Every small gaming board needs a BS thread were you can drop you smaller gaming related comments. This is the thread were you post all your gaming related commentary that you want to post, but wouldn't be making a thread for. Keep your ISH buddies up with what you've been doing!

So essentially, this is the "What have you been playing lately?", "What game did you just finish?", "Guys, check out this cool/exciting/funny video", "Give me a little advice on so and so" and "Wow did you hear about X?" threads all rolled into one neat thread.

So this past week I've been rummaging through the ultra geeky visual novel Katawa Shoujo.

The ostracized visual novel about dating disabled girls spawned out of 4chan (wow that sounds awful), which was just released a month ago after a 4+ year development period. Because of my innately geeky nature, boredom and curiosity because of it's substantial news coverage, I decided to give the title a spin. I've never played one of these visual novels before and was quite reserved coming into it, only to find that the stories are quite sophisticated and the music is pretty solid.

I liked it. If you like games such as Phoenix Wright and/or Anime you should check it out, it's totally free.

Now I'm just waiting for Mass Effect 3.

I'm waiting for Mass Effect 3 too.

I just played through Assassin's Creed for the first time. I have Assasin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood, and God of War 3 waiting on the shelf but I don't want to start up any story-based games before ME3. For now, I'm keeping busy with fighting games Super Street Fighter 4 AE and UMvC3.

March 6 is a crazy gaming day for me. Three games that I planned on buying all coming out on the same day. Mass Effect 3, MLB 12 and Street Fighter x Tekken.

The Katawa Shoujo demo that came out a while ago was the first VN I ever played, I remember being pleasantly surprised by the quality. After that I read Saya no Uta and Yume Miru Kusuri, and that's about all the VN's I've read. Those two are really good though, if you're interested in another VN you should give those 2 a shot. I think Saya no Uta only took 3-4 hours to finish completely.

Currently I'm working through Lost Odyssey. I remember seeing a friend playing it years ago and thought it looked interesting, never did get it though. Finally picked it up in gamestop a few months ago, and started playing it a couple weeks ago. Really liking it so far, has a really good story.

Currently working through Career mode on UFC Undisputed 3, with small doses of MW3.

Currently in Welterweight and working towards getting a title shot. My guy is a stand-up specialist, and I look to finish fights as early as possible. I wouldn't call my ground game a glaring weakness, and I can hold my own against most fighters on the canvas, but I love raining punches on my opponent. Not one of my fights has gone the distance so far, and I'm 10-1.

finally playing arkham city. siiiiiiiick game. my kinda action adventure in terms of puzzles and combat mechanics. and i usually don't care about this stuff, but i love the character bios - just seeing when certain villains and other characters came about in the original comics - tracing them back to the 1940's, 50's, and 60's...

alternating between that and pretty much all the pixeljunk games on psn except for the tower defense one. shooter, shooter 2, side scroller, and the platforming one.

fitting in some resident evil revelations on the side too.

just got done with mass effect 1. sticked with the stock shep and made a paragon soldier. the combat was kinda stale at first but as i got better weapons and attachments, the more funner it got.

the story was well worth the purchase and now i can't wait to get back into me2 and see how my choices will provide almost a new experience -- even though i beat it without beating the first.

gonna import my soldier to and infiltrator on me2 on insanity. after im done, ill import shep into me3 and go vanguard. prolly wait til bioware brings out the new ending since everybody hated the stock version.

Yeah,I remember thinking with 2k11,"Man, it's gonna take YEARS for them to top this!!", but lo and behold, they still kicked it up a notch. For Swoosh, a couple of things they improved on was making Jordan's turnaround Jumper a lot quicker in 12, as well as making the Ball arc vary from shot to shot. Like, if he's "hugging" the baseline on a turnaround, he will arc it higher, just like in real life. Also, the faces are more accurate IMO, even as good as 2k11 did faces the first time.

Also, Scottie Pippen plays more like "PIP" now, and not as much like a role player like he did in 11.You can "feel" how valuable he is roaming the floor on "D" just like real life. The only thing missing from 12 really, is Phil walking the sidelines (like he was in 11), but you'll quickly forget about it, once the action starts (for Phil Jackson lovers, don't worry, 2k11 can be bought between 10-20 bucks now lol).

All things considered, I've never had a game make me feel like a "kid" again, as much as 2k12 has this past year (Sonic Generations came close though).

I think you have to be a Resident Evil fan to like it and even then....it's just passable. It's just a standard 3rd person shooter. If you don't play with real people then it just isn't that good. You squad AI is some of the worst ever. I've only played through two sections of the campaign and it's only alright. The multiplayer was actually quite fun though. There's a cool mode where your 4 man squad goes up against another in a mission to get to the landing spot and wait for an escape chopper to get there all the while zombies are every where.

My score for this game is 6.5/10

I'm falling behind on my playing list because I'm picking up loose games. For example, I never finished The Force Unleashed, nor did I play the 2nd game. My cousin was appalled. Picked this up yesterday, but already kinda regret it. It's a great game, but it's just too similar to last year's game to warrant spending new game money on it. I'm not using the new Kinect stuff though which is obviously the main new feature of the game, so I shouldn't really complain about the basic gameplay being pretty much identical.

I know I'm like 4 years late on this but I just played through and beat Assassin's Creed 2. Much better than the original because of the customization and better side missions. The graphics and gameplay in Italy was pretty dope too.

My only big complaint is that fighting was way too easy. I took down the final boss Rodrigo Borgia without him even touching me. Hopefully Brotherhood improves the series a bit more. I'm interested to see if the multiplayer is any good (or if anyone is still playing it lol).

I don't think I'll ever catch up with my Steam backlog. DX invis war & hr, da:o & 2, witcher, sonic: generations, the last remnant, space marine.

Only started into sonic and last remnant of the whole bunch.

I played into dragon age, but it was just o.k. through the first chapter, morrigan(?). Medieval shit is overexposed like nazi shooters. religion, royalty, magic, swords & armor, dragons.
At least the witcher looks like it has some more aggressive combat than the pause and position model i was using in da:o.
I'll definitely finish sonic. That's fun, and challenging enough, so far in the short bursts i've played.
The Last Remnant is a game that i'll never finish. It tries to be fresh and updated with tbs fighting like the 8bit and 16bit rpg's; it fails on all fronts. The graphics feel redundant after the first five minutes. Characters aren't interesting or compelling. Probably has a lot to do with me being a 30 yr old man than anything else though. I just don't care about some kid's ascent into world's hero and adulthood. Big numbered damage flying over heads and a well thought out library of spells/attacks still hold appeal with me. If devs/publishers are going to revive an rpg like this, it would be expected to bring back popular characters too. (That's how Nintendo milked me through the Wii. Twilight Princess, ****off.)

Trying to push through some of the games with some fm2011 (coventry shitty), frozen synapse and sw:tor sprinkled in.

Finished it last night and i think it improved on AC2. I enjoyed the story more in 2 but Brotherhood had better assassination missions and side missions. Building the Brotherhood was a cool addition too. The ending was a ahock at first but i think it is pretty obvious why it happened after thinking about what Juno said and what 16 said in the truth.

Borrowed Revelations from a friend and I wish this game had never existed. The only cool parts were the cinematic cut scenes. They stretched out Ezio's story out 1 game too long and the game didn't really add anything to the story except for tying up Ezio's and Altair's story in a nice little bow.

Started playing WoW again.... I know, I know, you can all line up in an orderly fashion to point and laugh.

Seriously though, as much as I've enjoyed playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, it's getting to the stage for me where there are so many 'Heroic' missions to complete, Heroic meaning it probably requires between 2-4 players to complete it that I now spend more time looking for players to group up with than I do actually doing the missions. The problem is more apparent on not so populated planets. I know I can ignore them and come back to them later, but right now my mission log is just stacked with Heroic missions to do, I just can't be bothered anymore.

Generally, I enjoy playing MMO games by myself. Of course not always, but for me it's a way to pass the time when I can just grind my way through a few missions without anything to really distract me, or have to worry about other players (apart from gankers sometimes, I'm in a PvP server).

Making myself sound like a social outcast here. :oldlol: I'm not, far from it, I enjoy talking and playing with other players, but not to the point when I have to solely rely on other players just to progress further through the game.

As for other games, I bought Total War: Shogun II off Steam the other day, must give that a go sometime soon.

Finished the Witcher 2. It was great. The universe is very refreshing compared to other story driven games that fall a bit more in the hollywood style of storytelling. Bioware and Rockstar go for the same type of more "mature" and more serious storytelling, but they have always fallen short in my opinion. Too much stereotyping, flat characters, too many weird inconsistencies in the story, weird choices.

The characters in Witcher are just must more refined, more human. There is an interesting duality to them and they are all a different shade of grey morally, it makes them more realistic. Even your friends have their flaws, even your enemies have their positives. The choices you make are real choices, not just a simple "light side/darkside" choice. Even the more moral choices can have real grim outcomes, and you can always make convincing arguments why either choice would be more appropriate. It's strange how such a small team can really nail this part of storytelling compared to the big dogs.

I will play through it again, because there is a very significant portion of the game you'll miss if you only play it once. But also, Binary Domain will arrive in the mail tomorrow, excited to try that out too it seems fun.

Binary Domain is a very decent game. The gameplay itself is "generic", but all the additional stuff is really well done. The robots are cool enemies that deteriorate when you shoot them in a cool way, there are many boss fights, many unique little situation, the story is entertaining. It's should be less than twenty bucks right now, definitely pick that up if you like third person shooters and need something to play.

It's good but you have to level up classes(engineer, medic etc.), you have to level up your vehicle skills(which is retarded because it's hard as shit to get kills with the plane w/o heat seekers), and you have to level up your rank. not to mention you have to use each gun to get the attachments. Yeah, I really enjoyed the first one a lot. It felt the most "Star Trekish" to me as far as atmosphere. The second one I thought relied too heavily on action and cover. There were already plenty of games like that out at the time it released. ME2 also didn't expand on its RPG roots enough to feel like an actual sequel. I've only played it for like an hour lol but yeah I can definitely see how it will probably get kind of boring. I wish there was some stealth elements in the game and that it wasn't so linear. It'd be nice to have some freedom to do more than just kill shit and keep moving forward.

I really like the realism in LA Noire and the story seems very strong so far. I only played for an hour or two and I'm only a traffic detective still but I can tell I'll like it a lot.

Picked up Cthulhu Saves the World a week ago, and it's great. The script was superior to Grotesque Tactics, and the game itself wasn't as buggy. I'll jump into Breath of Death this weekend.

@jb7: If you haven't already, pick up Bioshock. A major criticism of the game was being too short. I'm in the minority on this, but that's why I preferred it to ME. Drawing a comparison to television shows, Mass Effect is a lot like Arrested Development in the sense that both require an unconventionally larger time commitment to have a full appreciation of the story and characters. Bioshock, on the other hand, has a much quicker pace to the game(action and story) while I felt like ME carried a lot of filler and took a while to really get going.

I'm currently at about 65% completion for Arkham City right now. I have to say, I thought getting all of the riddler trophies and challenges would just be another annoying collecting mission, but it's actually pretty awesome. Some of them actually have stumped me on the first go around, but I usually can figure em out.

That's exactly how I feel about it. When I first started I was overwhelmed with how big the game world was and how much you could do. As I went on though I found a lot of the quests tend to follow the same pattern, and the combat isn't real deep. Mind you I still put a lot of time into it, more then I do most games, I just don't think I'm ready to jump back into it yet.

I still think the original Bioshock has been the best gaming experience I've had in this "next-gen" era. I'm still working on Bioshock 2, and it's nothing compared to the original (at least IMO anyway).

GOBB, I know you were really into GTAIV and Red Dead Redemption... would you say Bioshock was a better game/experience than those two? I'm just now getting into GTAIV ... and it's not as fun as the previous releases on the PS2.

I wasn't a HUGE fan of Oblivion ... so I'm still waiting for an even more price drop before I get Skyrim. LJJ, which do you think is better Oblivion or Skyrim?

Skyrim is essentially a refined version of Oblivion. It's the same shell, but they looked at the main shortcomings of Oblivion and tried to work at those (with mixed success).

For instance there is the combat. There was a real problem in Oblivion that the fighting felt very delicate and unwieldy. And although the fighting hasn't really changed, they've added the occasional kill animation; they've made the skills play into it a bit more; the shouting mechanic adds some variety. All those minor improvements do make the fighting more gratifying.

Same idea with the main quest and overall world. In Oblivion the main quest felt like a massive chore to finish. The Oblivion plains were excruciatingly boring to work through. In Skyrim however the main quests involves dragons, civil war, better locations, player choice, interesting factions and more variety. It's not great, but at least it isn't bad.

So there are a lot of understated improvements. But Skyrim is also very much the same game as Oblivion, it's not revolutionary.

I'm personally never worried about spending the money on an Elder Scrolls game though. They always give you a lot of value for your money. Even I feel like I got my 80 bucks worth of game, despite being saturated with the game long before seeing the majority of the content. I still enjoyed Fallout 3 better though.

Yeah I'd go as far as to say Bioshock was a better gaming experience than GTA4 and RDR. And I'm a big fan of Rockstar/those games. I played Bioshock late. Amazing experience for me. Each level, the different envioments, characters, story. Exploration and ability to go back to previous levels (something I didnt like Bioshock 2 not allowing). Mind blowing game for me. I didnt expect me to like it when I borrowed it.

Its a game I wont ever trade in. When you put in countless hours, days, week into RDR? From main story, side missions, challenges and just good ole free roaming (which will never end). Take $10 and purchase the DLC Undead Nightmare. Well worth it.

Sidenote: Unsure if you're a multiplayer person but there is free roam in multiplayer. One thing thats fun to do? Is kill law enforcement to spawn a bounty. The thing is other players will try to kill you when its announced to the lobby there is a bounty on your head. Its fun keeping them away for how long you can do it. Also fun when a player tries this and you take out a sniper from long distance and end their bounty. They go ape shyts and try to chase you.

F*ck it I'm putting this game in, you got me wanting to play now.

Haha, it's a highly addicting game. I didn't get to bed until nearly 6:00 in the morning, just woke-up, and the first thing I did was fire up the PS3. And I got the "Game of the Year" edition (for only like $30) and it comes with Undead Nightmare.

I hated the Mako, I'm a bit of a completionist too so I always tried to get everything when I landed on a planet. Gave up on that eventually, really isn't worth it.

They do get rid of the Mako in the next game, but they replace it with a boring planet scanner mini game, so I'm not sure if it's an improvement or not.

That connected careers mode was looking really awesome. Doubt gameplay changes much from '12 but I'm feeling that mode. Players attributes changing depending on the schemes they fit into is pretty huge. CPU teams shouldn't draft a pass rushing OLB and than never have him get after the QB. Combining superstar, franchise is a good idea.

The flawed graphics kinda ruin the anticipation but it's closed beta and shit so can't really hold that against them. Plus the game is powered by Unreal engine which puts my mind really at ease considering it's basically an MMO Unreal Tournament game.
You can buy upgrades/weapons and accessories through the Marketplace feature using money you make by working for contractors i.e. playing matches. There are difference races and classes that offer variety of playing styles, classes are your typical Recon, Assault, Heavy etc.
Gameplay is fun, shooting/aiming is great for a closed beta game and after a while that you get used to the boring graphics you start to see the game as it is: an entertaining online shooter that gets you hooked.
PS: It seems like the player capacity is higher than 24 as I played a few games with 26 total players connected.

Yeah me too.

Considering the game did get canned, twice, it's a good game. It's easy to see that the setting is pretty much the only reason this game is good though.

I wonder if the big dogs like Rockstar (and Volition I guess) will ever roll the dice on a more exotic location like that.

You were right, Infiltrator class is really fun. Snipingn and the cloak is awesome plus AI Hacking and incinerator are useful powers. I like the idea of being more tactical too as an infiltrator instead of just spamming biotics.

Beat ME2 last night (including the DLCs). Really good game but I liked ME1 more despite the improved combat system. There were some really cool characters in this one but the story was more compelling in ME1.

I'll prob pick up ME3 on the way home from work and play it up until AC3 comes out.

I think I'm gonna get the Killzone Trilogy coming out on October 23rd for $40. I never completed KZ1 and KZ2 and KZ3 are so good that I wouldn't mind playing them again. If any of you out there with a ps3 like a good fps campaign with decent to good multiplayer, then this trilogy is worth the price.

DotA 2

Tried the beta. I didn't really like it. It felt too sluggish and unresponsive. DotA 2 and League of Legends just don't do it for me. I think I'm too accustomed to the quality of the engine, graphics and gameplay that Blizz created with WC3.

But I'd settle for a new game that isn't RTS too. A great MMORPG would be nice. Or a different online hack-n-slash. I played D3 for a while. Got a few characters to 60 and made it as far as I could through inferno, but it just pales in comparison to the fun I had in D2. Probably in big part due to the lack of pvp.

I think the 2000s will turn out to be the golden era of online PC gaming, while the 2010s are shaping up to be the dark ages of online PC gaming. The 2000s had EverQuest, DaoC, FFXI, WoW, D2, WC3, CounterStrike, the original Call of Duty's. The 2010s will have, what... FFXIV, World of Pandas, D3, Guild Wars 2, and the Nth sequel of CoD?

I agree partially, but how could you forget to mention SC:BW for 2000s era ??? HOW ? :D Anyways, sc:bw is superior to sc2, but sc2 is going the right direction, and we can remember that starcraft became great after expansion, and sc2 first expansion is yet to come.

Anyways, people these days choose games not because of quality... you can't blame developers too much.

One last Association play-through on 2k12 before I get 2k13 next week.

I recently switched from XBox to PS3, and never got around to the post-lockout roster update with rookies, free agents, and trades.... so the base roster was pretty outdated.

I basically brought Lebron back to a bare-bones Cleveland Cavaliers team.

After making some solid trades, unloading most of the cumbersome contracts, and simulating the first season....

Entering the free agency period with $20-million in cap space, I was able to sign Chris Paul to a max-superstar deal and DeAndre Jordan to a 5-year, $5-million base year deal.

PG: Chris Paul - C.J. Watson
SG: Arron Afflalo - Danny Green
SF: Lebron James - Ryan Anderson
PF: Taj Gibson - Marcus Camby
C: DeAndre Jordan - Anderson Varejao

Combat is solid. It has a bit of a "rhythm" based element to it like Arkham Asylum/City. You need to time attacks properly. Your signs (magic) plays a part in combat too. You can also equip secondary throwing weapons (daggers) and use bombs/traps in combat.

Regarding Gears of War 3 (online - Team Deathmatch)

You have four teammates, all five of you should not run to the same place. There are typically two power weapons, three if you count frags/flames grenades. If we all run into the same damn place, that leaves two other strong weapons free for the other team to pick up.

If you and another teammate go somewhere together, don't run away when things get heavy, it basically leaves your teammate to get slaughtered because what was once a 2-on-2, is now 2-on-1 (or worst, 3-on-1) because you decided to hide in cover or away when you should have been on the attack.

I'm not even that great at this game, but i understand enough to work with the team. Most people play this game as if its 1on1 and all the extra people out there are just spectators so you should totally ignore them and just pull out your shotgun and take on the world.

I don't care if we lose the match to a better team, but i don't want to lose because we didn't have a team at all.

I am starting to come to the conclusion that Left 4 Dead 2 just might be the best fps multiplayer fun game i ever played, 3 years going (5 if you count L4D1) and still not bored a single bit, there is some special custom servers i found with 10 vs 10 players that gives special abilities as a zombie or survivor and Valve keeps adding new content... ridicilous fun... i am not sure what it is but all i can say is the game is just completely original, completely different from your typical fps multiplayer games that keeps spamming today like call of duty... the feel of being a zombie (and oh my god so awesome type of zombies & abilities they have) instead might have something to do with it to... and oh yea, the realistic gore combined with melee weapons such as Katana, Chainsaw and so on slaughtering thru hordes of zombies like if you were that guy from the movie Braindead in that final scene... can never bore me out...

I play only fps multiplayer (starting from quake 1/2/3, half life, counter strike, battlefield, call of duty and so on) and none of them could keep me playing for that long with the consistant amount of excitement...

Highly recommend you try this game out, preferably on PC... and for you who got "bored" of L4D, get back in and try some of those new 10+ vs 10+ custom servers (you have no idea what you are missing!)...

This game is a great entertainment package. The Kilimanjaro decent was one of the single greatest pleasures I've had playing a video game in a long time. The music, the visuals, the gameplay itself, the rewarding feeling of completing an oftentimes difficult challenge... this game is very sneakily great.

It's only wrench is replay value. I suppose getting online will help, it's a good party game, but I just don't see myself really playing it over and over again.

Making my way through my giant list of Steam games from the past few sales. I just finished Alan Wake.

Wow. I'm surprised by how much I liked this. This is a case where a well-written story and characters and really cool production touches overcome flaws in gameplay.

+ I loved the way they made this game feel like episodes of a TV show. 6 episodes, each one ending with a sort of a cliffhanger. A nice tough with the "previously on Alan Wake..." to start off each new episode. The entire atmosphere of the game was perfect. The lighting, pacing of the story and horror elements.

+ It starts slow with the first 2 episodes but somewhere in the 3rd one I started to really care and become interested in the story this game was creating. I wanted to save Alice and find out what the hell was going on.

+ Cool new combat mechanic of using light to weaken enemies before you can destroy them.

+ Great voice acting all around.

+ David Bowie's Space Oddity over the end credits? Hell, yes.

- The story and setting limits the variety of enemies you face. At times, some of the encounters get really repetitive. Also some areas have unlimited spawning enemies and you only realize you have to run after wasting tons of ammo. I hate endlessly spawn points in games. That's just lazy.

- It's a very linear game. Going off the main path will occasionally reward you with extra ammo, small additional pieces to the story or totally useless "collectibles". You get plenty of ammo though and there is almost no reason to go off exploring.

I've only been playing on normal and I think the farthest I've made it to is the 4th system. At some point I jump into too many systems with solar flares or I can never find more crewmembers or I keep getting boarded. I'm still trynig to figure out what strategies are the best but having at least 4 crewmembers seems essential.

I've been sticking to easy so I can unlock more ships, I've unlocked 4 so far, and have beaten the game with the Stealth and Zoltan cruiser. I find by the time you get to sector 8, you'll need to have a teleporter, maxed shields, some weapon combination to get past a 4 level shield, and probably a drone control with a defensive turret. Also having some crew members with maxed stats for whatever station they're manning helps.

I had to switch to easy. Made it to the final fight with the rebel flagship twice now and lost both times in the 2nd "phase". I couldn't disable their drone control quickly enough and got swarmed.

One of the best things you can buy from a store is that upgrade for 120 scrap that arms your weapons right away whenever you enter a system. Having a first shot with a bomb and missile is huge.

Ok, I had been playing Final Fantasy 13 off and on for about a year and a half (thanks NBA 2k11-12), and decided it was finally time to wrap things up, going into Final Fantasy 13-2. I am SOOO glad I did it this way, because it makes the games feel like an overall "Whole" and not separate games. Plus it helps me to not constantly compare one game against the other.

While Final Fantasy13 deals with a threat to a world, and the need to stop it by a group of people, FF13-2 deals with the consequences of stopping and/or NOT stopping the events of FF13 from happening and the aftermath, via Time Travel.

They both have their pluses and minuses, but I will say, having jumped back on the horse with these games, I've actually been enjoying myself. Having a fast paced battle system has helped me enjoy these games a LOT more than I ever did the Late 90s-early 2000s Final Fantasies.

Finished up Saints Row 3. Fun game. Really fun game. Rockstar's RDR and GTA lose a lot of that with the focus centered around storytelling. Games like this, and Elder Scrolls too, I've found a good chunk of my time is spent interacting with the world around me and causing as much mayhem as I can. There's a limit to creativity of things I can do in this game, but I didn't reach that point until around 60 hours. I didn't find the story interesting at all after the first hour, and it was the last thing I finished once I was bored with the rest of the stuff.

Also, playing a bit of Planetside2 and Guild Wars 2. I like the direction both are taking MMO's. I can play with people, a lot of people, without having to be their friend, invite them to a party, or compete with them in the world. I never played Guild Wars, so 2 is entirely new to me. It's a lot more inviting than any other MMORPG, since I am rewarded for killing things with other people. The story doesn't stall at some point where I need to sit around asking for a group.

I'd forgotten how intense Bioshock can be and that playing it as the last thing you do before bed isn't really the best thing in the world to wind you down. :oldlol:

Currently I've almost completely moved to handhelds. Been playing Gravity Rush, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Hatsune Miku's Project Diva F on the Vita.

Then Pokemon Black version 2 and Fire Emblem: Awakening on 3DS.

Man, **** these handhelds.

I really want to play Fire Emblem and Persona 4 Golden, but I can't afford to spend 150-250 on a single game.

I wish I could give a review of the game itself but after waiting so long to finally play it, Origin/EA won't let us! You have to be online to play?!?! I remember when you paid for a game, installed it, then played it. Period. Now, they require you to sign up for Origin (sure just try to choose 'invisible', I dare you) and even if you opt for the physical disc, you can't successfully install because servers are busy!! I can't understand why a company who clearly put alot into developing this game would then make the experience simply awful before you even have a (remote) chance of playing it!!

It's a real shame, I was real interested in the idea of a new Sim City. I did pick up Sim City 4 in a steam sale though I haven't really touched it. Maybe I'll look into some mods and give that a run instead.

It'll be fine, just like Diablo 3 turned out to be perfectly playable despite the persistent DRM.

The cities look too small to me though. Isn't the best part of Simcity creating huge, sprawling cities? Can't really do that with such a tiny ass grid.

That's what bugged me looking at videos. Seems confined to such a small area.

It is small, and the game is centered around the region thing. After completing my first city, I worked on a second city to complement it. There weren't enough people in my first city who needed jobs.

IMO, multiplayer was the focus of the project, and it changed the way the game is played. I've wasted half the day playing it, so I'm enjoying it right now. Still, it isn't really simcity in the same way AoE3 isn't AoE2.

I wouldn't recommend it at full price. Simcity doesn't support mods at launch(EA says it will eventually). It feels too limited.

I wish I could have gotten into FF13 a little more...I literally bought it and returned it twice not advancing more than an hour or to into it. I know the reward's down the line, but it starts out soooooo slow.

Exactly. That's why I mentioned I was playing it "off and on" for 2 years lol. Games that take time to build aren't really "flawed" per se. But when you're used to "instant reward" type games, they can seem slow as hell. FF13 is like that, and they do their best to compensate by making the battles as fast as possible.

My thinking was that they could have had the characters "get to their points" quicker, which although it would have made the game shorter, it would have also made the game more better recieved. Nobody's life in this game is really that damn complicated. I think the game's length more had to due with the creators wanting to hold onto the "Long for the sake of being long" tradition of old school RPGs, when those days are pretty much over IMO.

They really don't need to do that anymore IMO. The best approach is simply keeping the player as engaged and involved as possible.

It's been a while since I've looked at the XBLA, so I checked it out again recently and tried a bunch of trial versions of games:

A Kingdom for Keflings
A World of Keflings
Sealife Safari - I tried these 3 because they were very small downloads, but they were all cutesy type games that I would tire of quickly.

Risk Factions
Defenders of Ardania
Defense Grid - These 3 aren't bad games of their type, but I see no reason to pay for any of them when I can play better games of their type for free.

Age of Booty - Decent enough, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to the game.

Perfect Dark - It's been a while since I've played it, but I don't remember it being that lackluster.

Portal - I was disappointed. I flew through all 11 or 12 of the levels in the trial version. I was wondering where the difficulty was. I've heard this series has gotten a lot praise, but I wasn't really impressed with the trial version.

Red Alert 3 - I just didn't care for this version.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - What the hell, all you can do is play a local game against another person and you can only pick from 6 characters. Way too limiting to get me interested.

Minecraft - I guess I can see why people get addicted to it, but I don't think I'll be one of them.

Torchlight - It's like Diablo, so I liked it. I may have to consider getting 1 or both.

Skyrim made a real good first impression for me. The world seemed huge and just walking to a quest you could stumble across some cool stuff. Eventually you get to a point where quests just don't feel as exciting, and you just quick travel anywhere instead of exploring. I still got a lot of hours into it before I started getting bored with it though.

System Shock 2 just became available on GOG recently, so I've been playing through that. It's interesting to compare this game to where bioshock is now. They've definitely simplified a lot of the mechanics, for better and worse I think. Good game though, really great atmosphere. On another note I'm really starting to like GOG, it's cool that they're trying to make a lot of these older games available.

Just picked this game up on sale about 2 weeks ago. And yes, this is one of those "decision making" games that I really enjoy, along the lines of the Mass Effect series, and Alpha Protocol. The atmosphere is truly awesome, but like Protocol, you really have to focus on the plot, because it's so dependent on the moves that you make, and how you interact with people.

Yes, I know the combat's not perfect, and it doesn't do the "over the top" thing that Japanese RPGs like Final Fantasy do, but it does offer intrigue and "maturity" to the Role playing game world to help balance out the genre. Plus, the Main Character looks like a grown ass man (with beard) and not a "conflicted" 20 yr old "metro" who's full of "angst" during the whole game.

Just remember to approach it like an RPG and not a "shooter" like Gears of War. That's something that I think peeps were expecting, kinda like the James Bond games, which sadly affected its popularity.

Plus, you can also make the main character look like a "Grown Ass Man" just like in Deus EX, with a beard if you want to.

Yeah, I think the best part of the game was the writing by the developers. The dialogue was good, the plot was well-written and reactive to your decisions, and the story posed extremely interesting philosophical questions. I wasn't as emotionally engaged in the game as I was with other RPG-style games but I was probably more intellectually engaged because of the underlying story.
