Lakers interested in signing JR Smith

Sources tell me that J.R. Smith has already decided where he will sign once his season ends in Zhejiang, China. The talented shooting guard will forego better offers and the promise of a starting role in order to come off the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers. He sees the opportunity to play alongside superstar Kobe Bryant as too much to pass up. He also feels that, after a short stint in this season in L.A., he can then sign a long-term deal and recoup the money. Smith sees the Lakers as one more perimeter scorer away from being serious title contenders. Other teams with strong interest in J.R. are the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks.

Great post, thanks for the heads up. Also Clippers and Lakers are pretty even in terms of getting him. Both can offer the minimum (correct?) both would start him and both are contenders. Knicks will pay more though.

Jr isn't known for his brains. He's going to choose Melo, most money, big role+ spotlight in NY. I doubt he cares about winning first :oldlol: . If he cared about winning he would choose Lakers or Clippers.

One other thing to consider is that he's been voted into the CBA All-Star game, which is to be played on the 19th. I'm guessing he'll try to get out of that if his team fails to make the playoffs, but it will probably a huge fight.

Fair enough... maybe I should say.... Does he care MORE about winning than money+playing with buddies+role+spotlight? Because this year it's VERY unlikely the Knicks suddenly turn into an elite team and make a deep playoff run. At best they are a 7 or 8 seed, first round exit.

Butler actually didn't choose the Clippers for the money. He talked about it in an interview on Clippers pre game. He said the team told him that they were about the pull the trigger on a trade for CP3 and he loved the direction of the team. The Clippers were negotiating with him in the first place because they told Chris Paul to choose out of Butler, Prince and Battier and he said Butler. He assured the Clippers front office that if they got Butler he would stay long term.

LOL at you thinking Reggie Evans the top per minute rebounder for much of this decade wasn't a very valuable free agent signing that many teams wanted. I love how you downplay it though since he's not a Laker.

Yea, not sure how anyone could think I'd say Kobe off the bench for JR Smith. Kobe could start at the 3 or JR could come off the bench to play the 2 and Kobe could then move over to SF.


Lessens the need for a playmaking PG, but they still need someone who can manage the game a bit better or at least is a better defender over long periods. Fisher is still a good defender in particular situations, but throughout the flow of the game he's a huge liability.
