Obviously Kobe has always been able to put up big games, and is still able to.

The problem comes when he is shooting poorly AND other guys DO have it going, and he refuses to defer even for one night for the good of the TEAM, and they lose or barely squeak out a win despite him.

IMO those games say more about him than these games where he does nothing Jamal Crawford doesn't do a couple times every season as well.

It didn't feel like a historic night because its Kobe...the guy who dropped 81 points in a game :oldlol: But exciting performance nonetheless...in his 16th season, wrist injury and all. This was the first time I've seen the Staples Center alive this season...they wanted him to get 50 so bad but I'm glad he didn't go for the last shot. I love having this guy on my team.

Great game by Jordan, but the question was if anyone scored over 48 in their 16th or later season. Jordan played a total of 15 season, in between both his retirements.

Legit question, has anyone ever scored this many points, this late into their career?

Great job by Kobe. I don't think anybody scored this many points on their 16th season or beyond, but it'll be interesting to check, right?

My first thought would be either Kareem, Moses Malone, or Karl Malone. I couldn't get Kareem's 16th season, but on Kareem's 17th season, he scored 46 points. That's all I got. Karl Malone had 41 or something.

Most Points Scored in a Single Game in NBA History By a Player At Least 16 Seasons Into Career

Kobe Bryant - 48 points on 1-9-2012 (48/5/3)
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - 46 points on 2-6-1986 (46/11/4)
Shaquille O'Neal - 45 points on 2-27-2009 (45/11/2)

Definitely an historic night for Kobe. :applause:

Obviously Kobe has always been able to put up big games, and is still able to.

The problem comes when he is shooting poorly AND other guys DO have it going, and he refuses to defer even for one night for the good of the TEAM, and they lose or barely squeak out a win despite him.

IMO those games say more about him than these games where he does nothing Jamal Crawford doesn't do a couple times every season as well.
5 time champions don't hear crying from chavalas like you.

Took as many shots than all the other 4 starters combined too. Let's be fair: if LeBron did this, you kids would be all over him, "ball-hogger, stat-padding, they are up by 10!"

If Kobe didn't shoot 3's this year at all, 2pt% only: 52.1%, career high I believe. :ohwell:

Agree with mid-range too, it's been one of the best in the league so far.

Just another random, contrived fact/stats Kobe fans made up to make him look better.

LOL Kobe came out as a 17 year old outta high school. I LOL @ who talk about Kobe's longevity and how they use that as argument as to why Kobe's better than Duncan. Duncan was about as NBA-ready as you could get. He could have went #1 after his freshman year if he wanted to.

It's so sad that Kobe fans have to turn towards these retarded stats like "most points after 16th season" or "highest level of player after a X certain number of years". That is ridiculous. Kobe went a year ahead of Duncan but is still playing at a high level -- LOL...

Duncan made a promise to his mother and kept true to that promise and stayed all four years.

If you guys actually wanna make it fair, give Duncan 7,500 more points, 3,500 more rebounds, and 750 more blocks and see where we stand now to compensate for the years he spent in college LOL

what would that change? going to college only gives a player MORE energy to have so they can perform in their 16th season. youre literally giving credit by saying how amazing it is lol in that duncan with 4 years of saving his body couldnt do it in his 16th or hell probably even his 13th season.

No wonder people hate Kobe fanboys, this worship, making a 48 game bigger than it is by using ESPN tatics to make something like a 48 point more historic than it is, considering also that Kobe is 33. It's like they have no life. If they're so impressed, imagine what they would think of Jordan's 51 point game with the Wizards.

Kobe used to be one of the top players in the league back in the day, with the likes of T-mac, Vince Carter, AI, Duncan, Shaq, etc. Those guys are DONE now. A decade later, he still sits at the top of the NBA...averaging almost 30 ppg, clearly a MVP frontrunner. No wonder why everyone is MAD.

That's a testament to his work ethic, skills and dedication to this game. The only reason you hate on this guy is because you know deep within that your current favorites will be washed-up when they reach that age. Most of the top guys today rely on athleticism (ahem Lebronze) and that usually goes away around age 30...that's when they will be DONE, just like Vince Carter. Don't hate on Kobe just because he is more skilled than your favorites.

Spare us the contrived "16th season!" stuff - Kobe is not ancient, and is far more althetic than a 36-37 year old player who has played 13-15 seasons simply because he's younger. But I expect him to play at a high level all season and if Mike Brown's defense can get us the #1 seed in the west (I believe it will), Kobe will be the frontrunner for MVP. Kobe hasn't had as much rest as he did this year since 2007, the year before he won his MVP award. People don't realize how much the knee and ankle affected his game last year. He got the special procedure to fix it, he is rested and therefore, he looks amazing. The Lakers have gone 4-1 in the last 5 games when he has averaged 36ppg/6apg/5rpg on 51.5% shooting.

BTW, if MJ was doing this in his 16th season, with a wrist injury so severe that most people who see it up close don't understand how Kobe is playing with it, the media would build him up as a hero. But with Kobe, they won't do that...after all, they need to continue overrating and protecting MJ's image...sad.

I have noticed a pattern in MJ fans behavior...any time Kobe has a great performance, they are obligated to say "remember when MJ did this." It's not just them, the media does the same thing. I wouldn't have a problem if they were consistent. But rather, they only bring up MJ's best performances as if he never had a bad game...when Kobe had an off night in Denver, why didn't they bring up a bad game from MJ for comparison? And MJ has plenty of those too, which we conveniently like to forget. But I get it, that doesn't fit into the agenda. Its just amusing and quite desperate. At least Kobe has 81 points all to himself. That's one performance that will never be touched or compared because MJ has never done anything like that in his entire career.

This, is exactly why I consider Kobe Bean Bryant the Greatest of all time. A perfect example are the guys you mentioned. T-mac, Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, Snack O'neil all fall in the category we like to call "A FLASH IN THE PAN".
All great players in their own right, but not on the same level as Kobe "THE G.O.A.T" Bryant.

With Snack O'neil and Tim Duncan being the execeptions. As most of us know they'll be inducted into the Hall Of Fame. Just NOT in the G.O.A.T. conversation.

Peeps are gonna hate, and they'll keep hating.

VC is one of my favorite players, but I 100% agree with you.

I was watching the game last night and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It almost looked like 06 Kobe, dare I say it.

He's the best player in the NBA right now. There, I said it. It's not even fair how good this guy is.

Kobe's high is 12 more points than Jordan's....WOOP DE DOO!!!! Call me when Kobe averages 33 points for his career in the playoffs.

I love how Kobe ******gers are lightning quick to point out how Kobe didn't played much the first seasons, and how that's why his career averages, bla, bla,bla and his playoffs averages bla, bla, bla... but now that fact is irrelevant, Kobe scoring 48 points at 33 years old somehow is historic. :sleeping

Yeah dude, I feel exactly the same way when Lebandwagoners gush over Lebron's triple double in a Heat loss, like he won the NBA championship or something.:sleeping

Wow, nobody gave a rats azzz when Ray put 50 on the bulls in a playoff game mind you he wasn't being guarded by 40y.o Grant hill and athletically challenged Jared dudley. Still though Kobe deserves his credit, it wasn't a spectacular 48 PT but he got it done like always

It is awesome that 33 year old Kobe Bryant in his 16th season could drop 48 points on 58% shooting on the hated Suns.

It's awful that 33 year old Kobe Bryant HAD TO drop 48 points on the Suns. True Lakers fans realize that Kobe Bryant has been carrying this team on his bad wrist all year. This team is pretty bad, and they will not make it past the first round of the playoffs as currently constructed. Kobe shouldn't need to drop 40-something, 30-something every night on bad teams for the Lakers to win, but he does. He won't be able to go off every time like this against better teams like the Bulls or Heat either.

Unless the Lakers trade Bynum for Howard, and then use the Odom Trade Exception to land a decent PG, we'll probably see lots more MVP-esque numbers from Kobe, which will only mask how done this team is.

Wrong. Kobe doesn't need to drop that many points but he will when he needs to like for example when we are missing 3 good players or when Bynum is being pressured alot defensively.

NOT TRUE...Jordan is the oldest to 51 points...and if your talking 60, i think Wilt Chamberlain may have that one too.

Chamberlain was 32 1/2 when he scored 60 points in Jan of 1969. He followed that game up a few days later with a 66 point game, on 29-35 shooting (.829) which is the most efficient 60+ point game in NBA history.
