I am hardly negative about anything. I'm just saying that the more information you have about the people you talk to, the more fruitful the conversation. This is always true.
It's also true that often, given the style of people's posts, it may be not necessary to know one's year of birth to understand he's a teenager (like your last post shows). But speaking of basketball, it may help.
