I rejected it because it was more geotechnical than structural.

Not very difficult. I interned for the city in 2009 and when I graduated 2 years ago, my intern boss put an extremely good word for me before my interview. I been with the city a year and a half and I've had a great run so far. I've done all kinds of shit, from plan review to managing Capital Improvement Projects.

I'm actually planning to go back to school and work full time while going to school part time. I want to get my MCE with focus in Water Resources.

Sounds legit. I interned last summer for a city too and from what I saw everything come down to a bunch of paper work. No one does any design, and if there is any design its usually the "design monkeys" doing all the CAD stuff. I'm about to start another internship soon with a bigger city so maybe things are different there. Sadly, as great as Southern California is overall, it really sucks big ones for young professionals right now unless you have some connections.

Good luck with the Masters. I started off as Water resources too but my school started to get all kinds of new professors and I wasn't really feeling their style so i decided to switch over to construction management. I'm hoping it will make me more marketable to employers, since I already have a shitload of water classes under my belt.

Well down here, we don't do any actual design either. We pretty much hire consultants to do all that shit. We do manage all the design as far as making decisions as to how we want things done. We are very much involved with our construction and maintenance branches, therefore we try to gear the design of the project to make it as easy and cheap as possible to get it built and also not create any maintenance nightmares for our maintenance crews.

I never took any actual water resources in college besides one hydraulic course I took my junior year so I've pretty much learned everything I know right now on the fly.

If you do happen to come down to Texas, I really recommend that you try to get involved with the Texas Department of Transportation (Tx-DOT). Try your best to find a job there, those guys down there do all kinds of shit. They do design, CAD work, construction management, project management, etc. I'm actually looking into positions there. I've gotten to know a few people that have worked for TxDOT and they always rave how much training and experience they got while working there. I always hear people talking about how the pay is not good at TxDOT but that's bullshit. Their pay is pretty competitive. The people that do get screwed there are the people that have been working for a long time at TxDOT, since raises do suck there. Usually people that get hired out make much more than people already within the organization. So try not to plan to stay long term either, otherwise you would eventually complain about pay.

Cool. I was actually planning to take a roadtrip down to Texas during the summer with some buddies that are pretty much in the same boat as me but they ended up flaking out. I will definitely be checking out the TxDOT tho. Its funny because California's equivalent of the TxDOT is actually pretty known for the low pay too but its a bunch of old timers who dont do shit so they cant complain too much. I guess the difference is that currently Texas' transpo. department will actually hire new engineers, where as, here the economy is so bad that they wont hire, and if they do hire you bet its gonna be someone with a bunch of experience. Thanks for all the Info man. I will definitely be PMing you sometime in the future :oldlol:

Just because the average is pathetic doesn't make 60 any more impressive. I'll say it again, it's good to be making decent cash at that age. With nobody depending on you and no debt, 60 is good. I know from experience, it's nice, you can put decent chunks in savings while still purchasing a lot of things that you want. But to dig up a thread and brashly declare you're making 60 grand as if you're P Diddy or something is just ridiculous. A little perspective and humility please.

To be honest, when I took the FE exam, the civil questions were the ones I knew the least. I had totally forgotten how to do resultant forces and all that garbage and didn't have much time to relearn it on the fly. Bubbled in all Cs on those.

Probably should've spent more time prepping for that. Still passed it though.

You got through it, that's all that matters. I did two senior design courses my last year so I had absolutely no time to dedicate for the FE. I ended up looking over the formula guide you get a few days before the exam and that got me through (plus bubbling B on everything I didn't know or was too lazy to try).

It was an endurance test more than anything for me. It's pretty much a test over everything math and science you've ever learned. My mind was numb after that exam. Absolute exhaustion. Got drunk that night for sure.

No, you're just likely another unemployed douchebag who is in awe because he will be lucky to making 60k a year when he's 40. Nevermind 22. Sorry to piss on your little party.

I had a feeling the bleeding-heart-could-never-conceivably-achieve-60k-in-my-life crowd would be out in full force, and boy, was I right. Can't even make a comment like "stop bragging about 60k, it's not that impressive" without having a bunch of posters whose career earnings must amount to about half that (lest they be offended) jumping on me. What a ****ing joke you guys are.

What do you do, Johnny?
I love how this has got turned around. It doesn't matter; 60k isn't a lot or little regardless of what I do. I exceed that by a lot even in a really shitty year (like this has been), but unlike OP I don't think I'm impressive or special for doing so. Thusly I don't brag about it. You guys try to back me into a corner and then act like I'm being an asshole by admitting what I make (AND THEN CLAIM I'M TRYING TO BRAG ABOUT IT! CLASSIC!)

OP (after 6 month hiatus of original bragging post): "I'm a boss, have a sick whip, makin 60k!!"

Me: "Good for you, 60k is good at age 22, but it's certainly not worth rubbing in people's faces."

Rest of forum: "You're a douchebag, oh you're so cool what a tough guy?"

Me: "WTF?"

You need some perspective in your life. No matter what you are accustomed to, making 60k right out of the gate is nice. Why can't you just be happy for the guy?

Instead, you throw around insults and show everyone just how insecure you are.

My f*cking god, I AGREE WITH YOU, which is why I said multiple times that it was good money for being 22. Are you being deliberately stupid just to f*cking piss me off? Because it's working.

Why can't you just be happy for the guy?
I'm not happy for anyone who drags up six-month old threads on a whim to brag about himself. Have a little f*cking humility. Which is exactly what I said. I never dumped on the guy making 60k a year, there is nothing wrong with that, it's very respectable at his age. I SAID ALL THAT. My issue was that it's not something to flaunt in people's faces.

Instead, you throw around insults and show everyone just how insecure you are.
Insults only came when people like you started being *****.

P.S.-He wasn't bragging and you can't seem to let it go.

Pretty hard to "let it go" when people continue to make posts aimed at me, wouldn't you say? Like, really? You can't see why I can't let it go when every post except my original one has been in response to other people? Uh, ok.

Good for you, OP. OP is a nice guy and I've never seen him be aggressive towards anybody. I'm an EE btw, OP.

60k is a nice start out of college. Maybe he was bragging a little bit? Maybe he wasn't? Who cares. He worked hard in school to get where he is at and felt he had to tell somebody. That doesn't make him a douchebag or worthy of getting torn to shreds for it. He didn't belittle everybody else. He simply proclaimed his excitement about what he's doing, which is a good thing (and sadly not enough people in this world have that drive).

This certainly isn't worth the pages upon pages of argument over it, lol.

Anyways, good job, OP. I graduate this Spring (2013) and have a lot of different options I can take. I haven't really decided what I want to do, so I am excited for what the future holds. Right now, my options are:

1) Working
2) Staying an extra year (summer 2013, fall 2013, and spring 2014) to pick up a mechanical degree (My dad basically has both too and he says he sees the advantage in it everyday in his work and it interests me [my tech electives were mechanical courses]).
3) Trying to get into graduate school.
4) Trying to get into law school (I have started studying for the LSAT already).

I think I'll end up doing a combination of those things. Especially since I probably won't take the LSAT until June 2013, I'll have plenty of time before trying to get into law school, so I'll try options 1-3 first out of school.

Good luck!

The fact that ISH cannot decipher the difference between "good for you, 60k is nice, but nothing to brag about" and "getting torn to shreds" is absolutely mind-blowing. Despite saying so multiple times it seems I cannot possibly over-emphasize that. So typical of this site though. There is no sense of moderation or middle ground. If I'm not saying "wow you're a boss bro!" I'm saying "you're f*cking pathetic, I shit 60k bricks of cash before breakfast and then burn them" according to the posters on this site. Juges you're good shit but come on bud, reading isn't difficult. Try a little harder instead of just accepting and going with the flow of textbook ISH reactionary BS. It's all laid out there in black and white for anyone who isn't too lazy or biased to read it.

Holy shit JDG why are you upset to keep replying to everyone that differs with you.
First off, I don't know if you understand the concept of a message board. When someone quotes what you said and posts a nonsensical reply, then you respond. Obviously you don't have to, but that's what the general purpose of the board is. Why reply to me if you don't want to start a conversation? If you don't want to read my replies, then like everyone else perhaps you should stop making posts that directly refer to me.:confusedshrug:

Secondly, it's not a matter of a difference in opinion. It's a matter of posters inventing imaginary points that I didn't make and fabricating things I've said. So yes, if people are going to continue to try to argue with me with their bullshit fallacies, then I'm going to continue to point out their stupidity.

I agree, initially you were nice (actually defended him in beg of thread). What I'm referring to was more how it ended up with all the back and forth arguments throughout the thread. I just felt it detracted from the thread where there was positive discussion between people discussing their careers and such. It escalated to real ugly, real fast. I just didn't feel that it was worth that much anger/argument. Maybe your jimmies were rustled at the time and it got the better of you; IDK. All I'm saying is that this doesn't warrant people getting all bent out of shape over it, lol.

I feel sorry for you man, you got so much hate that you have to get heated just to bring someone down. Even if it seems like I was bragging a little, what is the big deal? Are you trying to show that you are successful? Because good for you man. I'm happy with what I'm doing with my life and I like what I get in return; if you are doing better then congrats to you.

This is absurd. I didn't get angry or even put anyone down until my words were deliberately twisted. That is frustrating, absolutely it is, I admit that. I find it comical that only a handful of people seem to understand that without the moronic replies where they invent things I've said or implied, I never would have even made another post.:confusedshrug: So to act as if I just up and decided to try and put you down is ridiculous on your part.

Even if it seems like I was bragging a little, what is the big deal? Are you trying to show that you are successful?
You miss the point entirely. If I was trying to show what a boss I am, don't you feel that I would have actually done so at some point in this thread? I've never revealed my occupation or what I make, and the only post I have concerning that was after someone questioned me directly. So I'd have to say it's pretty unfair of you to assume that I was in this to try to prop myself up.

Also, 60k starting salary for my job is relatively high. No one, at least where I live makes that much to start. So I'm just grateful.
I'm aware of that, and I've said a few times that you're doing well for yourself. So again, to act (like a majority of other posters in this thread have) as if I'm dumping on what you've achieved is pretty frustrating. I mean, I say one thing, and the complete other is what is attributed to me. If you can't understand why that would frustrate someone I don't know what to say to you. Me getting pissed off has nothing to do with what you're making, and everything to do losing patience with people replying to me with nonsense that had nothing to do with what I said.
