys all look for their shot first and foremost. they all dribble too much. Did you ever see Magic play? He was thinking pass as soon as he touched the ball. When he needed to he would take over games and score. He would hit the boards when he needed to. He was the type of player who could score 2 points and still completely dominate the game.

I can never understand this when I see it posted (not a knock on you LT). You Tube has clips all over the place of every legend. A couple of clicks takes you to any player you're curious about these days. There's no excuse to not at least have an idea of how someone played back in the day.
