I think the response to this video has more to do with the perception given off by each "side" in this fight in terms of how they act. We never really know what's true and what's not when we get a three minute glimpse of a fight uploaded on YouTube. If we hear two people shouting or threatening one another, we assume (perhaps wrongly) they're both in it together and whoever gets beat down may have had it coming. If there's a summary alleging the guy getting beatdown stabbed one of the gang-member's girlfriends or something of that nature, we again probably assume someone had it coming.

However, in this situation, where we have no alleged background information and are operating solely off of what we see, we view a group of ridiculous, cliquey high school kids right at the get-go who are laughing and in one case, smiling and telling his friend to hold his gloves, as if he's about to go participate in some joyous act. We then discover the victim has not fought back for the entire video and is defenseless. Further, we find he's not English speaking and assume (for right or wrong) he's likely not some super bully getting his comeuppance.

Basically, the victim does nothing in this small clip to give the viewer an indication that he had any of this coming. And yes, that's a terribly shortsighted way of looking at this situation. We all know nothing about what happened. But with every fight clip uploaded, we never do. We only assume to know what we see. Therefore, I don't think the feedback to this video has anything to do with the color of skin here. It's just that in the portion we saw, it appeared to be a guy who could barely speak English and trying to avoid conflict getting ruthlessly pummeled.

No one likes to see the defenseless get beat. It always tends to spark outrage, white, black, Asian, Norwegian, whatever. For instance, the video of the homeless man getting punched on the Subway in Chicago also drew a very significant amount of outrage, views, and media coverage. Raymond Palomino, 17, of the 3500 block of South Hoyne Avenue, is the only one of the seven to be charged as an adult, according to a police News Affairs statement released early Wednesday.

He is charged with one count each of robbery and aggravated battery, both felonies, the release said. He is expected to appear in bond court later Wednesday.

A 16-year-old Arlington Heights boy as well as five Chicago teens -- a 16-year-old boy, four 15-year-old boys and a 15-year-old girl -- were also charged, the release said. They each face one count of felony robbery and one count of felony aggravated battery. Their identities were not released because of their age.

The beating was captured on video by an accomplice and later posted on YouTube. The video shows the mob of teens yelling the n-word more than 25 times as they punched and kicked the victim

Unreal, I found out that two of the bullies in this video go to my school. One of them sat at my art table, right in front of me. I think they got expelled, and they should have.
I was amazed that very few people in my art class knew who he was and what he did. The video went uber viral a few months ago.
