View Full Version : Build the Boston Celtics roster for the 2012-2013 season.

Boston is the most obvious victim of the lockout shortened seasons so far. With Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen coming off the books this summer, Boston will have four people on contract (five if Bass' player option is exercised). I wouldn't be surprised if KG opts to retire, although it's yet to be seen.
They can try and get Love or Howard, but that's a total pipe dream. Boston will have a lot of flexibility and will have to essentially build a roster from scratch again. Build a probable/realistic team for this team out of available free agents and players on contract.
PG: Rajon Rondo/CJ Miles/Keyon Dooling/Avery Bradley
SG: Leandro Barbosa/Ray Allen/E

I'd rather make a run for OJ Mayo than Barbosa. I think Memphis may let him go unless nobody makes a high offer. I think Minny will match anything for Love and as a result let Beasley go.
Adding Beasley and Mayo would be nice, but we still need a C.
Step 1:
Out - Kevin Garnett
Out - Ray Allen
Out - Jermaine O'Neal
Out - Chris Wilcox
Out - Mickael Pietrus
Out - Marquis Daniels
Out - Sasha Pavlovic
Out - Keyon Dooling
I'll let KG & Allen go elsewhere after a great standing ovation send-off by the fans in whatever may be the final game of the Celtics season. Jermaine O'Neal plans to retire anyways. The rest are role players who dont serve any purpose outside of helping the 2011-2012 team win a Championship.
Keep - Rajon Rondo
Keep - Brandon Bass(Assuming he exercises his Player Option)
Keep - JaJuan Johnson
Keep - E'Twaun Moore
Keep - Avery Bradley
Keep - Greg Steimsma
Step 2:
Trade Paul Pierce
Boston: Dorrell Wright, & 2012 2nd Round Pick
Golden State: Paul Pierce, & Cash considerations
The best time to let Paul Pierce go out is with KG & Allen both leaving, instead of the embarrassment for Paul Pierce spending another year on a losing/rebuilding team before being waived on June 30, 2013 to avoid paying him his full salary for the 2013-2014 season.
Golden State gets Pierce for 1 year in his hometown to help them compete in the Playoffs before they can waive Pierce and save $11 Million in cap space. Then he can decide to retire or go join another contender.
Step 3:
2012 NBA Draft
Using http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-mock-draft/2012/
#17 Pick - Draft SG Austin Rivers from Duke
#24 Pick - Draft PF/SF CJ Leslie from NC State
#47 Pick - Draft C Reggie Johnson from Miami
Step 4:
Cap Space: $36,148,804(Using 2011-2012 Salary Cap of $58.044 Million)
Sign Nicolas Batum - 5 Years/$50 Million
Cap Space: $26,148,804(Counting $10 Million spent on Batum)
Sign Carlos Delfino - 1 Year/$6 Million
Cap Space: $20,148,804(Counting $6 Million spent on Delfino)
Sign Chris Douglas-Roberts - 1 Year/$3 Million
Cap Space: $17,148,804(Counting $3 Million spent on CDR)
Sign Sundiata Gaines - 1 Year/$3 Million
Cap Space: $14,148,804(Counting $3 Million spent on Gaines)
Sign Chris Kaman - 1 Year/$10 Million
Cap Space: $4,148,804(Counting $10 Million spent on Kaman)
Keep money prepared for 2013 Free Agent Class by handing out 1 year deals instead of wasting money signing players to longterm contracts just because you're under the cap.
Step 5:
Lineup:
PG - Rondo/Gaines/Bradley
SG - Rivers/CDR/Moore
SF - Batum/Wright/Delfino
PF - Bass/J Johnson/Leslie
C - Kaman/Stiemsma/R Johnson
Great opportunity for the young players to develop, tank for a Top 5 Pick, and have $30 Million in Cap Space to sign players in a better crop of Free Agents in 2013.

No Pass Bass has to be the cornerstone. That is the best nickname ever! :lol

CJ Miles isn't a PG btw, being picky on your list. :oldlol:
Rivers isn't going 17th in the draft either, really have a hard time seeing that.

They just need to remember that it's 2013, not 2003, so get rid of all the old geezers (KG, O'Neil, Allen, etc.) except for Paul Pierce because of his BOS legacy.

Ray Allen doesn't go on the bench, much less for THE prototypical 6th man in the league. Tho getting him for the bench is monstrous.

Pretty sure the idea has been discussed a lot. And I'm sure even Doc has thrown the idea around.

I know, I'm just going off of what DraftExpress projects.
He'll probably go 8-14 in the Lottery.
But I definetly see Boston trading up for him because he fits perfectly next to Rondo, regardless of the connection via his dad coaching the Celtics.

-Move Bradley to d-league (a waste of roster spot)

Seriously. It's as if they like having Daniels around because he tells neat stories or something... because the dude sure as hell doesn't bring anything whatsoever on the court.

I just realized Ainge did another wtf decision by trading Mashon Brooks to the Nets.
The kid is impressive and his skills set are already nba ready, I wonder how the fck did the come up with that decision?
The only good thing Ainge did this season is the Bass-Fat Davis trade or maybe the Magic FO is that stupid and we just got lucky that Dwight wanted Fatass on his side.

In his defense, the Celtics didn't have a guaranteed backup 4 after last season.
Anyways, some rookies can get hot. Brandon Jennings had a stretch where he went ape shit.

they are kinda stuck where they are.
they're only real trade asset is rondo. he makes sense on the lakers, but i dont see bynum being available for him.
pierce, garnett, and allen are tradable to contending teams, but i cant think of any who can offer something worth making that trade for.

Why do people keep harping on this? The C's were never interested in Brooks, they drafted him for the Nets. About 20 other teams passed on him too, but only the C's are called out on it.

I don't see them contending for a championship in the next couple of years. But to stay competitive i would try to sign Jeff Green in the offseason & try to get a big man who can be a low post option because seeing Jermaine O'neal corpse out there it's kinda sad.
Keep Pietrus, Allen & Jeff Green
Get rid of KG & JO

I seriously doubt its possible, but if I was the Celtics management, I would do nearly anything to get 2 top 15 picks in this years draft and ideally one in the top 6/7. Some serious talent available this year.
Problem is (as others have said), the only quality trade piece they have is Rondo and I would be looking to keep him tbh.
Realistically the Celtic fans are staring down at least a 3 year barren spell unless they strike gold in the 2013 or 2014 drafts if they can get a lottery pick.
The sickening thing for Celtic fans is that in the space of one week in the ridiculously shortened off season, they were looking at going into the season with David West and a healthy Jeff Green... a few days later and they had neither and were left with basically no good options. If they had the two players mentioned above, Pierce and Garnetts minutes could have been seriously reduced and they could have one more big run (I still doubt they would have been good enough though).
Out of the scenarios listed above, I would personally look to keep Rondo, Bass, Green and look to bring in OJ Mayo. I would then resign Ray Allen cheap and Garnett on the vet min if he wants to stick around for another season or two. That would be a good base to build upon. Everyone else I didnt list should not be resigned, traded or released (amnesty pierce if a few quality free agents want to sign).

Gut the roster for draft picks.
I'm overreacting, I know. But I bet we could get a lottery pick with our pick and Avery or Johnson. (yeah, I know our pick might be in the lottery :()

This. Not to mention he's a question mark as far as recovering 100%. I doubt Boston will resign him if they're led to believe in physicals that his condition will hinder him in the future.

you have got to be kidding me. your team has been at the top of the league for like the last 4 or 5 years. plus you got a chip when the big three first came together. do you have any idea what most fans would give for the team they follow to have that kind of success? that celtics team has alot to be proud of.

They should look into Deron Williams. See if he'd be willing to re-sign and if he is, trade Rondo for him. If Dwight is traded to anywhere besides NJ, then Rondo is probably the best NJ can do.
