I love my superhero shows:

X-Men
Spider-Man (from the mid 90's)
Batman The Animated Series

EXO Squad
- This was one was awesome as well. It blew my mind as a kid because it had a mature war theme and main characters actually died.

you know what? i hate to say it, but i'm finally going to after many years of leaning in the other direction.

South Park is better than The Simpsons. season for season, episode for episode, it's flat out better. of course prime Simpsons rakes every pot it enters, but enough of separating a single series into two distinct eras... it's still the same f*cking show and it didn't have to fall off. but it did and it sucks now and there's no ignoring that fact.

so South Park. for 15 seasons and running, it has consistently offered the best material time after time. the only mark i can think to count against it that could potentially propel The Simpsons back out in front is that it's only 10-12 episodes per season, as compared to 20+. but still...

anyone with me?

edit: simpsons has impact/trendsetting/trailblazing on its side too though... ehhh, i almost -- ALMOST had myself convinced lol

If you don't count foreign cartoon show, including anime, I'll pick The Simpsons also. Its longevity alone, not to mention it is on the axing-happy Fox, proves how great the show is.

Childrens cartoons or adult cartoons?

Qwyjibo
01-10-2012, 12:48 AM
I don't even remember the last time I watched a new Simpsons episode. It's been at least 5 years I think. Over time it seemed to be gradually declining in quality and I just stopped watching. This was a show that I would watch multiple times per day when I was younger.

With South Park, I'll check out every single new episode. They'll miss on some like all shows do but the quality relative to other stuff on TV is still, IMO, very high.

This should be specified. Otherwise I'm picking Pinky and The Brain.

i have obsessive friends (call them 'losers' if you'd like) who have tracked the entire series to its peak, its initial point of decline, and its bottoming out.

peak: 5-8
decline: 9
shark jumped: 11-12

that's a solid nine years of bullshit, give or (more likely) take a season or two. still a long time of crap production compared to where they were.

Most people here are debating on favorites of their own personal shows onced watched as a kid. Were debating the GOAT cartoon (adult or children), the show that was passed on either from generation to generation, you've watched it as a youngster, now your siblings or kids are. A show that represented a major part in both the culture of TV and changed television as we know it today.

You have to split it up into categories if you're going to do kids cartoons too. Because Looney Toons, Spider-Man, TMNT are totally different from The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park.

My favorite kids cartoon is definitely X-Men. I used to watch that show every Saturday morning in the '90s. I had every action figure. lol.

My favorite teen/adult cartoon is definitely The Simpsons.

Also, used to love watching The Flinstones, Tom & Jerry, The Jetsons and Scooby-Doo.

Korra better come close to that. I have high expectations.

I also have massive expectations. There is no real reason for it to not be better than the first except extremely poor management.

The only thing I could see being a problem is not enough episodes to build the story. Like the first one succeeded because you saw some of the best character and world growth on tv in the last decade. But the second show is much shorter so... we'll see. I'm excited.

Yea, 26 episodes pales in comparison to the original TLA. But the original creators are still in control so I have good faith.

I still have a sour taste in my mouth from the movie. Hopefully Korra can make me forget that abomination.

They made a movie? Oh wow I didn't know that and spend 7.50 on it and want to punch M Night Shabamalam in the nuts. :(

There are a couple titles that I wish someone would redo and do properly because I think they could get to Star Wars status with tie in games, comics, etc. And that show is one of them.

Also on the top of my list the Percy Jackson series. That shit has gotten so expansive in book form and still going strong, it's got the potential for some blockbustering epics a la Harry Potter or LOTR and they just missed the point entirely.

But I digress. Tom and Jerry is my shit too. But I have it 4th because I feel it falls short of what these other shows can do in being very versatile.

King of the Hill needs some love.

yes it does.

even though ~80% episodes can be summed up as-

bobby takes up hobby that hank is appalled at. hank comes round in the end and possibly participates.

it's still brilliant. i think the humour is not as 'in your face' as most cartoons it might be compared to and every episode leaves you feeling warm inside. Great show.

i've been watching it from the start. currently half way through season 8 and it's still really good. the trucker episode was one of the best yet... i tell you what.

Batman: The Animated Series is in syndication on the HUB network. Watching it as an adult... that show is the shit. Very mature and extremely well written for a 'childrens' cartoon show'. The artwork is fantastic and the movie based on the show (Mask of the Phantasm) is one of the best Batman flicks in the entire cannon. Plus the intro alone puts it high in the rankings.

Why I'd say it is GOAT >>> something like DBZ is cus how tight it is. 3 solid seasons of genius, with maybe only one episode, the Great Divide, that isn't good. Insane creative fight choreography, combined with great writing, character development, story that defies convention, and funny humor all throughout.

DBZ has so many episodes that are just shit, even Dragon Ball Kai has too much rambling sometimes.

Airbender has a case for GOAT the same way the wire has the case for GOAT show even though it was only 5 seasons.

It's that good?

i know a lot of people arent fans. but i love it. dry, dialogue-driven, witty humor. and each character is uniquely great.

I feel like that's actually a cool sit back and have "me" time show. I'll get into it. Do I NEED to watch the first few seasons or I could start from the last few?

id start with the old ones. theyre some of the greatest. sure, theyll feel a bit dated, but the humor is still pretty relevant. it's not imperative you start from there though. seeing as every season has some pretty damn funny episodes.

The adventures of tintin is a very good cartoon too but it had tons of differences from the books.

Bojack is a weird and frustrating case in that seasons 2-6 are so far superior to the first season....but you have to watch the first to get it. It’s not like the office or parks and rec or whatever where you can just skip to season 2 and be fine. There is crucial character setting there.

But I agree that it’s not always great initially. Episode 8 I think is where it really started to turn my eye.

But Bojack in its later seasons is some of the most emotionally intelligent and rewarding television I’ve ever seen. Albeit perhaps too heavy for some.
