View Full Version : Blake Griffin played PG till 10th grade

 . I always wondered why he had such great handles, passing and court vision for his size... and I just heard a podcast of a Thunder reporter who's followed Blake since his freshman year in HS. He said Blake Griffin was a 6'3 PG going into 10th grade who played primarily on the perimeter while his brother Taylor played in the paint.

He said in 10th grade Griffin had a massive growth spurt and got to the nearly 6'9 height without shoes he is now. Pretty crazy and something nobody probably would have known.

Lol I envy this massively. I was 6'0 in the 7th grade and never grew another inch. I am 23 now.

Only the most versatile ones. Lebron, Odom, Iggy etc. You can tell which players played PG growing up that are bigs now based on ball handling, passing ability etc.

In HS? Seems odd because his handles, court vision and passing are sh**. He must of been a bad prospect before his growth spurt.

Griffin isn't anywhere close to being one of the most versatile players in the league though. Great scorer and rebounder, solid passer. Sucks on the defensive end, iso and help, and is limited in post skill.(can't create his own shot) Inconsistent jumper, and doesn't always fully commit to screens. :confusedshrug:

Yeah a late growth spurt, he wasn't nationally ranked until I think his junior year, he was 5"9 and shot up to 6"9 in one year.

Dwight surprises me. Other than Sabonis I cant think of any true bigmen who started as points. Sabonis shot up to 7'3'' out of the blue I believe.

Yea. I think people are acting like it's common but it's absolutely not. It's rare for guards to become bigs half way through HS and develop an all star level big man game in those few years before the NBA.

Its said he was on crazy steriods in the 80s but he was already a giant by then.

iirc ray allen was a center for his HS team, and when jim calhoun scouted him he said that allen had the flattest 3pt shot he had ever seen :lol

I was 5'9" in grade 9 and 6'5" as a senior. Played guard until halfway through the eleventh grade.

Ben Wallace was also a point guard if I remember correctly. He is an under-rated passing big-man.

Its not common but it has happened before. Shaq said he was a point guard, Anthony Davis was a guard etc...

Lets not forget it isn't that hard to play point up through 9th grade at any level. So saying he played point doesn't mean anything unless he was good and it translated. Obviously, some of it did in his case.

Same with Shaq. Nobody Shaq's size had his handles, passing, court vision and agility. You could tell he's played guard.

i was 5'1(glen davis type player, heavy but quick) until the summer after tenth grade

came back after the holidays, didn't notice i grew a whole foot over the summer (6'2) an thinned out ridiculously

my vert went up astronomically

the pg skills and ball IQ were polished from years of having a height and weight disadvantage

teams thought i was a transfer lol

Hahaha... fair enough. I agree his jumper is a bit flat.. but it's so money. I gotta give props. You guys have all made this thread very interesting with your tidbits. Can a mod change the title thread to something a bit more relevant? Like players who played different positions growing up etc.

HGH makes you grow taller???
Depends on when you take it I guess. Once your growth plates are fused and closed, you can't get any taller. I suppose if you took HGH as a teen or something you would grow taller than you normally would have.
