View Full Version : Teacher Leaves Wife for High School Student

Last year, Jordan Powers was just another student from Mr. Hooker's class. Now she's his live-in girlfriend.
James Hooker -- the 41-year-old married father who left his wife and kids for his 18-year-old-student -- might be the worst teacher ever. Last week, he resigned from his job at Enochs High School in Modesto, California over the scandal that's shaken up a community and pit one mom on a crusade to save her daughter from a man she calls a "master manipulator."
Video: Teacher caught on tape bullying a student
Jordan met her teacher as a freshman, but both maintain nothing physical happened until she turned 18 this past September. Hooker claims he saw Powers as "just a student" and had no romantic feelings toward her at first, but when her most recent birthday came around, things changed.
They changed so much, in fact, that Hooker, left his wife and three kids (one of them a 17-year-old Enochs high school student as well) so that he could move in with Jordan.
If this all sounds suspicious to you, imagine how Tammie Powers, Jordan's mom, feels. She's launched an official police investigation to find out if Hooker's relationship with her daughter began before Jordan was of legal age. Tammie is convinced it did, citing a photo of her daughter on Hooker's lap and text messages, emails and phone records exchanged between the couple that predate her daughter's 18th birthday.
"That's pursuit, in my opinion, with some type of intent," she told ABC News 10 in California.
Hooker denies Tammie's claims and is confident the investigation will turn up nothing. He blames the "stigma of the teacher-student relationship" for the public backlash. But Hooker's former boss, Modesto City Schools Supt. Pam Able, doesn't agree.
Even if their relationship doesn't break any laws, Able says she "considers student-teacher dating relationships to be not only unprofessional, but immoral." She also added in an email to the Modesto Bee, that Hooker's relationship has become a "source of great concern for staff, students and parents."

It must be particularly hard for Hooker's 17 year old daughter, now that her father has left to be with a fellow classmate and become a notorious figure throughout the school.
Still, Hooker claims he has no regrets. In an interview with Good Morning America, he shut down Tammie's accusations as a "pack of lies" and said of his new love, "we really do want to have a future together."
Watch: ABC News' exclusive interview with Hooker and Powers
Jordan, a quiet, fragile-seeming young woman, who looks closer to 15 than 18 years in age, gazed up at her former teacher, a man that looks every bit his 41 years, and said, "He's more than just a lover."
Jordan has now stopped going to classes and is finishing out her senior year by doing an independent study. She has limited contact with her mom, now that she's living with her teacher, mom's worst nightmare.
Desperate for her child, Tammie has turned her own Facebook page into a "most wanted" profile for Hooker. She's plastered his photo all over her wall warning neighbors about the man she calls an "arrogant pig". She's also made her wallpaper a photo of a prison cell, sending a message to Hooker should he dare visit her site.
Since the story has been picked up by national press, she's been flooded with messages of support from strangers. Tonight, she'll be taking her crusade against Hooker to Nancy Grace. "Nancy's always been a victims advocate and fights for justice," Tammie wrote on Facebook. "That's the goal here, justice."

He has no moral value what's so ever. It's not the fact she's 18, it's the fact he's getting a divorce and the fact he has 3 kids he's totally living behind for as he said "this leap of faith of love". His own daughter is 17 years old. So if they ever got married her step-mother wouldn't even be 1 year older than herself. They can say all the lovey dovey shit they want to, but fact of the matter is 90%+ of the time someone that young has no idea what they're feeling or the natures of real love and how hard times will get and when it comes to it, they'll bail because they're not mature enough to handle it yet. This is clearly shown with him especially living behind his children and soon-to-be ex-wife.
He's totally an embarrassment to himself and his family. Not a man at all.

I hear what you're saying:
But to me it just isn't as big a deal. My biggest problem is that it was his student and I find that so unprofessional I wanna punch the guy. And it's very very weird to me.
But put that aside for a sec... what's the difference between this situation and any other where a guy ditches his wife and kids for someone else? There is never any guarantee that the people will be mature enough: sure the fact that she's so young makes the chances slimer, but it's the person, not the age.
Now... to ME anyone who diteches their wife in this manner for another woman is not a man. But I see this example as nothing special in that regard.

The only questionable part of this is that he was her teacher meaning that he officially had some kind of authority over her at some point. The rest of it is fine.
People can get bored and what if he just had it with his wife? If that's the way he feels then so be it. Why should he continue to waste a short life in a situation that wasn't making him happy? Things can change and clearly something in this guy did. Besides, I assume he's not going to stop loving and supporting his children. He just clearly cared about someone more than he did his wife. You never know who you'll meet in your life.

While I personally don't like children and plan on never having any, I do get that it's a questionable move in terms of how it will affect them. This is just one story and we won't know if he completely abandons them or attempts to still have a relationship with them and support them financially. There is clearly a huge "weirdness factor" to overcome.
As for the wife? Too bad too sad but hey, the odds are that sometime in your life you will meet someone better than who you currently are with and I say life is too short to not take that chance. That might be something to think about when you are considering getting married as well though.

This is where I gained my understanding of love. The thing is in life, there's always going to be someone who will make you laugh more, someone more happy, someone more attractive, etc. They key to find someone you're totally satisfied with to the point you want nothing more or less of them. You just simply want them for who they are. And if you find someone like that in life and they feel the same way, you'll probably be together until death comes. That's how I feel anyway.

That's not what they said. Whether it's true or not, they said they became romantically interested in each other when they would have long 4 hour car rides from school functions. It would just be him and her alone in his car when she was a senior.

100% agree with you. This guy is a scumbag, I never like the older man with a younger girl thing since the girl clearly has no idea what she's doing but it's even worse with this guy since he has kids. Does he think the kids are going to come see him and his 18 year old girlfriend? I hope his wife leaves him, his kids have nothing to do with him anymore and in a year or 2 when this girl realises how stupid she has been then she will leave him also. Hopefully in 2 years he will have no wife, girlfriend, kids or job.

Very hard to believe none of this started before she turned 18.
Seems like both are just fulfilling a fetish of theirs. He wants the experience of a much younger woman, and she wants an older man. Once that curiosity is satisfied, they will find it hard, if not impossible, to return to their normal lives. Then what?

I don't know where she goes now, but people at my school are not talking shit about her. That's good to hear, I wouldn't expect that kind of maturity at a high school, so props to the students.

What's the rush to judgement? The man (using this term very lightly for this guy) left his wife, and 3 kids for an 18 year old student. Don't see what other information is necessary. Like others have already said, when you have kids, they come first. I can't even imagine hearing the shit people are going to say to his daughter at school.
He's 41. He's basically halfway through his life and some of those later years probably won't be too kind. If this is what makes the guy happy then why shouldn't he do it? I doubt it'll actually last long but it's basically a nice "restart" to his life.
I don't know about the age of his other kids but the one should be old enough to move past this kind of a thing.

You have no idea what's going inside his household or his head, so don't act like you do. Respect the couple's mutual decision and carry on.
Put yourself in his shoes for a minute. If the love is genuine, how would you feel about outsiders throwing dirt on you, basing their logic (using this term lightly for these guys' thought processes) on probable "manipulation" and "fulfilling fetishes". It would disgust you, no?

Maybe he did. Maybe he didn't. That's another issue entirely, although I really don't have a problem with a 17 year-old having feelings for a 40-year old, as long as they didn't act on them.

I don't know about the age of his other kids but the one should be old enough to move past this kind of a thing. He has a wife and 3 kids, it's a little to late to "restart" his life. Again I'm not against divorce if things aren't working out and you aren't happy, but you have to think of the kids first, how will this affect them. Regular divorces, the kids will miss have both parents together and would have to see them separately, not fun but you can get over that.
This situation, people won't just say "oh your parents are divorced right?" it'll be "oh your dad left your family to run off with some girl you went to high school with?". See how the second scenario would be much harder to coop with or explain? Clearly this guy didn't think about these things. Which brings me back to the point that he didn't put his family (mainly his kids) first.
And I don't think age of the children, really matter, I could be a full grown adult, if I found out my dad had left my mom for some girl I went to high school with, I'd be pretty upset, not something you just get over easily and would definitely cause me to erase away parts of my life involving him.

YOLO :confusedshrug: Again, divorce or splitting from your wife is one thing, obviously there are valid reasons to do that, but you're just going to throw you kids under the bus? I don't care if he supports them financially, thing about the mental and emotional aspect. How would you like it if your dad, left your family to live with a some girl you went to high school with, while you're in high school. I don't know about you, but a cheque every month wouldn't exactly make me feel better in that situation.
Sure there's a chance it's true love, but how often has an 18 year old found true love with a 41 year old?
Forget that aspect all together, say it is true love, what about his kids? You should also try to put yourself in the kids' shoes, how would you react if your father did that?

The dude is very emotionally immature to say the least.
People who have a strong sense of self don't ditch their wife and embarrass their entire family like that.
You know what emotionally strong people do? They try their best to see if they can reconcile with their wife. If not, they get a divorce and certainly do whatever is necessary to not embarrass their former wife and kids. Then they take a break an re-access what's going on in their life and what they want to do from this point on.
If you can say he did all that (obv he didn't lol), then you can say the dude is emotionally mature and has a strong sense of self...since you can't, this dude is just sad. He could really benefit from joining a good group or attend some individual counselling. Hopefully he can build some form of self control, boundaries, deal with child hood problems that may have led to this, learn to communicate better (his wife prob would have loved that one), etc.
I guarantee if he really did that and took his teachings to heart, he would shudder at the thought of doing something so silly. And that's the whole point. There isn't an excuse to do this no matter how you look at it....just an immature person.

This is a weak teacher-student story. I saw a show that featured a story of a teacher using sex to manipulate one of her students into murdering her husband while she was away. The wife tried to play it off like she didn't have a part in it when she was the one who set everything up and did all the manipulating (but there was too much evidence connecting her dumbass to the murder plot).
As for the kids pertaining to the story in the OP, they'll probably be better off in the long run with him jetting off with his student.

an 18 year old? How exactly at 40 do you get to know this perfect 1 in a million 18 yr old?
Guys like this date 18 yr olds because they can use their positions of power to get over on them, not because the girls are so special. Anyone who has taught, you can easily get the girls. They are easily manipulated, and you are in a position of power that makes you look impressive.

I'm surprised that there aren't as many 18 year oldfemale 28-40 year old male relationships. Those tend to work out well. They are prevalent in the oldschool cultures I'm from, and it's nice because the man loves the girls innocence, beauty, freshness, and while the girl respects the man's wisdom, strength, experiences, power, social connections. It works much better than having two people of the same age going at it since girls mature quicker and end up being old, scaly and miserable to be around after 35 or so unless the guy is a nautral leader.

Pretty weird, but you guys have no idea what his family life is like. Could be a living hell with his wife and daughters. His daughter is old enough to deal with it and move on. She's done with school and no one in college will have any clue as to her situation.
Although I agree that he will have some financial problems. His wife will rake him over the coals, and he's never gonna teach again.

Not in North America they dont. They work in old fashioned cultures where girls are groomed for marriage and a life as a homemaker while the men marry later after they accumulate assets.
Quite a different situation and culture from the US and other western nations.

Oh, I understand that, but even then I know a few couples around my community (Christian) who are in successful, stable marriages because of that. Both spouses have jobs. The guy's just the breadwinner and leader, that's all.

Do you guys know about microexpressions? It's based on the work of Paul Ekman who identified them. It's what the TV show Lie to Me is based on. There a involuntary movements that appear on our face before we can react and compose the face we want to present. Micro-expressions last typically less than a twenty fifth of a second.
If you came home from playing hooky and your Mom asked you where you want, a guilty look would flash across your face for an instance before you responded.
Look at the look of contempt she is giving him in the last photo. That is not going end well.
Here's Ekman using video testimony from the O. J. trial to demostrate micro expressions. (http://www.gladwell.com/2002/2002_08_05_a_face.htm)
Ekman slipped a tape taken from the O.J. Simpson trial into the VCR. It was of Kato Kaelin, Simpson's shaggy-haired house guest, being examined by Marcia Clark, one of the prosecutors in the case. Kaelin sits in the witness box, with his trademark vacant look. Clark asks a hostile question. Kaelin leans forward and answers softly. "Did you see that?" Ekman asked me. I saw nothing, just Kato being Kato-- harmless and passive. Ekman stopped the tape, rewound it, and played it back in slow motion. On the screen, Kaelin moved forward to answer the question, and in that fraction of a second his face was utterly transformed. His nose wrinkled, as he flexed his levator labii superioris, alaeque nasi. His teeth were bared, his brows lowered. "It was almost totally A.U. nine," Ekman said. "It's disgust, with anger there as well, and the clue to that is that when your eyebrows go down, typically your eyes are not as open as they are here. The raised upper eyelid is a component of anger, not disgust. It's very quick." Ekman stopped the tape and played it again, peering at the screen. "You know, he looks like a snarling dog."
Another researcher, John Gottman, used microexpressions in studying why marriages fail.
Gottman's theory states that there are four major emotional reactions that are destructive and thus are the 4 predictors to a divorce: criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling, and contempt. Among these four, Gottman considers contempt the most important of them all.
Gottman did an experiment where his researchers had a newlywed couple discuss an issue. They studied how well they interacted together. By looking for microexpressions of the above reactions, they claimed a 90% success rate in predicting whether or not the couple will be divorced in 6 years.

I think there's a pretty huge distinction to be made between banging a 17, 18 year old and banging a little kid.
Thing is, if they don't tell you, you will never be able to tell the difference between a 17 and 18 year old. Nowadays girls at 13-14 can easily look like 18+.
