View Full Version : Need a set of headphones, help ISH!
I need a pair of cheap, reasonable priced headphones. I'm sure some people here are educated highly on Audio, as they are in other shit. I've done a lot of researching spending a lot of my time on this. I had wanted a pair of Beats by Dre's up until I see that many "professionals" have been reporting that true headsets for audio aren't from Beats (Monster). I've been convinced enough to not purchase anything from them, thankfully. I had used Studios from my friend who is an artist, and their pretty good. However, that's coming from someone with standard JVC earphones. Never had headphones.
My price tag - $0-50 (Used/New)
Genres - Rap, Hip-Hop, R&B, Reggae
Most interested in a good/great bass headphones with preferable noise isolation more than noise cancellation.
Some headphones that I've searched up and had good reviews were:
Sennheiser 201

Sennheiser 202

MDR-XB300

I have my eyes on the Sony MDR XB300 and the Sennheisers 202 which both have good reviews and seem to have what I want. Please help decide.

Sennheisers are quality man honestly.
Beats are for looks and/or you like your bass that completely drowns out the rest of the song.

Thanks for reinforcing the quality. I don't want overpowered bass, would the 202's do good? I don't like the look of it though.

I'd wait for the V-Moda M100.
The VModa M80 might be the best overall value on the market. They offer class A quality top build, great comfort and audiophile sound for a great price. Superior to the Beats series, and most other audiophile cans in the same price range, but also have great aesthetics.

I have cats take a double look when they see me with them. Def a great buy.

The V-Moda's look great but not my price tag, something for a novice and entry level headsets. The Sony MDR-XB300 are the smaller versions of the XB500 & it looks good.. just want to know if I should get these if anyone want to confirm with me?
Edit: I think I might push to purchase these on Amazon .. is Amazon genuine for selling legit headphones? I wouldn't want to end up with a fake.

Yes, you'll be fine purchasing through Amazon.
If you want to get the HD201's, Newegg (also a very reputable dealer) has them on sale for $13 (with free shipping)

These were over $100 when they first came out. Audio Technica is a great brand.

Also these Sony's are listed as extra bass and are well reviewed. Probably an upgrade over the sony's you're looking at

Here's one headphone to consider: the JVC HA-RX700. I've gone back to these $35 JVCs twice, from $90 Audio Technica ATH-AD700s and $170 250ohm Beyerdynamic DT990 PROs.
JVC HA-RX700s are semi-open, but isolate enough to game very well with. None of its frequencies hurt your ears like the Beyerdyamic DT 990s can, although the JVC HA-RX700 are kind of uncomfortable physically compared to the other two. They're also huge so you'll feel stupid in public. The JVCs have better balance across the frequencies than my two other headphones. Compared to the JVCs, the AD700s were all treble and no bass. The DT 990s had too much bass + treble.
Amazon headphones sold by Amazon are definitely legit. They also have a great return policy for an online place.
Unfortunately for you, JVCs are out of stock everywhere right now... hopefully they'll be back soon.
Thanks for your responses. I like those audio tech's. You have them? Idk guys the sony extra bass seems good but I see it over powers the highs..

The M30's look good. Great reviews, good price. Only problem is the giant ass earmuffs. Is there a smaller size in this? Or something closer? The XB500 is GIANT as well which is why I looked into the XB300.

I got the SkullCandy Skullcrushers, and the only real upside to those is the subwoofer, which really just vibrates the shit out of your brain. When its off, the sound quality is pretty average.
I've got the Koss U20 studio headphones, $30, and they are high quality. Probably wouldn't wear them in public because they aren't too stylish, but for in-home use they are amazing.

I bought some JVC HA-RX700's about 6-12 months ago and I've been very happy with them. They were on Amazon for about $35. The pros are the wide-array of sounds. They're slightly open, but I feel that lets you hear more details. Especially with instrumental/classical. They offer a decent bass that I'm happy with. The main drawbacks of them is they are extremely large cans, definitely not something to go outside with and the cord is 11' long. I had to braid my cord to cut down the length. I didn't want to cut it because I'm not experienced with it. The build qaulity is all plastic, but excellect and durable. The cord is connected to the left year, but at timesi f you turn you head you can hear the cord's plastic rub up against the headphone and cause a squeaking noise.
If you want a little more base the RX900's are the next option. Same exactly build quality, but a little more bass.
http://av.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028320&pathId=112&page=1
A lot of their full size cans are $25-$50, their premium ones run up to $200 though.

This.
My friend met up with me today, he recently purchased the Beats by Dre Solo HD's and he feel he isn't satisfied much with the sound quality. He said "I don't know if I'm def, or maybe it's the ipod" he purchased them for $220 but can return them within 30 days. He gave me a try and their really bad. Like, this is coming from someone who only uses JVC ear phones. I tried the Studio's a few times and those were AMAZING. To hear the HD's sound like this, it was terrible. The sound quality wasn't all that, the bass was definitely not all that either.
He purchased it without trying them out at Best Buy. At least best buy has a good return policy huh.

Well if you are looking for headphones that block out sound they are going to be around that size. They can hot in the summer if you're out and about.
otherwise you should look into in ear headphones which have gotten insanely good lately.

These are great cans for the price.
Denon ah1100s can be found from time to time for about the same price(avoid the 1000s, too much burn in necessary, and the spiral cones will trap air, but that was fixed in the 1100s). And Audio Technica ATH500s are outstanding, worth the price, just to have a counter-balanced suspension. But unless you get double band suspension, skip AT. Also, Sony MDR V900HDs can be found for under $100 from time to time.
If you were an audiophile, you would already know, and wouldn't be asking in ISH for opinions. So I'm sure you'll be pretty happy with anything suggested.

My Superlux HD 669>>>> those
I own the Sonys and have used the different versions, cause like you mentioned, they're the standard due to their comfort, price and neutral sound. But the Superlux are clearer, and imo better monitor cans.

I've been seeing a lot folks on sports using the Sennheisher HD 280's with the built in mike, the model is called the HMD280
I think NBA TV uses these for the postgame interviews.

The Sennheishers 280's sound better and isolate sound better than the Sony 7506, there's no comparison. However, the Sonys are metal would tend to last longer. They are also 100 bucks. The Sonys are the industry standard because they have been around so long and they last. They are not necessary the best studio headphones for the price. The Sennheisher 280's are less than a decade old.
I'm a bit hesitant purchasing earbuds because all the ones I have now the left or the right outplays the opposite one. Would that change purchasing a good quality one? how often do they blow?

7506's are fantastic, the 280's are fantastic as well. Try them both out for yourself, there's no 'right' answer to this question and it depends on the music you listen to as well.

Fair enough. Isolation wise the 280's are better. Isolation is just never an issue I face when I'm producing with my headphones.
